Asgard's Wrath 2 is a single-player action role-playing game developed by Sanzaru Games and published by Oculus Studios for the Meta Quest family of standalone virtual reality headsets. It released worldwide on December 15, 2023 for the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 3.[1][2] It is the sequel to the 2019 PC VR title Asgard's Wrath, and moves the series from tethered PC hardware to mobile standalone headsets.[2]
The game drew unusually strong reviews for a virtual reality title, holding a Top Critic Average of 91 on OpenCritic with 93% of critics recommending it.[3] IGN gave it a perfect 10 out of 10, and Road to VR named it Quest Game of the Year for 2023.[4][5] It later won Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 27th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.[6] Sanzaru Games was closed by Meta in January 2026, making Asgard's Wrath 2 the studio's final release.[7]
Gameplay
Asgard's Wrath 2 is played from a first-person perspective using two tracked motion controllers. The player controls a chosen hero and, over the course of the campaign, takes on the roles of four different playable characters, each with a separate storyline, weapon set, and skill tree.[1][2] Combat is melee-focused and physics-driven: players block with shields, swing and throw weapons, and use abilities tied to each character. The game also retains the series' "god scale" sequences, in which the player towers over the world and manipulates the environment with their hands to solve puzzles.[8][2]
The structure combines mission-based story chapters with an open world that the player explores between objectives, alongside non-player-character interactions, minigames, and boss encounters.[1] Meta describes the campaign as offering more than 60 hours of content.[2] The game's combat, puzzle, and movement design are built specifically around VR motion controls rather than a flatscreen control scheme.[4]
The story begins in a mythologized version of ancient Egypt after the player is freed from captivity, and draws on both Egyptian and Norse mythology. An optional in-game prologue recaps the events of the first game, so prior knowledge of Asgard's Wrath is not required.[1][2]
Development
Sanzaru Games is a California-based studio that developed the original Asgard's Wrath, released for the Oculus Rift on October 10, 2019.[9] Facebook (later Meta) acquired Sanzaru in February 2020, after which the studio operated under Oculus Studios.[9] Work on the sequel began after the first game shipped. Asgard's Wrath 2 was built in Unreal Engine 4 and targeted the more constrained mobile hardware of the standalone Quest line rather than PC VR.[1][8]
The game was announced on June 1, 2023 during the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, where it was presented as a launch title for the then-upcoming Meta Quest 3.[1] After release, Sanzaru issued a Quest 3 specific graphics update that added higher-resolution textures and larger, more detailed enemy and character models, with the option to choose between a higher-fidelity mode and a higher-framerate performance mode.[10]
On January 13, 2026, Meta confirmed the closure of three Reality Labs studios, Sanzaru Games, Twisted Pixel, and Armature Studio, as part of a wider round of layoffs. Meta said it was shifting investment from its metaverse efforts toward wearables. Asgard's Wrath 2 was Sanzaru's last shipped title.[7][11]

Reception
Asgard's Wrath 2 received what Metacritic and several outlets characterized as universal acclaim.[1] On OpenCritic it carries a Top Critic Average of 91 and a "Mighty" rating, with 93% of critics recommending it.[3] One aggregate analysis ranked it among the highest-reviewed games of 2023 across all platforms.[14]
IGN's Travis Northup awarded it 10 out of 10 and an Editors' Choice, writing that it "sets a new gold standard for VR" and calling it "the full-fledged VR open-world RPG I've always wanted to play."[4] Other published scores included 9 out of 10 from Game Informer, 9 out of 10 from God is a Geek, 4.5 out of 5 from Game Rant, and 94 out of 100 from COGconnected.[3]
Reviews were not uniformly positive about every element. UploadVR scored it 3 out of 5, praising the art direction, scale, and VR-specific god-scale puzzles, but criticizing the open world as thin "set dressing," melee combat that lacked tactile feedback, and menus poorly suited to VR. The reviewer's verdict was that "there is a solid VR campaign within Asgard's Wrath 2," qualified by how much of the surrounding design a given player would tolerate.[8]
The game won several awards. Road to VR named it Quest Game of the Year in its 2023 Game of the Year awards.[5] It won Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 27th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, beating nominees including Assassin's Creed Nexus VR, Horizon Call of the Mountain, and Vertigo 2.[6] It also won the Coney Island Dreamland Award for Best AR/VR Game at the 13th New York Game Awards.[1]
