Resolution Games is a privately held Swedish video game developer and publisher based in Stockholm. It is best known for games for virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality devices, and also releases flatscreen PC and console games. It was founded in 2015 by Tommy Palm, Martin Vilcans and Paul Brady, and has a second office in Linköping, Sweden.[1][2] Palm, the studio's CEO, was previously the spokesperson and "games guru" of King, the maker of Candy Crush Saga.[3]

The studio started out on the Samsung Gear VR with the fishing game Bait! and has since released games for headsets including the Oculus Quest and Meta Quest line, PlayStation VR2, Magic Leap One and Apple Vision Pro. Its titles include the cooperative tabletop role-playing game Demeo (2021), the dueling game Blaston, Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs (made with Rovio Entertainment), Racket Club and the mixed reality shooter Spatial Ops.[2][4] Between 2015 and 2021 it raised 38.5 million US dollars in three funding rounds.[4]

History

Founding (2015)

Game Developer (then Gamasutra) reported in May 2015 that Resolution Games was a self-funded studio of eight people (five full-time staff and three contractors) that had launched in January of that year.[5] GamesBeat reported the studio's official launch on 1 May 2015, when it said it would make "VR games that everyone can enjoy and are accessible for the entire family vs hardcore or triple A titles".[3] Palm told Gamasutra that the studio believed "'calmer' game action fits the VR platform better at this point", and that its games would be "more about exploring, creating, puzzle solving and interacting with characters" than about shooting.[5]

Palm had founded the mobile developer Fabrication Games, which King acquired in 2012, and had worked at King until 2014. He first learned to program games on the Commodore 64 in 1986 together with Martin Vilcans, who became Resolution's chief technology officer.[3][6] The company names Palm (CEO), Vilcans (CTO) and Paul Brady (CCO) as its founders. GamesBeat's launch report also listed Måns Ullerstam, former head of the Swedish telecom company Rebtel, as chief operating officer in the founding team.[1][3] The studio's first products were made for the Gear VR, which Vilcans later said "had good enough quality and usability while not being very expensive".[1]

Mobile VR games and funding (2015-2018)

In August 2015 Resolution Games closed a 6 million US dollar Series A round led by Google Ventures (GV). It was GV's first investment in a Swedish company since the firm expanded into Europe. Creandum, Initial Capital, Bonnier Growth Media and Partech Ventures also took part.[7] PocketGamer.biz reported it as the largest venture investment in a VR games developer up to that point. At the time the studio had about 10 employees and had made a VR version of solitaire, Solitaire Jester, and a fishing game.[7][6]

The fishing game, Bait!, was released on the Oculus Store for Samsung Gear VR on 24 March 2016. It was designed to be played with the headset's touchpad and needed no separate controller.[8] The studio said it was downloaded almost 150,000 times in its first five days, by users in 160 countries. PocketGamer.biz described this as the first time download figures had been published for a game on an Oculus-powered platform.[9] Bait! came to Google Daydream in January 2017 and passed two million downloads by June 2017, when the Gear VR version gained support for the new Gear VR controller.[10]

The carnival-themed mini-game collection Wonderglade followed on 10 November 2016 as one of the first games on Daydream.[11] In October 2017 the studio announced Narrows, a pirate adventure for Daydream. Palm called it the studio's "biggest game yet".[12]

In June 2018 Mathieu Castelli, creator of the location-based mobile game Mogi, joined as chief creative officer. Former Mojang artist Henrik Pettersson joined as art director, and GV general partner Joe Kraus and former Paradox Interactive CFO Andras Vajlok joined the advisory board.[13] In October 2018 Resolution and Rovio Entertainment released Angry Birds FPS: First Person Slingshot, a free augmented reality game for the Magic Leap One Creator Edition. Rovio described it as the first third-party game available for the headset.[14][15]

On 23 October 2018 the company closed a 7.5 million US dollar Series B round led by MizMaa Ventures, with new investors GP Bullhound and Unity founder David Helgason, and with GV, Partech, Bonnier Ventures, Creandum and Sisu Game Ventures returning. Total funding reached 13.5 million US dollars.[16] PocketGamer.biz reported that the round valued the company at 87.5 million US dollars, and Palm said the studio was already profitable.[17]

Standalone headsets and growth (2019-2022)

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, developed with Rovio, launched on 7 February 2019 for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive through the Oculus Store, Steam and Viveport.[18] On 29 August 2019 the studio released its eighth title, Acron: Attack of the Squirrels!, an asymmetric party game. One player in a headset defends a tree's golden acorns, and up to eight others join as squirrels on phones.[19]

Two veteran designers took roles at the studio in 2020. Mike Booth, the creator of Left 4 Dead, joined its board of directors in March and was to work with its game teams.[20] In June, Tom Hall, director and co-designer of Wolfenstein 3-D who also worked on Doom, joined as senior creative director.[21] The studio's second Magic Leap game, the detective game Glimt: The Vanishing at the Grand Starlight Hotel, came out on 26 March 2020. The studio called it its tenth game and its third augmented reality title. It was made as part of the Magic Leap Independent Creator Program.[22] Two multiplayer games for the Oculus Quest followed: the cooperative cooking game Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale on 3 September 2020 and the one-on-one dueling game Blaston on 8 October 2020.[23][24]

In November 2020 Resolution started a publishing initiative to bring existing games to more VR platforms. Its first deal was with Odd Raven Studios for Carly and the Reaperman, which Resolution released on the Quest on 15 April 2021.[25][26] Demeo launched on 6 May 2021 on the Oculus Quest Store and on Steam for Rift, Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.[27] PocketGamer.biz reported in July 2021 that, according to the studio, the game had passed "the multi-million dollar mark".[28]

On 14 July 2021 the company closed a 25 million US dollar Series C round co-led by Qualcomm Ventures and BITKRAFT Ventures, followed by Knutsson Holdings, with earlier investors GV, MizMaa, GP Bullhound, Partech, Creandum, Initial Capital, Bonnier Ventures and Sisu Game Ventures also taking part. Total funding came to 38.5 million US dollars. Boaz Peer of Qualcomm Ventures joined the board, and the company said it had more than 100 employees.[4][29]

In November 2021 Resolution acquired Zero Index, a four-person studio in Linköping that had helped port Carly and the Reaperman to the Quest. Zero Index was renamed Resolution Tech, and its CEO, Tomas Ahlström, stayed on as studio manager.[30] In March 2022 Fast Company included the company in its Most Innovative Companies list for 2022, in the augmented and virtual reality category.[31] A flatscreen version, Demeo: PC Edition, entered Early Access on Steam on 7 April 2022 with cross-play against VR players.[32]

In July 2022 the company reported that 2021 had been its fifth consecutive profitable year. It said B2C revenue had grown almost fourfold and game downloads threefold compared with 2020. It had 108 employees at the end of 2021 and 158 at the time of the announcement.[33] In the same announcement it disclosed a US subsidiary, Resolution Games Inc., in Austin, Texas, run by co-founder Paul Brady (then president), and the talent acquisition of Stockholm studio Zenz VR, maker of HordeZ. Zenz VR's existing and in-development games stayed with their creators. Its founder, Niklas Persson, joined the AR division the company had set up in late 2021. That division had made proof-of-concept projects with Meta for its Presence Platform and with Qualcomm for Snapdragon Spaces.[33][34] The free-to-play mech sports game Ultimechs launched on 15 September 2022 for Quest 2, SteamVR and Pico headsets.[35]

Consoles, mixed reality and Apple Vision Pro (2023-present)

Demeo came to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 on 22 February 2023, the game's console debut.[36] In June 2023 the World Economic Forum named Resolution Games one of its 2023 Technology Pioneers.[37] Two new games came out later that year: the competitive spin-off Demeo Battles on 9 November 2023 for Steam (flatscreen and VR) and Meta Quest, and Racket Club, an original racket sport, on 14 December 2023 for Meta Quest, Pico and SteamVR.[38][39]

The studio's first Apple Vision Pro title, Game Room, a collection of board and card games such as chess, hearts and solitaire, was released on Apple Arcade on 2 February 2024 for the headset's launch; it was also playable on iPhone and iPad.[40] UploadVR reported that Apple contracted the studio to build Game Room and the tower defense game Gears & Goo for its Apple Arcade service.[41] In May 2024 Johan Gästrin, who had been head of technology since 2021 and had set up a Shared Tech department that leads the studio's proprietary technology platform "Fidelity", was promoted to chief technology officer.[42]

The mixed reality first-person shooter Spatial Ops was released on 14 November 2024 for Meta Quest headsets, with a Campaign Edition for PICO. It turns the player's room into a battlefield and has a co-located multiplayer arena mode.[43] Home Sports, a mixed reality collection of pickleball, mini golf, hockey, bowling and badminton for Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S, followed on 11 December 2024 at 19.99 US dollars.[44] Gears & Goo, the studio's third Vision Pro title, came to Apple Arcade on 10 January 2025.[45] In October 2025 the studio released Pickle Pro, a pickleball game for Vision Pro priced at 7.99 US dollars. The studio called it one of the first games to use the spatial game controller support, including PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, added in visionOS 26. Its computer opponents are trained with machine learning; UploadVR reported that the training used gameplay data from Racket Club.[46][41]

Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked, made in collaboration with Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast, launched on 20 November 2025 with cross-play across Steam (PC, Mac and PC VR), PlayStation 5 and PS VR2, and the Meta Horizon Store.[47] Its third campaign, Twilight's End, and an Xbox version followed on 22 September 2026; by then the game was also listed as available on Nintendo Switch 2.[48] On 5 February 2026 Resolution released Retrocade on Apple Arcade for Apple Vision Pro, iPhone and iPad. It is a collection of 1980s arcade games, including Asteroids, Pac-Man, Galaga and Space Invaders, that can be played in a virtual arcade hall, with cabinets placed in the player's room, or in a window.[49] With Spatial Ops: Campaign Edition on 21 April 2026, the company said it had become the first to release six titles on Apple Vision Pro.[50]

In September 2026 the company still described Tommy Palm as its founder and CEO.[48] The company still updates older games. Bait! got a tenth-anniversary update in March 2026, and the studio said a mixed reality mode with hand tracking and passthrough would follow later in 2026. Demeo got an anniversary patch for its fifth birthday in May 2026.[51][52] On 6 October 2026 the studio announced that GrimKeep, a non-VR roguelite dice-building game by a small internal team, would be released on 30 November 2026 for Windows and macOS through Steam and for PlayStation 5, priced at 14.99 US dollars.[53]

XR work

Resolution's early design approach was built around the limits of mobile VR. GamesBeat reported in 2015 that the team had kept movement in Bait! to a minimum to avoid motion sickness.[6] Bait! and Wonderglade were made for the Gear VR touchpad and the Daydream motion controller.[8][11] Later games moved to social and multiplayer play. Several have a "Tinyverse", an in-game social hangout where players meet between matches. Examples are Casters' Cove in Bait!, the Ozo Lounge in Blaston and Heroes' Hangout in Demeo.[55] Several titles mix headset and non-headset players, such as phone players in Acron and cross-play with the flatscreen PC edition of Demeo.[19][32]

The studio has made augmented reality games since the Magic Leap One Creator Edition. Its AR division, formed in late 2021, worked on mixed reality prototypes with Meta and Qualcomm.[33] On Meta Quest 3, Spatial Ops and Home Sports use the player's room as the play space, and Spatial Ops supports co-located matches in a shared physical space.[43][44] On Apple Vision Pro it has released six titles: Game Room, Demeo, Gears & Goo, Pickle Pro, Retrocade and Spatial Ops: Campaign Edition.[50] Demeo was also available when Samsung's Galaxy XR headset launched on Android XR in October 2025.[56]

For lightweight AR glasses, the studio has made small experimental games for Snap's Spectacles in Lens Studio; its website now lists them as games for Snap Specs. The first was Snak, a snake game steered with a pinch-and-pull hand gesture, which the studio called its first shipped AR glasses game. S-Cab and Lone Orbit followed, and Core Boom is listed as coming soon.[57][58] For arcades and location-based VR venues, the company lists Angry Birds VR, Cook-Out, Blaston and Ultimechs through Synthesis VR and SpringboardVR (the first two also through Steam's PC cafe program) and offers commercial licenses for Spatial Ops.[59]
