Demeo is a cooperative tabletop role-playing game developed and published by the Swedish studio Resolution Games. It recreates the experience of a turn-based dungeon crawler played around a physical board, with up to four players moving miniature figures, drawing action cards, and rolling dice to fight through procedurally arranged dungeons. The game launched first as a virtual reality title on May 6, 2021, and later expanded to flatscreen PC, PlayStation VR2, and the Apple Vision Pro, with cross-platform play between VR and non-VR users.

Demeo is the most prominent release from Resolution Games, which described it at launch as its ninth self-published standalone VR game. It won Game of the Year at the 2021 VR Awards and was nominated for Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.

Gameplay

Demeo is a turn-based dungeon crawler modeled on tabletop role-playing games. One to four players share a virtual board representing a dungeon level and take turns moving their figures across a grid of tiles. Each player controls one of several hero classes; the base game shipped with the Guardian, the Assassin, the Sorcerer, and the Hunter, each with distinct abilities. On a turn, a player spends a limited number of action points to move, attack, or play cards drawn into their hand. Cards represent spells, ranged attacks, healing, and items, and some actions are resolved by throwing a physical die onto the board.

The board can be scaled and rotated, and in VR players reach in to pick up and place their figures by hand. Enemies act on their own turn, and a campaign adventure is cleared by descending through several procedurally laid out floors toward a boss. Beyond the cooperative campaign, the game includes a single-player skirmish mode and a social space, the Heroes' Hangout, where players can paint miniatures and gather between sessions.

Development

Demeo was developed by Resolution Games, a Stockholm-based studio founded in 2015 that had previously released VR titles such as Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs and Acron: Attack of the Squirrels. The studio self-published Demeo and described it as its ninth standalone VR game at launch. The design draws on classic tabletop role-playing games and collectible card games; press coverage and the developer cited Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering as reference points.

After the VR launch, Resolution Games published a 2022 roadmap that added new dungeon adventures, a player-versus-player mode, and a flatscreen PC edition. The studio said the PC version had been rebuilt so that it could be played without a headset while remaining compatible with the existing VR player base. Owners of either edition received access to the other, so a purchase of the PC version also unlocked the VR version and the reverse.

Release

Demeo first released for Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest and Quest 2, HTC Vive, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality on May 6, 2021, at US $29.99. A flatscreen PC edition followed in Steam Early Access on April 7, 2022, adding cross-play between VR and non-VR players. The game came to PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation 5 on February 22, 2023, and to the Apple Vision Pro through the visionOS App Store on May 23, 2024, where a single purchase covered all of Apple's platforms.

Resolution Games also shipped related titles. Demeo Battles, a competitive player-versus-player spin-off, launched for PC and Quest on November 9, 2023, at US $19.99. In November 2025, Resolution Games and Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast released Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked, a standalone release built on official Dungeons & Dragons settings and classes, for Quest 2 and newer, SteamVR headsets, and PlayStation VR2, with cross-play across PC and PS5.

Reception

Demeo received generally favorable reviews. The review aggregator Metacritic lists a score of 83 out of 100 for the PC version and 80 out of 100 for the PlayStation 5 version. Writing for MIXED, reviewer coverage of the PlayStation VR2 release praised the game as a co-op tabletop experience with depth.

The game won Game of the Year at the 2021 VR Awards, held on November 18, 2021, beating a field that included Star Wars: Squadrons and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge. It was nominated for Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards and for VR Game of the Year at the 2022 SXSW Gaming Awards, where it lost to Resident Evil 4 VR.
