Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked is a cooperative, turn-based tactical role-playing game developed and published by Resolution Games under license from Wizards of the Coast. It adapts the tabletop miniatures system of Resolution's earlier Demeo to the Dungeons & Dragons setting of the Forgotten Realms. The game released on November 20, 2025 for Meta Quest, PlayStation 5 with PlayStation VR2 support, and PC and Mac through Steam, including PC VR.[1][2]

The game supports one to four players, with cross-platform multiplayer, and does not use a Dungeon Master.[3] It launched with two story campaigns, Embers of Chaos and Crown of Frost. A third, paid campaign, Twilight's End, was released on September 22, 2026, on the same day the game arrived on Xbox.[4] A non-VR version followed on Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2026. Resolution Games announced a PICO version in July 2026, and UploadVR listed the game as available on Pico in August 2026.[5][6][7]

Gameplay

Like Demeo, Battlemarked recreates a tabletop session: each hero is a figurine that players pick up and move across a tile-based map on a virtual table. In VR the player moves around the board by pressing a controller trigger and pulling, and rotates it by doing the same with both hands. The game uses a third-person tabletop perspective, which UploadVR's reviewer described as comfortable, and an optional vignette is available while moving.[8]

Combat is turn-based. Each hero has two action points per turn; moving, attacking and using stronger abilities each cost one point, while some cards, such as healing potions and poison antidotes, can be played freely while points remain. Attacks still depend on a dice roll, including critical hits and misses.[8] Road to VR describes the system as Demeo's Action Roleplaying System, which uses class-specific action cards and a simplified d20 marked with icons for hits, critical hits and misses in place of the full tabletop rules.[9] Gold collected in dungeons buys new cards at a bazaar between the stages of longer dungeons, and experience points earned from enemies and side quests unlock new abilities chosen from sets of three options tied to the hero's class and ability-score proficiencies.[8]

Wizards of the Coast and Resolution Games described the design as "a DM-less system that focuses on social strategy rather than social roleplay", with discussion at the table centered on tactics.[3] Skill checks appear outside combat, mainly for traps, obstacles and choices during side quests.[8]

Heroes

Six heroes were playable at launch, one per class. At launch, customization was limited to cosmetic changes to each class's base hero.[2][8] Two more were added in updates in 2026.[10][5]

Hero Species Class Availability
Bolthrax Dragonborn Paladin Launch
Tibby Halfling Sorcerer Launch
Jessix Human Ranger Launch
Ash Tiefling Rogue Launch
Tharok Dwarf Fighter Launch
Lyria Elf Bard Launch
Azruss Drevontir Human Warlock Warlock Update (March 17, 2026), unlocked through the side quest "The Shard's Shadow" in Crown of Frost
Gruda Razortusk Orc Druid Druid Update (June 16, 2026), unlocked through the side quest "Bear Hunting" in the first campaign

[11][2][10][5]

At launch, solo players and parties with fewer than four people filled the remaining seats with hirelings, which did not level up; UploadVR's review criticized this.[8] Resolution Games then reworked the system in two phases. In December 2025, single-player parties of up to four of the player's own heroes, all earning experience, replaced hirelings. The Warlock Update in March 2026 removed hirelings from multiplayer, so every hero at the table now belongs to a player's progressing roster.[12][10]

VR and mixed reality features

The Quest version supports hand tracking, mixed reality play on a virtual board placed in the player's real surroundings, and co-location, which lets people in the same room sit around one shared board. UploadVR's reviewer found controllers more precise than hand tracking. The PlayStation VR2 and PC VR versions lack these Quest-specific features. The Steam and PlayStation 5 versions can also be played on a flat screen.[8] The September 2026 update added a "local anchor mode" on Quest that creates a spatial anchor on the nearest scene-mapped table. It also added a VR setting to hide the surrounding apartment environment.[4]

Campaigns

The campaigns are set in the Forgotten Realms. Embers of Chaos features locations such as Neverwinter Wood and Cragmaw Castle, and Crown of Frost takes place in Icewind Dale, including Ten Towns' Lonelywood, Frost Keep and the Spine of the World.[1] UploadVR's reviewer took roughly six hours to finish each launch campaign; completed longer missions become available as standalone "one-shot" dungeons.[8]

Twilight's End picks up story threads from Embers of Chaos and Crown of Frost, and the developer described it as bringing the saga that began in Neverwinter Wood and Frost Keep to its conclusion.[4][7] It starts at the dwarven hold of Mithral Hall and crosses the Silver Marches, returning to familiar lands changed by the earlier conflicts.[4] It costs US$9.99 on Meta Quest, where the base game is US$29.99.[13] Resolution Games says it supports parties of one to four heroes and offers about six hours of story for experienced players, plus optional side quests.[9] UploadVR's reviewer took nine hours to complete it.[14] Meta's announcement lists the owl bear and the specter among the new enemies.[13] The same update added saving throws, new dice and piece baseplates, and a couch co-op mode ("Pass and Play", plus multiple controllers on Steam and Xbox) for the non-VR versions; local co-op is not available in VR.[4]

Development

Resolution Games, a Stockholm-based studio founded in 2015, released the original Demeo in 2021. Resolution and Wizards of the Coast, a division of Hasbro, announced Battlemarked on January 29, 2025, and at that point said only that it would come to PC, consoles and XR devices. The announcement promised two campaigns at launch and further campaigns in other Dungeons & Dragons settings as downloadable content.[3] In the announcement, Resolution Games founder and CEO Tommy Palm said that Demeo and Demeo Battles "quickly became a game night substitute for Dungeon Masters who wanted an out-of-campaign way to have fun with their groups".[3]

Matt Sernett, a former writer and game designer at Wizards of the Coast, was the game's narrative designer.[1] Gustav Stenmark was game director.[15] The release date was announced on October 2, 2025, together with a free flatscreen PC demo for Steam Next Fest starting October 13 that featured four of the six launch heroes.[2] The second campaign, Crown of Frost, was revealed on November 4, 2025.[1]

Reception

On Metacritic, the PC version has a Metascore of 80 based on 7 critic reviews, and the Nintendo Switch 2 version has 78 based on 5 reviews.[20] OpenCritic lists a Top Critic Average of 83 with a "Strong" rating, and 92% of critics recommend it, based on 13 reviews.[21]

UploadVR's Henry Stockdale gave the game 4 out of 5 stars. He called it "a fitting evolution that's both newcomer-friendly and expands upon the original Demeo well" and noted the longer campaigns, better difficulty balancing and visuals on Quest 3. His criticisms covered repeated voice lines, limited hero customization, hirelings that did not level up, and few meaningful story choices; he described the game as "a deliberately simplified take" on Dungeons & Dragons.[8] UploadVR's Mike Johnson gave Twilight's End 4.5 out of 5 stars. He praised its boss battles and the new tracks in its orchestral score, but found the Silver Marches setting and its reused locations less visually interesting than the earlier campaigns.[14]
