Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is a physics-based puzzle game for virtual reality headsets, developed by the Stockholm studio Resolution Games in partnership with Rovio Entertainment, the Finnish company behind the Angry Birds franchise. It was the first Angry Birds game made for VR: the player holds the slingshot in one hand, launches Red, Chuck, Bomb and the Blues at the green pigs' structures, and can teleport between viewpoints around each level.[1][2]
The game launched on February 7, 2019 for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive through the Oculus Store, Steam and Viveport.[1] It reached PlayStation VR on March 26, 2019, was one of the launch titles of the Oculus Quest on May 21, 2019, and came to PlayStation VR2 on October 10, 2023.[3][4][5] Free updates raised the campaign from 52 to 104 levels, added a level builder with online sharing, and in March 2024 added a mixed reality mode on Meta Quest and Pico headsets.[6][7][8]
Gameplay
The player recovers stolen eggs on an island where the green pigs take their vacation. The main "Vacation Levels" campaign moves across exotic beaches, steep cliffs and snowy slopes up to a party city, and the player clears each level by popping every pig, either with a direct hit or by bringing the structure down on top of it.[1][9][10] As in the mobile games, levels award up to three stars.[1] Each bird has a special ability triggered in mid-air: Chuck dashes forward, the Blues split into three, and Bomb explodes.[10][11]
The two controllers act as a slingshot and a pointer. A bird jumps into the slingshot at the start of a shot; the player brings the pointer close, holds the trigger and pulls back to add power, while an arc of white dots shows roughly where the bird will land. Releasing the trigger fires the bird. Levels contain several Position Points, and the player can teleport between them to see the structure from a different angle and shoot from there.[10][12] A patch on February 14, 2019 added a left-hand control option and a setting that turns off the aiming arc to make the game harder.[13]
The base game has four worlds of 13 levels each.[14] A second campaign, the "Spooky Levels", adds four more worlds of 13 levels in which Dr. Frankenswine, a new boss pig, takes over the island; its first update introduced the Alchemy Bomb, a block that transforms other blocks when it explodes.[6][7][15] In a launch interview on Meta's Quest blog, the studio said the birds follow the player with a wave or salute, and the pigs taunt the player and cower when aimed at.[12]
Level builder
A level builder arrived as a free update in December 2019. Players build levels from wood, ice, rock, TNT, fans, boulders and decoration blocks, place regular and boss pigs, pick which birds can be used, and set the teleport points.[16][17] At first, levels could only be played on the device where they were built. An online mode on July 2, 2020 let players upload levels, browse and rank other players' creations, enter a level code from a friend, or use a quick-play option for a random level.[18][19] UploadVR reported that the online mode launched on Rift, Quest, Steam and Viveport, with PlayStation VR to follow.[19]
Resolution Games says the game is the only one in the franchise with a level builder. In a 2021 studio blog post, its developers explained that block placement is limited to 45-degree angles so that player-built levels behave consistently under the physics simulation, and that a "performance cost bar" fills as blocks are placed, with fans and TNT costing more, so that custom levels run smoothly on the less powerful platforms. The online mode was the first time the studio built a dedicated server for a game.[20]
Mixed reality mode
A free update on March 26, 2024 added a mixed reality mode for the Meta Quest and Pico versions. It uses passthrough video and room mapping to place a more compact version of each level in the player's room, where it can be moved, rotated and scaled, and blocks and pigs bounce off real surfaces. Players can also aim the slingshot with hand tracking instead of controllers.[8][21][22] According to GamesBeat and UploadVR, it was the seventh Resolution Games title with mixed reality support.[21][8] GamesBeat reported that the PlayStation VR2 and Steam versions would not receive the mode.[21] Paul Brady, president of Resolution Games, said that playing a familiar game mixed into the living room is "incredibly impactful and surreal."[21]
Development
In the same launch interview, Resolution Games producer Huiting Wang said the project began when Rovio approached the studio about an augmented reality game for Magic Leap. The studio did not yet have a Magic Leap headset, so its first builds ran on a VR headset that simulated AR, and "as soon as we had the first build, we knew it would only be natural to make a VR version."[12] Resolution Games and Rovio released Angry Birds FPS: First Person Slingshot as a free AR game for the Magic Leap One on October 9, 2018, with 28 levels.[23] Wang said teleport points were added because the VR levels cover larger distances.[12]
Rovio and Resolution Games announced Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs on December 19, 2018, for release in early 2019 on all major VR platforms.[2] At launch, Sami Ronkainen, Rovio's creative director for extended reality, said investigating new technology and platforms was one of the company's core strategic pillars, and Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm said VR "inherently lends itself well to strong characters."[1]
A separate mobile game, Angry Birds AR: Isle of Pigs, was released by Rovio and Resolution Games as a free iOS download on April 29, 2019. It uses Apple's ARKit to overlay more than 50 levels with the same beach, cliff and snow settings on the player's surroundings, and Rovio called it the first Angry Birds mobile AR game.[24]

Reception
| Aggregator | Platform | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic | PC | 79/100 (9 critic reviews)[36] |
| Metacritic | PlayStation 5 (PS VR2) | 82/100 (5 critic reviews)[37] |
| OpenCritic | All | Top Critic Average 77; 60% of critics recommend (15 reviews)[38] |
Road to VR gave the PC version 8.5 out of 10. Scott Hayden praised the intuitive shooting and called it a "pure" Angry Birds experience, but found the difficulty curve flat in the later levels and the physics-driven boss fights frustrating, and noted there were no special levels or extra achievements to chase. He rated comfort highly because movement uses teleportation and the game can be played seated.[14] Reviewing the game on PC VR, Quest and PlayStation VR in 2021, after the spooky levels and level builder had been added, UploadVR's Harry Baker gave it 4 out of 5 stars. He wrote that the gameplay "has translated remarkably well to roomscale VR" and that set shooting positions remove the need to keep managing the guardian boundary, while finding the main campaign easy for experienced players and some spooky levels closer to fixed puzzles.[6]
Metacritic lists two critic reviews of the PlayStation VR version, 70 from PlayStation Universe and 60 from Push Square, too few for a Metascore.[39] In a hands-on with the mixed reality mode on Meta Quest 3, MIXED called it "the most enjoyable and beautiful way to play Angry Birds VR" but found Quest hand tracking too imprecise for the game and preferred controllers.[22]
