The Xreal X1 (styled XREAL X1) is a spatial computing coprocessor that Xreal designed in-house for its tethered AR glasses. Xreal introduced it on December 4, 2024, with the Xreal One and Xreal One Pro, and called it its first silicon chip.[1] The chip sits inside the glasses and processes head tracking there, so the glasses can hold a virtual screen in place with native 3DoF tracking on nearly any connected source device. Earlier Xreal glasses needed the Xreal Beam or Beam Pro adapter, a PC, or one of a few supported Android phones for that function.[2] Xreal rates the X1 at about 3 ms motion-to-photon latency at 120Hz.[1]
The X1 is used in Xreal's One series display glasses, including the Xreal 1S and Xreal 1 Pro+, and in the ROG Xreal R1 gaming glasses, a product of Xreal's partnership with ASUS Republic of Gamers. A modified version, the X1S (marketed as the XREAL X1S Spatial Coprocessor), is the glasses-side chip of the Xreal Aura, which pairs it with a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite processor in a tethered compute puck.[3][4]
History
Development
Xreal chief executive Chi Xu told 36Kr that general-purpose chips did not meet the needs of AR glasses in latency, power efficiency and spatial computing optimization, and that Xreal put part of its 2021 Series C funding into developing the X1.[5] Reported development times differ. The December 2024 press release said the chip was "the result of over three years of cutting-edge research and development",[1] and Xu told CNBC it had been in the works for three years.[6] At the Japanese launch a week later, TechnoEdge reported a development period of more than two and a half years.[7]
In September 2024, before any product using the chip had been announced, Windows Central reported that Xreal had posted a photo of a tray of chips labeled "XREAL X1" on its official subreddit, and that a member of the Xreal team wrote that the company had been working on its new chip and product "for over two years".[8]
Announcement with the One series
Xreal announced the X1 with the Xreal One and One Pro on December 4, 2024. The press release called it "XREAL's first silicon chip" and described it as an "in-house designed X1 independent spatial computing co-processor" built into the glasses. Xreal also called it "the first of its kind for any optical see through (OST) AR glasses", a company claim.[1] Pre-orders opened that day at US$499 for the One and US$599 for the One Pro. Xreal expected the One to ship in mid-December 2024 and the One Pro in early 2025.[1] In the release, Xu said: "With the X1 chip, we're introducing our biggest innovation since pioneering lightweight, portable, tethered AR glasses."[1] He told CNBC: "We have to step up to define a chip that is really defining some of the new features for these types of glasses."[6] 36Kr reported that the chip had entered mass production after three years of research and development.[5]
Later products
Later products and accessories built on the X1 include:
- The Xreal Eye camera module, described as an upcoming add-on in December 2024,[9] went on pre-order on Xreal.com on June 18, 2025. It adds 6DoF screen anchoring to the One and One Pro, and Xreal said it would later enable gesture control and other features.[10]
- The Xreal 1S launched on January 4, 2026. Xreal's release said it is "Powered by the award-winning XREAL X1 spatial computing chip".[11]
- The ROG Xreal R1, announced with ASUS Republic of Gamers at CES on January 5, 2026, uses the X1 for its 3DoF modes; Xreal gives it a 3 ms motion-to-photon latency as well.[12] Pre-orders opened in May 2026.[13]
- The Xreal 1 Pro+, a One Pro refresh, went on sale on October 15, 2026, at US$599 and keeps the X1.[14]
Not every current Xreal product uses the chip. In a July 2026 comparison, 9to5Google listed the X1 as the display chip of the Xreal 1S and a Pixelworks chip for the lower-priced Xreal xbx a01+, which has no head tracking (0DoF).[15]
Award
In April 2025, China Daily and Jiemian reported that the X1 had won a gold award at the 2025 Edison Awards. Jiemian placed it in the "entertainment and design experience" category.[16][17]
Features
Head tracking and latency
TechnoEdge described the architecture that the X1 replaced. In earlier Xreal glasses, orientation data from the glasses' sensors went through a microcontroller to the CPU of the host device, such as a phone, whose GPU adjusted the picture before sending it back to the glasses. That round trip added latency. Xreal said typical AR glasses have a display latency of about 15 to 20 ms, and that the One reaches 3 ms because the X1 processes the sensor data itself.[7] The English press release gives "~3ms at 120Hz" and compares it with "previous industry benchmarks of ~20ms".[1] Tom's Hardware reported that Xreal also compared the figure with the 12 ms of the Apple Vision Pro.[18] These are Xreal's figures, not independent measurements.
With the X1, the glasses support two screen modes without help from the source device. In Anchor mode the virtual screen stays fixed when the wearer turns their head; in Follow mode it moves with the head.[9] MIXED reported that the chip makes 3DoF tracking possible with any connected device, including phones, laptops, handhelds and game consoles.[19] Xreal's product page for the ROG Xreal R1 says its X1 "enables 3DoF functionality directly on the glasses", so Anchor mode can be switched on from the glasses themselves.[20]
In a February 2026 company blog post, Xu said stable, drift-free 3DoF tracking is hard to achieve without specialized hardware. Xreal also wrote that every device goes through sensor-level calibration at the factory to reduce drift.[21]
On-glasses settings
According to Tom's Hardware, much of the configuration that earlier Xreal glasses handled through a separate app runs on the One itself because of the X1. Its reviewer opened the menu with a double tap on a button on the glasses and changed the virtual screen size from 147 inches to 191 inches, along with the viewing distance, while working in macOS.[9] The ROG Xreal R1 also lets the wearer resize the virtual screen and move it nearer or farther with a button press, which Xreal attributes to the X1.[12]
6DoF with Xreal Eye
The X1 by itself provides rotational (3DoF) tracking. The Xreal Eye adds a camera to the One series glasses, and Keitai Watch reported that the X1 fuses the camera image with data from the inertial measurement unit to measure depth and produce 6DoF tracking. Keitai Watch noted that it does not work in some conditions, such as darkness or a moving background.[22] Xreal's product page for the 1 Pro+ also lists 6DoF spatial anchoring as requiring the separately sold Xreal Eye.[23]
Neural processing unit and Real 3D
The X1 includes a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for running AI workloads on the glasses, according to Xreal.[21] One feature built on it is Real 3D, a 2D-to-3D conversion feature that Xreal says needs no apps or special software, has no DRM restrictions and no proprietary players.[11] Xreal lists photos, videos, livestreams and games among the content it converts.[23] Xreal told Road to VR that the NPU runs depth estimation inference on every incoming frame and generates the matching left- and right-eye views. The company said it had trained "a highly compact model" for the X1's power budget, that the feature draws around 300 mW more than other display modes, and that it was still investigating Real 3D's latency.[24]
Xreal introduced Real 3D with the Xreal 1S on January 4, 2026; its release said the feature was available on the 1S and, through an update, on the One Pro.[11] On January 30, 2026, Road to VR reported an update that brought it to the One and One Pro.[24] Xreal's February 2026 blog post called the release version 1.0 and said the company was testing 60Hz support.[21] The 1 Pro+ product page lists Real 3D at 60 fps.[23] According to CGMagazine, the ROG Xreal R1 also offers real-time 2D-to-3D conversion.[13]
Variants
X1S
The X1S is a newer model in Xreal's X1 chip series. Xreal announced it at AWE USA 2025 in June 2025 as part of Project Aura, the device later named Xreal Aura. MoguLive reported Xreal's statement that the X1S has 25% more processing performance than the X1 in the Xreal One and is optimized for multitasking.[25] 9to5Google described it as a modified version of the chip in the One and One Pro, used alongside a Snapdragon chip.[3]
Unlike the X1 products, the Aura uses a split-compute design. Writing on Xreal's blog in December 2025, Xu said the device pairs Xreal hardware, "utilizing our X1S spatial computing chip", with Google's Android XR.[26] Xreal's June 16, 2026 press release described a "dual-chip, split-compute architecture". In it, the X1S inside the frames "supports low-latency spatial display, sensor processing" and stable glasses-based XR, while the Snapdragon Reality Elite runs in the separate compute unit.[27] UploadVR reported that the X1S handles core computer vision tasks in the glasses, so camera data does not have to be sent to the puck, which would need a large amount of bandwidth.[28] Android Central wrote in May 2026 that the X1S works with the glasses' cameras to track the wearer's position.[29]
The Aura product page lists the "X1S Spatial Coprocessor" with a motion-to-photon latency of 3 ms, and says it delivers "ultra-low-latency positional tracking at just 3 ms while handling always-on AI visual processing". The glasses have two world-facing tracking cameras for 6DoF spatial anchoring and hand tracking.[4] On October 7, 2026, Xreal priced the Aura from US$1,279. It opened pre-orders to customers who had already paid a reservation deposit and said shipping would begin soon in the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea.[30] Xreal opened orders to the general public in those four countries on October 28, 2026, with a limited-time price of US$1,099 for the 12GB + 256GB configuration and US$1,299 for the 16GB + 512GB configuration, and said shipments were expected to begin in mid-November 2026.[31] The release lists the "XREAL X1S Chip" among the Aura's features.[31]

Reception
CNBC called the X1 the company's first self-designed processor for its glasses and noted that the earlier generation had needed the Beam companion device to connect to devices.[6] Laptop Mag contrasted it with companies such as Meta and Lenovo that use Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR platform.[32]
In its December 2024 review of the Xreal One, Tom's Hardware listed the X1 as a positive and wrote that Follow mode, which lagged on the Xreal Air 2, had almost no lag on the One. The reviewer added that the chip's processing power "is no match for dedicated mixed reality headsets" such as the Meta Quest 3, since the glasses still need a host device to run games and apps.[9] In a June 2025 Xreal press release, Avi Greengart of the research firm Techsponential said the "custom X1 silicon allows the One Pro's virtual display to stay anchored in space".[10]
