Batman: Arkham Shadow is a single-player action-adventure virtual reality video game developed by Camouflaj and published by Oculus Studios and Warner Bros. Games. It released on October 22, 2024, exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S headsets.[1][2]

The game is part of the Batman: Arkham series and is its second virtual reality title after Batman: Arkham VR (2016). It is a first-person adaptation of the series' melee combat and stealth gameplay, built for room-scale motion controls. The story is set within the established Arkham continuity, between the events of Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Asylum.[3][4]

Batman: Arkham Shadow won Best VR/AR Game at The Game Awards 2024 and Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 28th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards in February 2025.[5][6]

Gameplay

Batman: Arkham Shadow is played from a first-person perspective in virtual reality. It adapts the free-flow melee combat that the Arkham series established in flatscreen games into gesture-based controls, where the player throws physical punches and the strikes function as lunges toward enemies, combined with timed stuns and counters.[3][2] Players use a set of gadgets carried by Batman, including batarangs, a grappling hook, smoke bombs, and explosive gel, with new gadgets unlocking access to previously blocked areas.[3][2]

Stealth, called "predator" gameplay in the series, has the player perch on high vantage points and use Detective Vision to track enemies through walls before performing silent takedowns.[2] Traversal uses the grapple gun and cape gliding rather than free walking alone. The game relies on artificial (smooth) locomotion and does not include a teleport option; the Road to VR review described the movement as "surprisingly comfortable" despite the heavy use of artificial locomotion.[2] Road to VR estimated a main-story length of roughly 10.5 hours on medium difficulty.[2]

Story

The game takes place in the Arkham timeline between Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Asylum, and much of it is set inside Blackgate Penitentiary.[3][4] Batman investigates a new threat, the Rat King, the leader of a cult that plans to execute public officials and attack Gotham City. To infiltrate Blackgate, Batman adopts the alias Matches Malone. The plot also follows district attorney Harvey Dent.[1][3]

The voice cast includes Roger Craig Smith as Batman and Troy Baker as Harvey Dent. Smith and Baker were both nominated for performance awards at the 21st British Academy Games Awards for their roles in the game.[3][7]

Development

Batman: Arkham Shadow was developed by Camouflaj, a studio founded by Ryan Payton that Meta acquired in 2020 and that had previously made the VR title Iron Man VR.[8] Payton directed the project, which was built in the Unity engine.[3] Payton has said he initially doubted that the Arkham combat system could be translated into VR before the team developed its gesture-based approach.[9]

The game was announced in June 2024 and given a launch date of October 22, 2024.[8][1] Meta bundled a free copy of the game with new Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S purchases for a launch-window promotion that ran into 2025, alongside three months of the Meta Quest+ subscription service.[1][10]

A sequel was reported to be in early development at Sanzaru Games, another Meta-owned studio.[11] In January 2026, Meta carried out layoffs across its Reality Labs division and closed several VR studios, including Sanzaru, which ended the sequel project. Camouflaj was not fully shut down but had significant layoffs and stopped developing VR games. Meta framed the cuts as a shift of investment away from VR gaming toward AI-powered smart glasses and wearables.[11]

Reception

Batman: Arkham Shadow received generally favorable reviews. On the review aggregator Metacritic it holds a score of 85 out of 100.[12] On OpenCritic it has a Top Critic Average of 86, a "Mighty" rating, and is recommended by 100% of the 38 critics counted.[13]

Road to VR scored the game 8.5 out of 10, with sub-scores of 9 for gameplay, 7.5 for immersion, and 7 for comfort, calling the combat well adapted to VR while criticizing the narrative pacing and the way non-player characters do not react during dialogue.[2] IGN's Dan Stapleton scored it 8 out of 10, praising the translation of the Arkham formula to VR while noting issues with the stealth controls and boss fights.[3]
