Demeo is a cooperative tabletop role-playing game developed and published by the Swedish studio Resolution Games. It recreates the experience of a turn-based dungeon crawler played around a physical board, with up to four players moving miniature figures, drawing action cards, and rolling dice to fight through procedurally arranged dungeons.[1][2] The game launched first as a virtual reality title on May 6, 2021, and later expanded to flatscreen PC, PlayStation VR2, and the Apple Vision Pro, with cross-platform play between VR and non-VR users.[2][3][4] In October 2025 it became a launch title for Samsung's Galaxy XR headset on Google's Android XR platform.[5][6]

Resolution Games described Demeo at launch as its ninth self-published standalone VR game.[7] It won Game of the Year at the 2021 VR Awards and was nominated for Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.[8][9]

Gameplay

Demeo is a turn-based dungeon crawler modeled on tabletop role-playing games. One to four players share a virtual board representing a dungeon level and take turns moving their figures across a grid of tiles.[2][7] Each player controls one of several hero classes; the base game shipped with the Guardian, the Assassin, the Sorcerer, and the Hunter, each with distinct abilities.[10] On a turn, a player spends a limited number of action points to move, attack, or play cards drawn into their hand. Cards represent spells, ranged attacks, healing, and items, and some actions are resolved by throwing a physical die onto the board.[7][2]

The board can be scaled and rotated, and in VR players reach in to pick up and place their figures by hand.[7] Enemies act on their own turn, and a campaign adventure is cleared by descending through several procedurally laid out floors toward a boss.[10] Beyond the cooperative campaign, the game includes a single-player skirmish mode and a social space, the Heroes' Hangout, where players can paint miniatures and gather between sessions.[11][10] Later additions to the hero roster include Uhrak the Barbarian, whose hook weapon lets him cross longer distances on the board or pull enemies and allies toward him.[12] As of September 2026, the game's Steam store page lists seven classes: hunter, sorcerer, assassin, guardian, bard, warlock and barbarian.[13]

Development

Demeo was developed by Resolution Games, a Stockholm-based studio founded in 2015 that had previously released VR titles such as Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs and Acron: Attack of the Squirrels. The studio self-published Demeo and described it as its ninth standalone VR game at launch.[7] The design draws on classic tabletop role-playing games and collectible card games; press coverage and the developer cited Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering as reference points.[10][7]

After the VR launch, Resolution Games published a 2022 roadmap that added new dungeon adventures, a player-versus-player mode, and a flatscreen PC edition. The studio said the PC version had been rebuilt so that it could be played without a headset while remaining compatible with the existing VR player base.[14][3] Owners of either edition received access to the other, so a purchase of the PC version also unlocked the VR version and the reverse.[15]

Post-launch updates

Resolution Games released new Demeo adventures as free updates. The fifth adventure, Reign of Madness, was released on December 15, 2022, for Quest and PC VR, with a Pico release to follow; the studio called it the "fifth and final chapter" of the game's Mad Elven King Saga. It added Uhrak the Barbarian and an orchestral arrangement of the main theme recorded by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.[12] Road to VR reported that with this update the game had five chapters and six playable characters, and that Resolution Games planned to raise the price of Demeo from US $30 to US $40 starting on January 12, 2023.[16] In February 2023 UploadVR listed the game at US $39.99 on Meta Quest, PC VR, Pico and PlayStation VR2.[17]

In April 2025, Resolution Games released a technical update that moved the game to Unity 6 and the engine's Universal Render Pipeline (URP), after about ten months of work on the game's underlying technology. The studio said the update brought faster loading times, better performance and reworked materials and lighting, and that it enabled eye-tracked foveation on supported devices.[18] According to UploadVR, eye-tracked foveated rendering became active on the Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest Pro, and the Vision Pro version gained a passthrough option in its immersive mode, giving it the mixed reality mode that Quest and Pico players already had.[19]

For the game's fifth anniversary, Resolution Games released a patch on May 6, 2026, that added five new player ranks with cosmetic rewards and a Unity engine update intended for "continued security and stability across platforms". The announcement listed Meta Quest, SteamVR, Steam on PC, PlayStation VR2, PlayStation 5, Pico, Apple Vision Pro, iPad, Mac, Android XR and the Epic Games Store as supported platforms.[20]

Release

Demeo first released for Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest and Quest 2, HTC Vive, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality on May 6, 2021, at US $29.99.[2] It was part of the announced launch lineup of the Pico Store for the Pico Neo 3 Link in Europe in 2022; the Pico version initially had no cross-play, which was added in a February 2023 update.[21][17] A flatscreen PC edition followed in Steam Early Access on April 7, 2022, adding cross-play between VR and non-VR players.[3][15] The game came to PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation 5 on February 22, 2023, and to the Apple Vision Pro through the visionOS App Store on May 23, 2024, where a single purchase covered all of Apple's platforms.[22][4]

In December 2024, Resolution Games announced that Demeo would come to Android XR.[23] On October 21, 2025, the studio announced that Demeo was available through Google Play as a launch title for the Samsung Galaxy XR, with cross-platform play alongside players on PC, PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest and other devices.[5][6] Xreal's June 16, 2026, announcement of the Xreal Aura, Android XR glasses it scheduled for a fall 2026 launch, said that Resolution Games was bringing Demeo to the device, with play alongside users of Galaxy XR, Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro, Pico and PlayStation VR2 headsets.[24]

As of September 2026, the Steam version is priced at US $39.99; it is listed for Windows and macOS and supports VR headsets as well as flatscreen play.[13]

Resolution Games also shipped related titles. Demeo Battles, a competitive player-versus-player spin-off, launched for PC and Quest on November 9, 2023, at US $19.99.[25][26] On November 20, 2025, Resolution Games and Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast released Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked, a standalone release built on official Dungeons & Dragons settings and classes, for Quest 2 and newer, SteamVR headsets, and PlayStation VR2, with cross-play across PC and PS5.[1][27] Its third campaign, Twilight's End, released on September 22, 2026, the same day the game launched on Xbox Series X/S.[28][29]

Reception

Demeo received generally favorable reviews. The review aggregator Metacritic lists a score of 83 out of 100 for the PC version and 80 out of 100 for the PlayStation 5 version.[10] Writing for MIXED, reviewer coverage of the PlayStation VR2 release praised the game as a co-op tabletop experience with depth.[22]

The game won Game of the Year at the 2021 VR Awards, held on November 18, 2021, beating a field that included Star Wars: Squadrons and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge.[8] In its Best of 2021 awards, UploadVR named it VR Game of the Year and also gave it the Best Co-op Multiplayer and Best PC VR Game awards, calling it "easily the best VR tactics game we've yet seen".[30] It was nominated for Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards and for VR Game of the Year at the 2022 SXSW Gaming Awards, where it lost to Resident Evil 4 VR.[9][31]
