Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is a system on a chip and reference platform built by Qualcomm for premium standalone extended reality (XR) headsets. Qualcomm announced it on January 4, 2024, ahead of CES 2024, positioning it as a higher-performance variant of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 that powers the Meta Quest 3.[1][2]

The headline feature is display output: the platform drives up to 4.3K (about 4,300 x 4,300) resolution per eye at 90 frames per second, against up to 3.1K per eye at 90 Hz on the standard XR2 Gen 2.[2][3] Qualcomm clocks the GPU 15% higher and the CPU 20% higher than the base part, and the platform handles 12 or more concurrent cameras for full-color video see-through and tracking.[2][4]

The first shipping device built on the platform is the Samsung Galaxy XR, released October 21, 2025; it was the launch headset for Google's Android XR operating system.[5]

Positioning

Qualcomm uses a "plus" tier within each XR generation for the most demanding headsets, sitting above the mainstream part of the same generation. The XR2+ Gen 2 is not a successor to the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2; it is a higher-end variant of that same generation, aimed at premium mixed reality devices rather than the mass-market price point the base chip targets.[1][3] Press coverage described the chip as enabling "beefier standalone headsets" and framed the resulting products as competitors to the Apple Vision Pro at lower prices.[1][6]

The naming has caused confusion with the earlier XR2+ Gen 1, a 2022 part that powered the Meta Quest Pro. The two are different generations: the Gen 1 plus chip built on the original Snapdragon XR2, while the Gen 2 plus chip builds on the 4nm XR2 Gen 2 with markedly higher display and camera ceilings.[1][3]

Technical details

The XR2+ Gen 2 shares the 4nm process node and the core architecture of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, which Qualcomm rates at up to 2.5x the GPU performance and up to 8x the AI performance per watt of the first-generation XR2.[7] Relative to that base part, the plus variant raises the GPU maximum frequency by 15% and the CPU maximum frequency by 20%, while keeping the same performance-per-watt characteristics, so peak power draw and heat rise with the higher clocks.[2][3]

On the display side, the platform supports a single-chip architecture that Qualcomm markets as "4.3K spatial computing": up to 4.3K per eye at 90 Hz.[2][8] Coverage at announcement also reported a 3.7K-per-eye mode at 120 Hz, against 2.7K per eye at 120 Hz on the base chip.[3][9]

The camera and sensor pipeline is the other change. The platform handles 12 or more concurrent cameras (up from 10 on the base XR2 Gen 2), feeding on-device tracking for hand, head, controller, and facial expression, plus depth estimation and 3D reconstruction.[2][4] An upgraded image signal processor supports full-color video see-through with around 12 milliseconds of latency, the same figure Qualcomm quotes for the base chip.[2][3] Wireless connectivity covers Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6E, alongside Bluetooth 5.3 and 5.2.[2] On-device perception runs 6 degrees of freedom inside-out tracking without external sensors, as on the shipping headsets built on the platform.[5]

Devices

At announcement Qualcomm named several companies designing hardware on the platform: Samsung (with Google), HTC Vive, Immersed, and Play for Dream (formerly YVR). Sony was added on January 8, 2024 as the maker of a fifth, then-undisclosed headset.[3][4] "Working on a device" and "shipping a device" are not the same thing, and the products arrived on different timelines. The entries below are the publicly confirmed XR2+ Gen 2 devices.

  • Samsung Galaxy XR (released October 21, 2025): Samsung's first XR headset and the launch device for Android XR. It pairs the XR2+ Gen 2 with dual Micro-OLED panels at 3,552 x 3,840 per eye, 16 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage, priced at 1,799 US dollars.[5][10]
  • Play For Dream MR: a standalone Android-based mixed reality headset from Play for Dream (formerly YVR) running the XR2+ Gen 2, with Micro-OLED displays at 3,840 x 3,552 per eye and a 90 Hz refresh rate, priced just under 2,000 US dollars with controllers. Shown at CES 2025, it was set to ship to crowdfunding backers in early 2025 ahead of a wider rollout.[11][12]
  • Immersed Visor: a compact PC-companion headset announced by Immersed on the XR2+ Gen 2 with Micro-OLED displays, color passthrough, and eye and hand tracking. The product slipped repeatedly from its original 2024 target; Immersed said mass production of the standard Visor would begin after summer 2025.[13]

Relationship to the rest of the Snapdragon XR line

The XR2+ Gen 2 is the top tier of Qualcomm's second-generation dedicated XR silicon. Below it, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 (announced September 2023) is the mainstream part used in the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S. Both descend from the original Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 (2019), which introduced the dedicated XR2 line, and from the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 (2018), Qualcomm's first chip built specifically for extended reality.[7][3]
