Xreal Aura (stylized XREAL AURA) is a pair of tethered optical see-through augmented reality glasses developed by Xreal that run Google's Android XR platform. The glasses connect by cable to a pocket-sized compute puck that holds the main processor and battery. Google, Xreal and Qualcomm first showed the device as Project Aura at Google I/O in May 2025, and Xreal announced the final name, specifications and a reservation program at Augmented World Expo on 16 June 2026.[6][2]

On 7 October 2026 Xreal priced the glasses at US$1,279 with 12 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage, or US$1,499 with 16 GB and 512 GB, and opened pre-orders to customers who had already paid a reservation deposit, saying that orders from the general public would open "in the coming weeks". Xreal said at the time that shipping would begin before the holidays in the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea, with more markets to follow in 2027.[5][7][8]

Xreal launched XREAL AURA on 28 October 2026 at Google's Android Developer Summit and opened orders to the general public, with a limited-time launch offer of US$1,099 and US$1,299 for the two configurations through December 2026.[9] Xreal said orders opened that day in the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea, while Google's announcement gave 2 November as the start of orders in Japan.[10] As of 29 October 2026 the glasses have not shipped; Xreal expects shipping to begin in mid-November 2026.[11]

The glasses have two Sony Micro-OLED displays with 1920 x 1200 pixels per eye, a 70 degree field of view and an Xreal X1S coprocessor, while the puck runs Android XR on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite platform. Gemini is built into the system as the assistant.[1] Google describes it as Xreal's first wired XR glasses and as the first Android XR device in that category.[12][13]

Announcement and release

Project Aura (2025)

Xreal announced Project Aura on 20 May 2025 during Google I/O, describing it as the second official device for Android XR after Samsung's headset (later released as the Samsung Galaxy XR) and the first optical see-through device on the platform. The announcement named Google and Qualcomm as partners and promised more details at Augmented World Expo in June 2025.[6]

At Augmented World Expo in June 2025, Xreal confirmed that the glasses only work wired to a pocket-sized puck that contains the Android XR hardware; a smartphone cannot substitute for the puck. The company also confirmed a 70 degree field of view, a new flat prism lens, and an X1S chip derived from the X1 chip in the Xreal One and Xreal One Pro.[14]

Google and Xreal showed the first footage of Project Aura in use at The Android Show: XR Edition on 8 December 2025. Google's Shahram Izadi wrote that the wired glasses have a 70 degree field of view, the largest optical see-through display Xreal had built, and that launch details would follow in 2026.[12] Xreal's own post said the puck also works as a trackpad and that developer kits would ship in 2026.[15] UploadVR reported that most Galaxy XR apps would run on the puck, but that features relying on face tracking would not, because the glasses have no face-tracking cameras.[16] Google's Android XR SDK Developer Preview 3, released the same day, added field-of-view detection APIs for adaptive interfaces on headsets and wired XR glasses.[17]

Partnership extension (January 2026)

In January 2026 Google announced a multiyear extension of its partnership with Xreal; Road to VR described the move as positioning Xreal as a lead hardware partner for the Android XR ecosystem. Road to VR also reported that the two companies would work on bringing Android XR to optical see-through devices such as wired XR glasses, and that Project Aura was then due to ship during 2026 without a set date.[18]

Google I/O 2026 and developer program

At Google I/O on 19 May 2026, Google and Xreal demonstrated Project Aura running an immersive version of Google Maps, video on a large virtual screen with smaller side screens, 180 and 360 degree YouTube video, a WebXR painting app, and DisplayPort input from a laptop with Gemini support and what Xreal calls autospatialization, its conversion of flat content into 3D. They also announced the Android XR Developer Catalyst Program, which supplies Project Aura developer kits, the Android XR SDK and new APIs to selected developers who apply at g.co/dev/catalyst.[19][20] Xreal confirmed that the glasses would go on sale before the end of 2026.[21] The first developer cohort was limited in size, with kits shipping in summer 2026.[22] Xreal's product page later stated that Catalyst applications for XREAL AURA closed on 30 June 2026 and that approved developers receive a free device.[1]

XREAL AURA launch announcement (June 2026)

On 16 June 2026, at Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, California, Xreal renamed the product XREAL AURA, confirmed a fall 2026 launch and opened reservations. The press release named Best Buy as the first in-store retail partner in the United States and listed the first launch wave as the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada and South Korea, with 27 European markets (the European Union member states) to follow. Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon Reality Elite platform the same day and Xreal confirmed it as the puck's processor.[2][3] Google's own AWE post announced that reservations were open and offered demonstrations of the Galaxy XR and XREAL AURA at the Qualcomm booth.[13]

Xreal did not announce a price in June. Its reservation page stated that the final retail price of the base model would not exceed US$1,500, excluding applicable taxes, and that final pricing, configurations and shipping details would be announced closer to launch. The reservation was not a pre-order and was fully refundable before final purchase confirmation.[1][23]

Reservation tier Deposit (US$) Terms Status
Founder Priority Pass $299 Limited to 2,000 worldwide; guaranteed launch-day delivery in supported launch regions; laser-engraved, individually numbered special-edition hardware; deposit applied to the final purchase Sold out; Xreal states all 2,000 were reserved in 36 hours
Launch Credit $99 $199 credit toward the purchase at launch; earlier reservations get earlier access Sold out (reported 20 August 2026)[24]
Priority Deposit $199 Applied toward the purchase at launch; fully refundable before final checkout No longer on sale as of 28 October 2026[11][25]

The reservation tiers and their original terms are listed on Xreal's product page and store.[1][26] Engadget reported that the $99 Launch Credit was offered for a two-week window.[27] Xreal's store terms for the Priority Deposit say the reservation period opened on 16 June and that earlier reservations ship first.[28] In mid-October the deposit listing still sold the $199 deposit as a code applied to the final purchase, refundable at any time before final checkout.[25]

On 20 August 2026 Xreal said reservations had passed 10,000 units worldwide and that the $99 Launch Credit offer had sold out. Road to VR noted at the time that the final price was still unknown, which could affect some of the refundable reservations.[24] In a statement reported by Android Central, Xreal co-founder and chief executive Chi Xu called the milestone "an exciting signal of demand across consumers, developers, and enterprise partners".[29]

Later showings

Xreal showed XREAL AURA at MWC Shanghai in late June 2026, again stating a fall 2026 launch and the US$1,500 ceiling.[30] At the Venice International Film Festival in September 2026, Nevatars, a mixed reality piece directed by Andy Serkis and developed with Google's immersive production unit 100 Zeroes, was one of two Aura-supported projects shown in the Venice Immersive section; Variety reported that it had been selected in April 2026 as one of the first titles to launch on the glasses.[31] Xreal also demonstrated the glasses at IFA in Berlin in September 2026, where Android Authority was told the launch would come before the end of 2026 and that the price remained under US$1,500.[32] CGMagazine tried the glasses at Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit in September 2026, in demonstrations that included moving through MRI and brain scans in 3D, games and a laptop workflow.[33]

Pricing and pre-orders (October 2026)

Xreal announced final pricing on 7 October 2026. Pre-orders opened the same day, but only for customers who had reserved before 7 October; the press release said orders would open to the general public "in the coming weeks", that general availability orders would be taken at launch, and that new customers could still place a deposit for priority delivery. Chi Xu said in the release that customers "will be able to experience it this year". Buyers choose an M (60-66 mm) or L (66-72 mm) frame and one of two puck configurations.[5] Xreal's US store lists both frame sizes at the same price for each configuration.[8]

Market 12 GB RAM / 256 GB storage 16 GB RAM / 512 GB storage
United States US$1,279 US$1,499
Canada C$1,829 C$2,149
Japan 229,800 yen 269,800 yen
South Korea 1,990,000 won 2,290,000 won

The regional prices come from Xreal's 7 October press release.[5] MoguLive reported the 229,800 yen price of the 12 GB model as including tax.[34] AV Watch and Keitai Watch reported the same prices and said shipping in Japan was planned within 2026.[35][36] 9to5Google noted that the base price was well below the US$1,500 ceiling Xreal had promised in June.[37]

In mid-October, Xreal's US store set out the shipping order as follows. Holders of a Founder Priority Pass, Launch Credit or Priority Deposit qualified for priority shipping if they chose a model and paid the balance by 31 October 2026, with Founder Priority Pass orders shipped first and Launch Credit and Priority Deposit orders second (the store moved this deadline to 28 October at launch; see below). Founder Priority Pass holders who paid by 17 October 2026 were to receive a limited edition unit with a unique serial number. Xreal said the $299 pass guaranteed shipment on the official launch day and the $99 and $199 passes guaranteed shipment in the second fulfilment wave; priority referred to the dispatch order, not a delivery date. Passes whose purchase is not completed by 28 April 2027 are cancelled and refunded automatically.[8] Founder Priority Pass holders who paid between 18 and 31 October were to keep priority shipping but not the limited edition, and payments made after 31 October were to receive neither benefit. The configuration cannot be changed once it is confirmed, cancelled pre-orders are refunded within 5-10 business days, and the listing carries a one-year warranty and a 30-day return period.[7][38] Android Central also reported the 17 October deadline for the numbered Founder's Edition.[39] In Japan, Keitai Watch reported that buyers who purchased a pass after 7 October could pay the balance from 31 October.[36]

Launch (October 2026)

Xreal launched XREAL AURA on 28 October 2026, announcing it on stage at Google's Android Developer Summit. Its press release said customers in the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea could order the glasses from Xreal's website, and US customers also from BestBuy.com, and that shipping was expected to begin in mid-November. The release introduced a limited-time launch offer valid through December 2026; according to Xreal it applies in all launch markets to standalone purchases, not to bundles, with local promotional pricing to be listed on its regional websites.[9] Google's announcement, written by Shahram Izadi, gave a more specific schedule: orders opened on 28 October in the United States, Canada and Korea, and orders in Japan were to start on 2 November. Google also said buyers must be 18 or older.[10] MoguLive gave 2 November as the Japanese release date and Keitai Watch gave it as the date Japanese orders open, both with prices of 229,800 yen and 269,800 yen for the two configurations.[40][41] MoguLive added on 29 October that a Japanese limited-time price had not been announced and that the Japanese Xreal site still showed the pre-order prices.[40] Road to VR reported that wider retail availability is planned for 2027, including select Google Store locations in the United States and Japan.[42]

Configuration (United States) List price Launch offer (through December 2026)
12 GB RAM / 256 GB storage US$1,279 US$1,099
16 GB RAM / 512 GB storage US$1,499 US$1,299

The US prices come from Xreal's 28 October press release.[9] Xreal's US store says that customers who placed and fully paid for an order at the original price before 28 October remain eligible for the launch offer, and that it expects to begin refunding the price difference within 30 days, to the original payment method.[11][43] In the store terms as captured on 28 October, holders of a Founder Priority Pass, Launch Credit or Priority Deposit qualify for priority shipping if they choose a configuration and pay the remaining balance by 28 October 2026; earlier versions of the terms gave 31 October.[11][38] The store's FAQ lists three shipping groups: Founder Edition orders paid in full before 18 October ship first; Standard Edition orders from Founder Priority Pass holders paid from 18 October to before 28 October, and $99 or $199 pass orders paid before 28 October, ship second; all other orders follow in the order in which full payment is received. Priority status does not guarantee a place in the first shipment batch or a delivery date. According to the same listing, the $199 pass was no longer sold from 28 October, its holders could pay the balance from 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time that day with the launch offer applied, and all reservation passes remain valid until 28 April 2027. Each customer may buy up to two units, and the glasses can be returned within 30 days of delivery.[11]

Xreal also announced two accessories at the launch: a game controller designed with GameSir that has a dedicated Gemini key, and a wireless portable keyboard.[9] Road to VR listed them at US$99 and US$79 from Xreal and wrote that the controller comes with a charging dock, a replaceable d-pad with two spare pieces and a wireless USB-A dongle.[42] Xreal's US store also sells the glasses in bundles with the keyboard (from US$1,178 at the launch price), the controller (from US$1,198) or both (from US$1,277).[11] 9to5Google's Nicholas Sutrich, who used the controller, wrote that it is not spatially tracked.[44]

Current status

As of 29 October 2026 XREAL AURA is on sale but has not shipped. Xreal's US store lists the glasses at the launch-offer prices and says shipping is expected to begin in batches in mid-November 2026 in the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea, with launch and shipping dates for other regions still to be confirmed; the listing also states that price, delivery and final product specifications are to be confirmed.[11] The 7 October press release had said that more markets would follow in 2027.[5] The United Kingdom, listed in the first launch wave in June, is not among the four launch markets.[2][9] CGMagazine wrote on 7 October that customers in the four first-wave markets should receive their units in mid-November, a date that Xreal's release, store and product page did not give at that time; Xreal's 28 October release gave mid-November as the expected start of shipping.[33][7][9] MIXED reported that, as of 14 October, every memory and size variant on the US store read "Variant sold out or unavailable" to a visitor who was not signed in.[38] In mid-October the FAQ on Xreal's product page still described the offer as a reservation rather than a pre-order and repeated the US$1,500 price ceiling, although the same page showed the US$1,279 and US$1,499 prices.[38][45] As of 29 October the product page has an "Order Now" button linking to the US store.[46]

Design and hardware

XREAL AURA is a split-compute system. The glasses carry the displays, optics, cameras, speakers and the X1S coprocessor, which Xreal says handles low-latency spatial display, sensor processing and stable tracking. The main processor, memory, storage and battery sit in the separate puck, which Xreal says balances performance, heat, battery life and wearability.[1] The puck can be carried with a pocket clip or a lanyard clip.[5] Antony Vitillo of The Ghost Howls described it as weighing about 300 g and heavier than it looks.[47] Xreal's specification sheet lists the puck's weight as 265 g and its cooling as an active fan system.[46] Xreal gives the weight of the glasses as less than 95 g in its press releases and as 95 g in its specification sheet; it rates the X1S coprocessor at 3 ms motion-to-photon latency.[2][4] The frame styling resembles the Xreal One Pro, according to Engadget, but the glasses add three cameras: two on the sides for tracking and hand tracking and one in the center for photos and video.[48][49] Xreal's specification sheet lists two world-facing tracking cameras for 6DoF spatial anchoring and hand tracking, plus a high-resolution camera with a privacy LED indicator.[1]

The glasses come in two frame sizes: M for interpupillary distances of 60-66 mm and L for 66-72 mm. Prescription lens inserts are supported. Audio comes from built-in speakers with Bose EQ tuning, spatial audio handled by Android XR, and a four-microphone array.[1]

The puck runs Android XR on the Snapdragon Reality Elite platform. Qualcomm's stated figures for the platform, relative to the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, are up to 60 percent higher GPU performance, 30 percent higher CPU performance, 160 percent higher NPU performance (48 TOPS), 20 percent longer battery life at the same workload and up to 12 degrees Celsius cooler operation under load. XREAL AURA and a future Play For Dream headset were the first announced devices to use it.[50][23] The puck has a fingerprint button that powers the system on and off, locks and unlocks it, and handles biometric authentication and payment authorization in supported apps. It also has a touchpad and two USB-C ports: one connects the glasses (USB 3.1, 5 V at 2 A maximum, with full ADB support) and the other handles charging and DisplayPort input. Xreal's October 2026 specification sheet rates charging at 5-19 V and 3 A (57 W maximum), with QC 3.0 and PD 3.0 with PPS. Storage is UFS 4.0, and the puck supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, BeiDou and Wi-Fi positioning as well as Bluetooth keyboards, mice and game controllers.[4][46]

According to Xreal, the box contains the glasses, the puck, a glasses cable, a charging cable, a carrying case, a belt clip, three pairs of nose pads (S, M and L), an optical insert frame, a cleaning cloth and documentation; a lanyard is included only with the 16 GB model.[4]

Display and optics

Each eye has a Sony Micro-OLED panel with 1920 x 1200 pixels driven at up to 120 Hz, behind Xreal's X Prism optics. The 70 degree field of view is the widest Xreal has offered; the Xreal One Pro has a 57 degree field of view.[1][49] The figure is a diagonal measurement.[16] Xreal lists a maximum brightness of 1,050 nits, full sRGB coverage and 32 pixels per degree; these are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements.[4] Xreal says the glasses received five TÜV Rheinland certifications: Eye Comfort (5 Star), High Visibility, Low Blue Light, Flicker Free and Color Accuracy.[9]

The optics are a prism, or birdbath-type, see-through design rather than a waveguide. UploadVR noted that this approach is bulkier than the waveguides in Meta's and Apple's glasses prototypes, sits farther from the eyes and blocks most ambient light.[16] Electrochromic dimming in the lenses adjusts transparency across five levels, automatically or manually, so the same glasses can be used for opaque, cinema-style viewing or with the surroundings visible.[1] Xreal says the dimming blocks up to 99.9 percent of external light.[4] Because the display is optical see-through, the real world is seen directly through the lenses rather than through a camera feed.[51]

In his December 2025 hands-on, Road to VR's Ben Lang wrote that Google's software can set the dimming automatically: an immersive application can switch it to 100 percent, and a media app can request 50 percent. Google told him that developers do not need to handle the difference between this physical dimming and the digital dimming used on passthrough headsets, because Android XR applies whichever method the device supports.[52]

Software and features

The puck runs Android XR, so the glasses can install Android apps from Google Play as well as apps built for Android XR. Xreal states that Google Maps, YouTube, Gemini, Chrome and Google Photos are available at launch.[1] In June 2026 Xreal said more than one hundred apps made for XR were in development; its October 2026 product page lists more than 150.[2][4] Gemini on Android XR is the built-in assistant; with user permission it can use the cameras and microphones to answer questions about what the wearer sees, open apps and navigate the interface by voice.[1] Input is by hands, voice and the puck's touchpad. Xreal's specification sheet lists hand tracking and 6DoF tracking but no eye tracking; Tech Times reported that the hardware has none and that pointing relies on hand gestures.[1][30] Without eye tracking, Ben Lang could not use the look-and-pinch input he preferred on the Galaxy XR and had to use the default laser-pointer style.[52]

The DisplayPort input on the puck lets the glasses act as an external display for a PC, laptop or handheld console. At Google I/O 2026 the laptop mode was shown with Gemini integration and autospatialization.[1][19] GSMArena reported that the system can keep up to five floating app windows open at once.[53] Xreal's product page also describes up to five virtual screens, a Wired Mirroring mode for a PC, a travel mode intended to keep the view steady in flight, conversion of existing photos and videos into 3D in Google Photos, and the option to share on-screen content with Gemini to ask questions about it.[4]

Xreal's June 2026 announcement listed XR titles in development for the device, including Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, Fallout: Factions, The Nutcracker: A Spatial Awakening, Asteroid, Demeo, Fox Sports XR, Cubism, Oh My Galaxy!, Chess Club, CHZZK, Robo Repair, Tiny Motors Arcade, Table Towers, Simply Piano XR, ShapesXR, Frontline.io and Plynk Spatial.[2][51]

Xreal's 28 October release said the glasses launch with more than 150 made-for-XR experiences and highlighted, among others, the NBA App for Android XR, Nevatars (exclusive to Android XR at launch and free for its first six months, according to Xreal), the NASCAR XR App, the San Francisco Ballet's The Nutcracker, Atlantic Studios' Galapagos, Asteroid (free for XREAL AURA owners), Soapbox and apoQlar's XR HoloMedicine.[9] Google's launch post said that games from studios such as Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games are available and that Fallout: Factions and Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars are coming. It also said that, starting with the launch, Gemini can highlight what to focus on when the wearer shares their view, and that a spatial gallery for Google Photos was planned for later in 2026.[10]

Developer support

Google's Android XR documentation treats XREAL AURA's category, wired XR glasses, as a separate device type from headsets. It describes these glasses as using additive displays on semi-transparent lenses, so that pure black renders as transparent, with a field of view "typically between 50° and 70°" that the system's UI scaling accounts for, and with input that relies mainly on hands and peripherals such as phones and Bluetooth keyboards or mice rather than dedicated controllers. The same page lists the Jetpack XR SDK, Unity, OpenXR and WebXR as development options for both headsets and wired XR glasses.[54]

Hardware for developers came through the Android XR Developer Catalyst Program. Google's program page lists applications open from 19 May to 30 June 2026, with decisions sent no later than 15 July 2026. Selected developers could get early hardware development kits for wired XR glasses ("XREAL's Project Aura"), audio glasses or display glasses, technical resources and support for preparing apps for Google Play, and could request a non-recoupable grant paid out against development milestones. The program invited developers planning to publish Android XR apps within 6-12 months, and development kits could be shipped only to developers in the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the European Union. For wired XR glasses the page lists the Jetpack XR SDK with Android Studio, the XR Blocks SDK, Unity, Godot and Unreal Engine as supported tools.[55]

Unity announced support for XREAL AURA on 16 June 2026, calling it Unity's first support for XR glasses rather than headsets. It recommended Unity 6.5 with its Android XR build profile, the OpenXR: Android XR package and recent versions of the XR Interaction Toolkit, XR Hands and AR Foundation, plus a new Spatial Entities package for plane detection, anchors, marker tracking and persistent spatial state. Unity noted that Android XR is built on OpenXR and Vulkan, and told developers to plan for hands-first interaction, the puck's trackpad (which maps to Unity's input system), the optical see-through display, a field of view smaller than a headset's and the absence of eye tracking. Its post also said developers can read and set the dimming level in the same way across Android XR devices, that Application SpaceWarp is enabled by default for UI shaders on Android XR, and that one APK can target both the Galaxy XR and XREAL AURA.[56]

Comparison with Xreal One Pro

Like the Xreal One Pro, XREAL AURA uses X Prism optics and Sony Micro-OLED displays, but it adds its own Android XR computer and world-facing cameras. The One Pro is a pair of display glasses that needs a host device with DisplayPort output over USB-C.[57]

Reception

As of 29 October 2026 coverage is based on demonstrations of pre-release hardware; retail units have not shipped and no full reviews have been published. In its 28 October launch report, Road to VR said it had not yet had an opportunity for a full review.[42]

Ben Lang of Road to VR tried the glasses in late 2025. He found the display sharp and bright for virtual screens and described the device as the first clear look at a convergence of AR and VR headsets in a compact form. He also saw obvious pupil swim, a warping of the image during head movement, and noted that even with dimming at 0 percent the lenses made the real world look as dim as sunglasses worn indoors.[52]

Trying Project Aura at Google I/O 2026, Engadget's Karissa Bell found the 70 degree display sharp and bright even in outdoor sunlight, wide enough for video and web browsing, and reported that the glasses detected her hands reliably for pinch gestures. She noted that the puck grew warm during a roughly 20 minute demo held outdoors in heat of almost 90 degrees Fahrenheit.[48] At the June 2026 announcement she described the device as a middle ground between a bulky headset and true glasses.[27]

Antony Vitillo, writing on his blog The Ghost Howls after trying the glasses at AWE 2026, found the 1920 x 1200 displays sharp enough to edit text in Google Docs, praised the electrochromic dimming, and rated the hand tracking stable but laggy for fast interaction. His main criticism was the vertical field of view, which he found limiting; he also noticed slight warping of the image during sideways head movement and some pressure on the nose and ears after 30 minutes.[47] He found positional tracking solid overall but had moments when tracking was lost and virtual elements moved around him. The hand-tracking lag made the glasses unsuitable in his view for fast games such as Beat Saber, and hands resting at his sides were not tracked because the glasses have no downward-facing cameras.[47]

Android Authority's Adamya Sharma, after an IFA 2026 demo, called the immersive Google Maps demo the strongest use case and did not find the tether distracting, but noted that the standalone YouTube app crashed during the demo (the site worked through Chrome) and that app support for launch remained unclear.[32]

CGMagazine's Dayna Eileen, after the Snapdragon Summit demonstration, wrote that she did not feel sick in the glasses although she usually does in VR headsets, and that she needed more time with the device to judge it in real-world use.[33]

Writing at the launch, 9to5Google's Nicholas Sutrich said he had used a near-final unit the previous month and "was incredibly impressed" by the full Android XR experience, including 6DoF tracking, hand tracking and controller support.[44] In a launch news article, Android Police's Timi Cantisano wrote that the two-part design, with the computing hardware and battery in the puck, "keeps them light and comfortable", and that the device "won't be for everyone".[58]
