Racket Club is a virtual reality racket sports game developed and published by the Swedish studio Resolution Games. It was released on December 14, 2023, for Meta Quest headsets, Pico headsets and SteamVR, priced at US$24.99.[1][2] Its original sport is played inside a small court enclosed by four clear walls and draws on tennis, pickleball, squash and padel. Players move with their own feet rather than with artificial locomotion.[3][2]
The game centers on online singles and doubles matches in a social club space, with a single-player career mode against bots trained with machine learning on data from human matches.[4] It also has an optional mixed reality mode. Updates since launch have added further courts, rule variants and sports; after the February 2025 update the game offered four sports: box tennis (the original sport), Spinminton, pickleball and table tennis.[5]
Gameplay
Matches take place on a compact court surrounded by four clear walls. The ball can be played off the side and back walls, which produces ricochets and angles.[3][6] In the launch scoring system, the point value of a rally rises the longer the ball goes back and forth.[3] UploadVR's review described rally values capped at an "Ultra Rally" worth five points.[7] The Steam store page gives a minimum play space of 6.5 x 6.5 feet.[2] In its review, MIXED wrote that about 9 x 9 feet is better for competitive play.[8]
Online play covers singles (one against one) and doubles (two against two) matches, with up to four players on a court. Players meet in a shared club space where they can watch matches and find partners.[1] The Steam version lists a spectator mode and cross-platform multiplayer.[2] The single-player modes are Practice (singles matches against an AI opponent), Drills (objectives that teach basic and advanced techniques and the rules) and Career (championship brackets against AI opponents in venues around the world).[4][9]
Resolution Games trained its AI opponents with deep reinforcement learning and deep imitation learning on anonymized data collected from real players. Mikhail Jacob, the studio's lead machine learning engineer, said training on human matches instead of "pre-designed patterns of behavior" gave rivals "whose play is indistinguishable from real life competitors."[4]
Players earn experience points from matches. Twenty rackets were available at launch, each weighted differently toward spin, speed and mass, along with cosmetic items such as hairstyles, sneakers and sweatbands for the player's avatar.[4][10]
Mixed reality mode
The mixed reality mode uses passthrough to bring the court into the player's room.[11] Players set up court walls that blend the virtual court with their real environment; their own side uses the real surroundings, while the opponent's side stays fully digital and is seen through a portal wall. The mode is not available in the club area.[10] Resolution Games listed mixed reality support for Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro and Pico 4 at launch.[4]
Development
At the game's launch, Resolution Games described itself as a privately held studio founded in 2015 and based in Stockholm, with offices in Austin, Texas, and Linköping, Sweden. Its earlier VR games include Demeo and Blaston.[1] The studio announced Racket Club in December 2022 during its own showcase. UploadVR described that first trailer as "fairly light on details and gameplay".[6] A gameplay trailer followed at the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase on June 1, 2023. It showed the walled court, the rally scoring and the planned singles, doubles and career modes, and the game opened for wishlisting on the Quest Store and Steam.[6][3]
On November 15, 2023, the studio set the December 14 release date, revealed the mixed reality mode and the single-player modes, and opened pre-orders with a 12 percent discount on the Meta Quest Store.[4][9] At launch, Chief Creative Officer Mathieu Castelli said the team had combined favorite elements of popular racket sports "with just enough leeway to create a level of fun that is only possible in VR."[1]

Updates
Resolution Games has expanded the game with free updates.[12][13]
| Update | Date | Main additions |
|---|---|---|
| A New Spin | February 2024 | Unranked online play; a choice between Ultra Rally scoring and single-point rallies; optional wall serve rules; new singles drills; player statistics and a redesigned profile; new cosmetics[12][14] |
| Fun Courts | May 2024 | A wider court and a Spinminton court; a ball cannon usable on any court; a higher maximum player level; push-to-talk; new clothing; tuning controls for racket adapters[13] |
| Pickleball Update | February 25, 2025 | Pickleball promoted from the Lab test area to an official sport, with real-world foul tracking replacing an honor system; table tennis (singles and doubles) added to the Lab; a redesigned club; the Racket Club Shop for cosmetics bought with coins earned from daily and weekly challenges[5][15][16] |
Announcing the A New Spin update, Resolution Games said more than 370,000 matches had been played since launch.[12] Castelli said that when the studio made "a new racket sport that's only played with natural movements", it expected skilled players to want to experiment with the rules.[12] With the 2025 update the studio said the game's content had "quadrupled" since launch.[15] The game's official page, which gives no date, says the studio has released a body movement upgrade for Meta Quest avatars and increased resolution on Quest 3.[17]
Reception
Metacritic lists three critic reviews for the game, too few for a Metascore: Digital Chumps (90), UploadVR (80) and COGconnected (68).[18]
UploadVR gave the Quest 3 version 4 out of 5 stars. Reviewer Henry Stockdale said its mix of tennis, squash and pickleball felt suited to VR and that the controls were responsive, and he liked the rally scoring and the social club. He criticized the limited solo content and said the mixed reality mode did not blend well with the cel-shaded art style.[7] MIXED did not give a score. Its review praised the ball physics and short, intense matches and called the mixed reality mode "a game changer" for spatial awareness, but noted the space the game needs and the practice required to master it.[8] Digital Chumps scored the Quest 3 version 9 out of 10. Its only notable complaint was occasional twisted animations on CPU opponents.[19]
