Half-Life: Alyx is a virtual reality first-person shooter developed and published by Valve for SteamVR. It is a VR-only game set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2, in which the player controls Alyx Vance as she and her father, Eli Vance, fight the alien Combine occupation of Earth.[1][2] Valve built the game on its Source 2 engine and released it for Windows on 23 March 2020.[2][3] It was the first new entry in the series in 13 years and Valve's first feature-length VR game.[4]
The game works with any SteamVR-compatible PC headset, and owners of the Valve Index headset or Valve Index Controllers received it at no charge.[5] It holds a Metascore of 93 on Metacritic and won Best VR/AR Game at The Game Awards 2020.[6][7] Valve added Steam Workshop support, community level-editing tools and a native Linux version in May 2020.[8] On 14 September 2026 it released a native ARM64 build that runs standalone on the Steam Frame headset, which ships with a copy of the game.[9][10]
Gameplay
Half-Life: Alyx is played from a first-person perspective in VR. Road to VR wrote that it felt designed first and foremost for standing play in room-scale spaces.[11] The player physically leans, reaches and aims; Valve's store description gives examples such as leaning around a broken wall to make a shot under a Barnacle, searching shelves for health syringes and shotgun shells, throwing a bottle through a window to distract an enemy, and pulling a headcrab off Alyx's face.[1] The game combines combat, puzzle solving and exploration, and its Steam page lists adjustable difficulty, captions and 42 Steam achievements.[1]
Alyx's "gravity gloves" let the player pull objects from a distance: the player first tethers an object, then makes a pulling gesture, and the object flies in an arc toward the hand to be caught.[12][11] Alyx also carries a multitool, which is used to hack Combine devices and to trace power lines through walls in puzzle sections.[1][11] Ammunition, health syringes, grenades and resin are scarce. Resin is spent at upgrade stations to improve weapons. The player has three weapons over the course of the game: a pistol, a shotgun and a Combine pulse rifle.[11]
Enemies include headcrabs, headcrab zombies, Barnacles and Combine soldiers.[1][11] One sequence centers on a blind zombie known as "Jeff"; Valve later included an example map for this enemy in its Workshop tools.[11][13] Road to VR took 12 hours to finish the campaign, and UploadVR described it as over ten hours long.[11][14]
The game was designed with the Valve Index Controllers in mind. Road to VR wrote that it would likely play best on Index because of the controllers' finger tracking, but it supports other SteamVR controllers.[5] Update 1.2.1 fixed hand orientation and missing haptic feedback on Windows Mixed Reality and Vive systems, along with a problem affecting controllers that lack skeletal hand animation support.[15]
Locomotion and comfort
The game supports three movement modes: blink teleport, shift teleport and continuous locomotion. In blink mode the screen fades to black while the player is moved to the target location. In shift mode the screen stays visible and the player is moved rapidly to the chosen spot. Continuous locomotion moves the player smoothly through the environment, closer to traditional keyboard and mouse controls.[16] In a 2020 deep dive, Valve developers Jason Mitchell, Luke Nalker, Greg Coomer and Roland Shaw explained that the team started from the blink teleportation used in The Lab. The Lab's targeting reticle was distracting in the game's realistic environments, so the team showed the player's feet at the destination instead. That indicator also lets players choose which way they face on arrival and shows how much space their body will take up, which mattered when moving into cover. The footprints represent the game's pathing system. The team first tried reusing the navigation mesh used by the AI, which proved too rigid, and then an A*-based approach, which was too computationally intensive. The final system checks that the destination is a valid place for the player's body and that the path to it is viable.[16]
Comfort settings include snap turning, an option for "real" ladder climbing, a setting that decides whether Barnacles can lift the player off the ground, and height adjustment for seated or crouched play.[11] Road to VR found that seated play did not work as well as standing play because many interactions require reaching and leaning.[11] Update 1.1 added a "Continuous Turn" option with speed settings, renamed "Quick turn" to "Snap Turn" and allowed controller turning to be disabled. Update 1.2 added separate left- or right-hand settings for movement and weapon controls.[17][18]
Story
The game takes place between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Since the Black Mesa incident, the alien Combine have tightened their control of Earth and gathered the remaining population into cities. Alyx Vance and her father, the scientist Eli Vance, are founders of an early resistance movement.[1][19] Alyx works with Russell, who runs a laboratory where he helps her plan against the Combine.[20]
Alyx tries to reach the Vault, a large structure hovering above City 17 where Russell believes the Combine are hiding a superweapon. Inside, she finds not Gordon Freeman, as Russell had theorized, but the G-Man. The G-Man shows her the events at the end of Half-Life 2: Episode Two, where Eli is killed by a Combine Advisor, and lets her change them. She kills the Advisor and saves Eli, and the G-Man places her in stasis. In the closing scene, the player controls Gordon Freeman at the end of Episode Two, now with Eli alive and Alyx gone.[21] Before release, Valve developer Robin Walker told Game Informer that the game "does push that story forward" and that players might want to refresh their memory of Episode Two before playing.[22]
Development
Robin Walker told Game Informer that the project grew out of Valve's work on The Lab around the launch of the HTC Vive: many players wanted VR games with more scope and depth, comparable to full-scale triple-A releases. Prototyping began by taking assets and systems from Half-Life 2 into VR. Walker said the series' mechanics proved "a surprisingly natural fit for VR", although standard actions such as aiming a pistol changed character when performed with the player's own hand, which affected level design, pacing and combat tuning.[22] According to Geoff Keighley's The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx, as summarized by Rock Paper Shotgun, the idea for a VR Half-Life came out of an internal "intervention" at Valve in 2016, meant to bring developers together on one large project.[23]
The game was originally meant to launch alongside the Valve Index in 2019. After a company-wide playtest that year, Valve rewrote the story about six months before the planned ship date. That rewrite and other problems moved the release from summer 2019 to spring 2020.[23]
Unlike Gordon Freeman in earlier games, Alyx speaks. Designer Greg Coomer told PC Gamer that making her an active participant in conversations made it "much, much easier to incorporate narrative into the game in natural ways". Ozioma Akagha voices Alyx, replacing Merle Dandridge from the earlier games, and James Moses Black voices Eli, previously played by the late Robert Guillaume. Mike Shapiro returns as the G-Man, Ellen McLain voices the Combine Overwatch broadcasts and Tony Todd voices the Vortigaunts.[12] Rhys Darby plays Russell.[24]
The team was finishing the game when the COVID-19 lockdown took effect in Washington State, and much of the team was already working from home. Valve said the game still shipped on time, but developer commentary and Steam Workshop integration had to wait until after launch.[25]
Release
Valve confirmed the game on 18 November 2019 through its new Twitter account, calling it its "flagship" VR title, and revealed it in full on 21 November 2019 with a trailer and Steam pre-purchase.[26][19] The pre-purchase price was US$59.99.[27] At the reveal, Gabe Newell said: "VR has energized us. We've invested a lot of ourselves in the technology. But we're also game developers at heart, and to be devoting ourselves to a VR game this ambitious is just as exciting."[27]
Valve said the game would run on all SteamVR headsets, including the Valve Index, Oculus Rift and Oculus Rift S, HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro and HTC Vive Cosmos, Windows Mixed Reality headsets and Pimax headsets. Owners of the Index headset, or only the Index controllers, would see the game appear in their library at launch without needing a code. Valve also promised bonus content in 2020 to anyone who ordered Index hardware by the end of 2019: game environments for SteamVR Home, alternate weapon skins and themed content for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.[5] On 4 March 2020, Valve released two preview locations from the game in SteamVR Home for Index owners (an outdoor area of City 17 under the unfinished Citadel and Russell's laboratory). It also announced that the Index, which had been out of stock, would go on sale again on 9 March.[20]
From 21 January 2020 until launch, Valve made every game in the Half-Life collection free to play on Steam, recommending that players catch up on Half-Life 2 and its episodes first.[28] On 2 March 2020, Valve released three gameplay videos, one for each locomotion mode, and gave the release date as 23 March 2020.[29]

The commentary update added more than three hours of audio commentary from the development team on design, art, animation, rendering and sound. Players start a new game with commentary enabled and pick up a floating headset at each point of interest to listen. Valve said the team recorded the voice-overs at home "in closets and blanket forts around greater Seattle".[25]
Steam Workshop and modding
The Workshop update of 15 May 2020 opened the game to Steam Workshop content and released a beta of Valve's community development tools. These included Hammer (the Source 2 level editor), Material Editor, ModelDoc, AnimGraph, Particle Editor, Subrect Editor and Source Filmmaker. Valve also shipped sample maps and the full set of the game's maps as editable source.[8][35] Before the official tools arrived, players had already made mods, including one that made the game playable without a VR headset.[35]
By the game's first anniversary in March 2021, Valve counted more than 800 mods on the Workshop, from model replacements to full campaigns.[36] The community campaign Levitation by FMPONE and CoreyLaddo was released on the Workshop on 25 November 2022. In the free three-to-four-hour campaign, Alyx follows the trail of two rebels who discovered a Combine project and investigates a floating structure; Russell and the G-Man appear.[37]
Steam Frame standalone version
On 14 September 2026, the day Valve opened reservations for the Steam Frame, Road to VR reported that Valve had confirmed a standalone port, which Valve said was "intended to ship to customers soon". According to the report, Valve said the headset's eye tracking and foveated rendering had been "a silver bullet" and that the port took more than a year of extra software work on Vulkan drivers and SteamVR.[38] Valve published the update later that day. It ported the game to ARM64/aarch64 and added foveated rendering and depth reprojection when running standalone on Steam Frame. It also updated most of the engine without changing any game content, and brought performance improvements to desktop PCs.[9]
In an interview with Automaton, Valve said the in-game assets were unchanged. Early foveated rendering and eye tracking experiments, together with the headset's 16 GB of RAM, had shown that the port could work. Valve also said the driver, Vulkan and depth reprojection work would benefit much of the VR catalog, that leaving the content unchanged let existing Workshop content "just work", and that it considered this "the best version of Alyx we've shipped yet".[39] According to UploadVR, Steam Cloud saves let players move between the standalone version and the PC version streamed to the headset. Every Steam Frame kit includes a copy of the game for buyers who do not already own it.[10][40]
The soundtrack was composed by Valve's Mike Morasky, with contributions from original Half-Life composer Kelly Bailey.[41] Morasky had previously worked on music for Valve's Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead games.[42] Valve began selling the soundtrack on Steam on 5 May 2020 with Chapter 1, "Entanglement" (nine tracks in MP3 and FLAC). It said the remaining chapters would follow over the next few months, with each chapter added automatically for buyers.[43] The soundtrack is US$9.99 on Steam, and its 11 chapters are also available on streaming services.[44][2]
On 27 January 2026, Valve announced physical editions with Ipecac Recordings, scheduled for 24 April 2026: a six-LP box set of all 72 tracks limited to 2,000 copies, a two-LP edition of 21 tracks chosen by listeners, and a four-CD edition of all 72 tracks.[45]
Half-Life: Alyx - Final Hours, an interactive account of the game's development by Geoff Keighley, was released on Steam on 9 July 2020 and does not require a VR headset. It contains a 25,000-word story along with puzzles that unlock concept art, footage of prototypes and cancelled projects, an interactive tour of Valve's office, a timeline of Valve projects and an interview with Rhys Darby.[24] Rock Paper Shotgun listed its price at US$9.99 at release; as of October 2026, Steam lists it at US$7.99.[23][24]

The game received "universal acclaim" according to Metacritic.[6] Ben Lang of Road to VR called it "one of the most richly detailed and immersive VR games to date" and "an absolute must-play experience". He criticized the small number of weapons, the limited enemy variety, the lack of melee combat and the gesture menu used to equip weapons.[11] Jamie Feltham of UploadVR called it "a triumphant return", but found that opening doors "never feels quite right" with some movement modes and wrote that the game is more a gun game than a physics playground like Boneworks.[14] In PC Gamer, Christopher Livingston wrote that "revisiting City 17 in VR is a thrill", while noting that the long stretches underground made him impatient for other environments.[47] As of October 2026, its Steam user reviews are rated "Overwhelmingly Positive".[1]
Sales
Valve has not published sales figures. In April 2020, Valve listed the game among the 20 top-selling new Steam releases of March 2020, a list selected by revenue over each game's first two weeks and ordered by release date. Road to VR reported that on launch day it set a record for a VR game on Steam with 42,858 concurrent players.[48] Market research firm SuperData estimated US$40.7 million in revenue and 860,000 buyers in March 2020, not counting copies given free with the Valve Index. SuperData called those sales "modest" compared with major non-VR releases.[49]
