The Meta Quest 3S is a standalone virtual reality headset developed by Meta. It was announced at Meta Connect 2024 on September 25, 2024, and released on October 15, 2024.[3] The Quest 3S is Meta's entry-level VR and mixed reality headset, positioned as a cheaper alternative to the Meta Quest 3: it uses the same Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, 8 GB of memory, color passthrough cameras and controllers, but pairs them with the display and Fresnel lenses of the Meta Quest 2.[4][3] It replaced the Quest 2 in Meta's lineup.[5] As of October 2026 it remains on sale alongside the Quest 3.[6]

At its October 2024 U.S. launch, Quest 3S cost $299.99 for 128 GB and $399.99 for 256 GB.[7] Meta raised these U.S. prices by $50 each, to $349.99 and $449.99, effective April 19, 2026, citing the rising cost of memory chips; the increase also applied to refurbished units.[8][9] On October 17, 2026, Meta's U.S. store listed the 128 GB model at $349.99.[10]

Reviewed 17 October 2026. Checked the October 2026 Meta store prices, the April 2026 price increase, Meta's compare-page specifications, the Horizon OS v85 and 2.9 test-channel changes, the September 2026 Steam survey share, the SID 2025 paper abstract, the leak and discontinuation reports, and the Guardian, IGN, Road to VR, TechRadar, PC Gamer, The Verge, Wired, Tom's Guide, MIXED and UploadVR reviews and test articles against the cited text; the PCMag comparison could not be opened. About review dates.

History and development

Before the official announcement, the Quest 3S name surfaced in several leaks. In May 2024 the fitness game Alo Moves XR, made by the studio Magnopus, briefly listed "Quest 3S" as a supported device, and in September 2024 dataminer Luna shared an image said to come from a Meta support page describing the headset's Action Button; Road to VR noted that the image's authenticity had not been verified.[11]

Meta announced the Quest 3S on September 25, 2024, during Meta Connect 2024, with preorders opening the same day in all 23 countries where Meta sold headsets. It began shipping on October 15, 2024.[3] The headset took over the Quest 2's place as the company's low-cost entry point into VR and MR, below the Meta Quest 3.[5][12] At the same event Meta said it was winding down sales of the Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro, selling remaining stock "through the end of the year or until they're gone".[13]

Purchases made before April 30, 2025 included a free copy of Batman: Arkham Shadow; UploadVR reported that the offer also included three months of Meta Quest+.[5][3]

On June 24, 2025, Meta and Microsoft released the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition, a limited-quantity bundle priced at US$399.99. It pairs a 128 GB Quest 3S in Xbox Carbon Black, with matching Touch Plus controllers that have Velocity Green accents on their face buttons and thumbsticks, a limited-edition Xbox Wireless Controller that comes pre-paired with the headset, the Meta Quest Elite Strap, and three-month memberships to Meta Horizon+ and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It was sold through Meta's online store and Best Buy in the United States and through Argos and EE in the United Kingdom.[14][15]

Hardware

Design and ergonomics

The Quest 3S has a white plastic body and a body design similar to the Quest 2.[16][5] Its front panel has two triangular camera and sensor clusters instead of the Quest 3's vertical pill-shaped clusters.[16] It weighs 514 grams, essentially the same as the 515-gram Quest 3, but its Fresnel lenses make it thicker.[3][12] Meta says it is 20% slimmer than the Quest 2 when measured without the facial interface.[17] TechRadar found the extra size less comfortable than the Quest 3 because the weight sits further from the face.[18] The Guardian's specifications list the headset at 191.5 x 102 x 142.5 mm.[5]

It ships with a soft fabric Y-style headstrap like the one on Meta's other recent headsets.[19] Road to VR, MIXED and IGN all found it inadequate for a front-heavy headset and recommended a better strap, with IGN recommending Meta's US$69.99 Elite Strap and MIXED suggesting third-party straps as cheaper options.[4][20][19] The Guardian disagreed, finding the strap, pivoting arms and foam faceplate comfortable for long sessions.[5] The strap attachment points are compatible with most Quest 3 headstraps, including Meta's Elite Straps.[3][4][21]

A physical "Action Button" on the underside of the headset, next to the volume control, toggles between immersive VR and the passthrough view.[3][22] UploadVR described it as replacing the double-tap gesture used on earlier Quest headsets, though TechRadar found that the double tap still worked.[3][18] Starting with the Horizon OS version 85 Public Test Channel build in January 2026, Meta began rolling out the ability to remap the button, with a choice of five actions (passthrough, Meta AI, taking a photo, recording video or muting the microphone) and a separate long-press action.[23][24] Unlike the Quest 2 and Quest 3, the Quest 3S has no internal proximity sensor, so the display does not turn on or off automatically when the headset is put on or removed; users press the power button instead.[4]

Display and optics

The Quest 3S's display and optical system, the main point of difference from the Quest 3, is largely carried over from the Meta Quest 2.[16][18] It uses a single LCD panel with a resolution of 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye, the same as the Quest 2, at 773 pixels per inch and refresh rates of 72, 90 and 120 Hz.[6][12][21] Meta lists about 20 pixels per degree (PPD), compared with 25 PPD from the Quest 3's 2064 x 2208 per-eye panels.[2]

In MIXED's testing the lower panel resolution was hard to notice in games, because mobile chips render below native resolution anyway.[20] PCMag and TechRadar found the Quest 3's image noticeably sharper, and TechRadar reported a more visible screen door effect, most apparent when watching video or reading text on large virtual screens.[16][18]

The Quest 3S uses Fresnel lenses, also inherited from the Quest 2.[3][21] These have a smaller "sweet spot" (the central area of maximum clarity) than the pancake lenses used in the Quest 3.[4][20] Image sharpness drops towards the edges of the view, and the lenses add glare and ghosting reflections in high-contrast scenes.[4][20] The field of view is 96 degrees horizontal and 90 degrees vertical, compared with 110 by 96 degrees on the Quest 3.[2][16]

Interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment is limited to three fixed lens positions at 58 mm, 63 mm and 68 mm, as on the Quest 2; UploadVR gave the supported IPD bands as 56-60 mm, 61-65 mm and 66-70 mm.[3][6] Users move the lenses between the positions by hand.[20] The Quest 3 instead has a continuous adjustment wheel supporting IPDs from 53 to 75 mm, and TechRadar noted that users whose IPD falls between the Quest 3S presets may get a slightly blurrier image.[18] A glasses spacer is included, and the headset is compatible with Quest 2 prescription lens inserts; UploadVR named Zenni as Meta's official partner for prescription inserts.[3]

Display engineering

In a 2025 invited paper for the Society for Information Display's annual symposium, Meta engineers described how the Quest 3S improves image quality while keeping the Quest 2's display resolution. They reported a 30% improvement in rendering resolution, a 14% reduction in latency, display imaging algorithms for better contrast, and 350% higher passthrough resolution with improved color.[25] UploadVR listed the default render resolution as 1680 x 1760 per eye, the same as the Quest 3 and up from 1440 x 1584 on the Quest 2.[3]

Processor and performance

The Quest 3S uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 system-on-chip with 8 GB of RAM, the same configuration as the more expensive Quest 3.[3][16] Meta claims double the GPU processing power of the Quest 2's Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 and 33% more memory.[6] The Guardian described the chip as about twice as fast as the Quest 2's, with apps loading faster and a more responsive system.[5] The shared chip means the Quest 3S runs titles exclusive to the Quest 3 generation, such as Batman: Arkham Shadow.[21][12] IGN observed that the lower display resolution gave the Quest 3S a consistent performance advantage over the Quest 3 in the games it tested.[19]

Tracking and controllers

The Quest 3S uses inside-out tracking with six degrees of freedom from four infrared tracking cameras, alongside two RGB passthrough cameras, on the front and sides of the headset.[17][5] MIXED found tracking as stable as on the Quest 3.[20] The headset adds two Infrared (IR) flood illuminators beside the cameras. In UploadVR's tests in total darkness, where the Quest 3 and Quest 2 lost head and hand tracking, the Quest 3S kept tracking hands as well as in good lighting; in low light its hand tracking started faster and handled fast motion better.[26] Road to VR also found that hand tracking worked in a pitch-black room.[4] The Quest 3S lacks the Quest 3's infrared depth projector, which Quest 3 uses for room meshing during setup.[3][26] TechRadar found the Quest 3S's room scan almost as accurate at detecting walls and furniture.[18]

The headset comes with the same Meta Quest Touch Plus Controllers as the Quest 3.[3][4] They have a ring-free design and TruTouch haptics.[3] Capacitive sensing on the buttons and thumbsticks detects resting fingers.[4][5] Each controller takes a single AA battery and, according to the Guardian's specifications, weighs 103 g without it.[5][21] Reviewers praised their ergonomics and tracking accuracy.[5][20] Tracking can be lost if the controllers stay in the cameras' blind spots, for example behind the back, for extended periods.[4] Road to VR described hand tracking as "frustratingly inaccurate at times" within the Horizon OS interface, while MIXED called it the best hand tracking on the consumer market.[4][20]

Audio

Audio comes from integrated spatial audio speakers in the headstrap arms.[5] The Guardian found them good enough that no other audio device was needed, and Road to VR rated the audio quality equal to the Quest 3 and better than the Quest 2.[5][4] The Quest 3S has no 3.5 mm headphone jack, unlike the Quest 2 and Quest 3.[3][5] Private listening requires USB-C headphones, a 3.5 mm to USB-C adapter, or Bluetooth headphones.[5][21] PC Gamer noted that the USB-C port may already be occupied by a PC link cable.[21]

Passthrough and mixed reality

A key upgrade over the Quest 2 is full-color stereo passthrough from two RGB cameras, enabling mixed reality experiences in which virtual elements are overlaid on the user's surroundings.[3][27] Meta lists the passthrough cameras at 4 MP and 18 PPD;[6] UploadVR's comparison table gives 4 PPD for the Quest 2's black-and-white passthrough.[3] Reviewers rated it below the Quest 3: Road to VR called it "just good enough to want to use", MIXED found the image noisier and more prone to flicker, and Wired found it too fuzzy to read text on a phone or laptop screen.[4][20][22] The Guardian could "just about read my phone" through it.[5] The headset supports room scanning and both roomscale and stationary boundaries.[27][2]

Battery

The Quest 3S has a 4,324 mAh battery.[6][19] Meta rates its runtime at 2.5 hours of general use; at launch Meta's rating for the Quest 3 was 2.2 hours.[6][3] In reviews, the Guardian and Tom's Guide got about two hours, MIXED found the battery running out after just under two hours, and Wired managed about 1 hour 40 minutes.[5][27][20][22] The Guardian measured a full charge at about 110 minutes.[5] Meta's help pages list an 18 W power adapter for the Quest 3 and Quest 3S.[28] The Guardian reported Meta's claim of at least 500 full charge cycles.[5] Because the Quest 3S lacks the Quest 3's pogo pins, it does not work with the Quest 3 Charging Dock; Meta sells a separate Compact Charging Dock, which charges the controllers wirelessly and the headset over an extended USB-C cable.[3][4]

Software

Operating system

The Quest 3S runs Meta Horizon OS, Meta's Android-based operating system; Meta's developer comparison lists it on Android 14.[5][2] Horizon OS supports several 2D apps such as browsers or media players at once in floating windows, along with play boundaries (Guardian) and user accounts.[4][5] A Meta account is required, but a Facebook or Instagram account is not.[5] TechRadar called Horizon OS "clean, intuitive, feature-packed" and noted roughly monthly updates, while Road to VR found it "overtly clunky" with persistent usability problems and Wired reported occasional interface glitches.[18][4][22] Meta will provide security updates until at least October 2029, according to the Guardian.[5]

Meta moved to a "Horizon OS 2" naming scheme with version 2.1 in February 2026.[29] Horizon OS 2.7 (week of August 17, 2026) added a Gamepad Mode that lets Quest 3 and 3S users emulate Xbox gamepad inputs on their Touch Plus controllers; the extended refresh rates added in the same update are exclusive to Quest 3, and Meta states they are not available on Quest 3S.[29][30] In early October 2026 Meta began testing Horizon OS 2.9 on its Public Test Channel; the build adds a system QR code scanner on Quest 3 and 3S.[31]

Content library

The Quest 3S has access to the full Meta Horizon Store (called the Meta Quest Store until Meta renamed it in 2024)[32], which holds VR games, mixed reality applications, fitness programs, social experiences, entertainment apps and productivity tools.[27][19] Because it shares the Quest 3's processor, it can play the same games as the Quest 3, including Quest 3-generation exclusives such as Batman: Arkham Shadow.[12][21] The Guardian highlighted Meta-published titles such as Beat Saber and Asgard's Wrath 2, games from the Assassin's Creed, Medal of Honor and Resident Evil series, and cross-platform games such as Superhot VR, Red Matter 2 and Arizona Sunshine 2.[5] Wired named Gorilla Tag and Blade & Sorcery: Nomad among the platform's popular games.[22]

The headset also works as a PC VR headset with a compatible gaming PC.[5][21] Meta supports Meta Quest Link over a USB-C Link cable or wirelessly over Wi-Fi with Air Link.[2] PC Gamer also named the third-party Virtual Desktop app and Valve's Steam Link as wireless options.[21] This gives access to PC platforms such as SteamVR and PC-only titles like Half-Life: Alyx.[4][19]

In Valve's Steam Hardware & Software Survey for September 2026, the Quest 3S accounted for 11.07% of Steam users with a VR headset, third behind the Quest 3 (26.90%) and the Quest 2 (25.80%).[33] MIXED reported in January 2025 that Valve's survey recorded a Quest 3S as a Quest 3 when it was connected through Quest Link or Virtual Desktop, so the Quest 3S entry counted only Steam Link users.[34]

At Meta Connect 2026 on September 23, 2026, Meta announced further games for Quest 3 and 3S, among them PAYDAY: Aces High (open playtest from October 19, full release later in 2026) and Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades 2 (November 12, 2026). Several of the announced titles, such as Dragon Grove and Dice Throne Digital, are also planned for Meta VR Glasses, a separate headset Meta announced at the same event for spring 2027.[35][36]

Reception

The Meta Quest 3S received generally positive reviews, mainly for its value and performance at its US$299.99 launch price.[4][5][27] Road to VR called it "the best value you can find in a VR headset today", the Guardian "the best bang for your buck" in VR headsets, TechRadar "the best affordable VR headset out there right now", and The Verge "the best headset to buy right now".[4][5][18][12] Reviewers singled out the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, shared with the Quest 3, for running the latest Quest games smoothly.[5][27][21] The color passthrough was seen as a major upgrade over the Quest 2, even though it fell short of the Quest 3's.[16][5][27] The improved low-light hand tracking from the IR illuminators was also noted.[4][26]

Criticism centered on the compromises behind the lower price, particularly the reuse of the Quest 2's display and Fresnel lens system.[4][16][18] Reviewers pointed to the lower resolution, narrower field of view, smaller sweet spot and blurrier edges compared with the Quest 3's pancake lenses, which mattered most for reading text or watching media.[4][18][20] The three-step IPD adjustment was criticized for users whose IPD falls between the presets.[18][20] Other complaints included the default headstrap's comfort[20][4], the missing 3.5 mm headphone jack[3][21], short battery life[22][27] and Horizon OS usability.[4][20] MIXED said it could not recommend the headset to VR newcomers without reservation, citing the blurry lenses, IPD settings, narrow field of view and comfort, and suggested the Quest 3 as the better choice for longer-term use.[20]

Most reviewers recommended the Quest 3S to VR newcomers and budget-conscious buyers.[27][22][12] For buyers wanting better visual quality, a wider field of view or a bigger upgrade from a Quest 2, several outlets considered the Quest 3 worth the extra cost.[16][18][21][12] PC Gamer advised against the 256 GB Quest 3S at $400, suggesting buyers consider the $500 Quest 3 with 512 GB of storage and better optics instead (both launch-era prices as given by PC Gamer).[21]
