Pico 4 Ultra vs Meta Quest 3
More actions
Pico 4 Ultra vs Meta Quest 3 compares the Pico 4 Ultra, a standalone virtual and mixed reality headset from Pico, the XR subsidiary of ByteDance,[1] with the Meta Quest 3, a standalone virtual and mixed reality headset from Meta Platforms. Both use the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip; the Pico 4 Ultra pairs it with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, while Quest 3 has 8 GB of RAM and is currently sold with 512 GB.[2][3] Pico lists 2160 x 2160 pixels per eye at 90 Hz and a 105-degree field of view; Meta lists 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye at up to 120 Hz and 110 degrees horizontal by 96 degrees vertical.[2][3] The Pico 4 Ultra has two 32-megapixel passthrough cameras, Wi-Fi 7 and its battery at the back of the strap, and weighs about 580 g; Quest 3 has two 4-megapixel passthrough cameras, Wi-Fi 6E and its battery in the front visor, and weighs 515 g.[4][5][6][7][8] The two headsets run different software platforms, PICO OS and Meta Horizon OS, with separate app stores. The Pico 4 Ultra was launched in China, Europe and parts of Asia-Pacific; UploadVR reported in November 2024 that it was still not sold in North America.[9] As of October 2026, Meta's US store lists Quest 3 (512 GB) at US$599.99, a price in effect since 19 April 2026.[3][10]

Display and optics
On paper, the Pico 4 Ultra has slightly more pixels per eye (2160 x 2160 against 2064 x 2208), while Quest 3 has the higher stated angular resolution: Meta gives 25 pixels per degree, Pico 20.6 PPD on average and 22.5 PPD in the central area.[2][3] Pico renders by default at 1920 x 1920 per eye.[2] Both use LCD panels behind pancake lenses.[19][2][3] Quest 3 supports 72, 90 and 120 Hz in its consumer specification, and Meta's developer documentation adds rates above 120 Hz (144, 180, 200 and 207 Hz through standard APIs, and up to 240 Hz in developer mode with display scaling) on Horizon OS v2.7 or later.[3][25] Pico lists a single 90 Hz refresh rate.[2]
The field of view figures are not directly comparable: Pico gives a single 105-degree value, while Meta gives 110 degrees horizontal and 96 degrees vertical. UploadVR described the Pico 4 Ultra's field of view as 105 x 105 degrees.[7] In its hands-on, UploadVR wrote that Quest 3 has "a noticeably wider field of view, though Pico 4 Ultra's is taller".[26]
Two reviews that compared the headsets directly pointed to the lenses rather than the panel resolution. UploadVR wrote that the Pico 4 Ultra's lenses, carried over from the Pico 4, "don't come close to the sublime edge-to-edge clarity" of Quest 3's lenses.[26] In MIXED's review, Josef Erl reported that Quest 3 "offers excellent edge-to-edge clarity" and that the Pico's higher resolution made no significant difference in practice in a direct comparison.[24] UploadVR reported that the panels have 25% higher peak brightness than the Pico 4's.[26]
Quest 3 has continuous lens-spacing adjustment from 58 to 70 mm (UploadVR and Road to VR give a supported IPD range of 53-75 mm) and a built-in eye-relief adjustment that makes room for glasses.[5][20] The Pico 4 Ultra adjusts lens spacing steplessly from 58 to 72 mm, has no eye-relief adjustment and ships with a separate glasses spacer.[2][7]
Performance and hardware
Both headsets use the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, so the hardware difference is in memory and storage: 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage on the Pico 4 Ultra, against 8 GB of RAM on Quest 3.[2][4] The Pico 4 Ultra is sold in one 256 GB configuration. Quest 3 launched in 128 GB and 512 GB versions, and Meta's store now lists only the 512 GB model.[14][3]
In its comparison, TechRadar found that the extra RAM had not yet translated into a visible advantage: Quest 3 did not struggle with any VR or mixed reality app the reviewer tried, and TechRadar credited Horizon OS optimizations for keeping performance on a par.[19] Trusted Reviews, by contrast, listed "class-leading performance" among the Pico 4 Ultra's strengths.[21]
For wireless PC streaming, the Pico 4 Ultra supports Wi-Fi 7 and Quest 3 supports Wi-Fi 6E.[2][4] Pico states that with a Wi-Fi 7 router the headset can reach transmission speeds above 3.0 Gbps and wireless streaming latency as low as 5 ms, citing tests in its own lab.[6] Pico's free PC streaming app, PICO Connect, works wirelessly or over a compatible USB-C cable, and TechRadar's Pico 4 Ultra review found it "a little more feature rich and reliable" than Meta's Air Link in its testing.[27]
Tracking and input
Both headsets use inside-out tracking with no external base stations. The Pico 4 Ultra uses four environment tracking cameras; Quest 3 has four infrared tracking cameras alongside its two color cameras.[2][20] Both ship with ring-free controllers. Pico's controllers run on two AA batteries each, and Pico says they are about 60 mm tall, 50% shorter than the Pico 4's.[2][6] UploadVR described them as resembling Quest 3's Touch Plus controllers with a less curved handle.[7]
Both support controller-free hand tracking.[4][24] MIXED described the Pico 4 Ultra's hand tracking at launch as "imprecise and clumsy", unchanged from the Pico 4.[24] MIXED reported that Pico's OS 5.13.0 update, rolled out from March 2025, added a hand-tracking-only mode, and that Pico promised lower hand-tracking latency and more stable tracking in low light.[28]
Body tracking works differently on each headset. Pico sells PICO Motion Trackers, worn on the ankles and waist, for full-body tracking in compatible apps; Pico says each tracker weighs about 27 g and that full-body mode has a latency of about 20 ms.[6] At the European launch they cost GBP 79 or EUR 89 a pair outside preorder bundles, and in China they sold for 399 yuan a pair.[1][12] Meta's Inside-Out Body Tracking, exclusive to Quest 3, estimates upper-body movement from the headset cameras, and its Generative Legs feature predicts leg poses without extra sensors.[22] TechRadar called the Motion Trackers the Pico's most consequential exclusive feature and noted that Meta has no first-party equivalent for Quest 3.[19]
Mixed reality and passthrough
The Pico 4 Ultra uses two 32-megapixel color cameras and produces an 8 MP passthrough image; Pico gives 22.5 PPD at the center of the image.[6] UploadVR put its passthrough angular resolution at 20.6 PPD against Meta's figure of 18 PPD for Quest 3, which uses two 4 MP color cameras.[13][4] Both headsets have a depth sensor for room mapping: an indirect time-of-flight (iToF) camera on the Pico and a depth sensor on Quest 3.[2][4]
Comparisons published in September 2024 differed on the result. UploadVR found the Pico's passthrough slightly sharper, with "no double imaging and little-to-no distortion on moving objects such as your hands", but also found that the view skewed when turning the head and that the Pico lacked dynamic occlusion, so virtual objects always appeared in front of the user's hands and arms; it judged Quest 3 better on depth and perspective.[26] TechRadar found the Pico's passthrough a little more vibrant, with more noticeable distortion at the edges, and Quest 3's a little grainier; it gave the mixed reality category to the Pico 4 Ultra by a narrow margin.[19]
The Pico 4 Ultra can record spatial video at up to 2048 x 1536 pixels and 60 frames per second, and it plays spatial photos and videos from iPhone and Apple Vision Pro through hardware MV-HEVC decoding.[6] UploadVR's August 2024 comparison table listed spatial video capture as a Pico feature that Quest 3 lacked.[7] TechRadar described the Pico's spatial capture as a novelty, with image quality matching the passthrough.[19]
Software and content
Quest 3 runs Meta Horizon OS, built on Android 14 according to Meta's September 2026 device comparison, and uses the Meta Horizon Store.[4] The Pico 4 Ultra runs Pico's Android-based PICO OS with its own store.[19]
The software library is the difference reviewers stressed most. TechRadar wrote that Quest 3 "demolishes its rival" on software, citing Quest exclusives such as Beat Saber, Asgard's Wrath 2, Batman: Arkham Shadow and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and naming TikTok as Pico's only noteworthy exclusive.[19] MIXED wrote that Pico's store "is far from being able to keep up with the Meta Horizon Store".[24] Trusted Reviews said Meta "still has the edge" in high-profile and exclusive games.[21]
Pico has added system features through updates. OS 5.13.0 (March 2025) brought 2D-to-3D photo conversion, iPhone 16 spatial photo and video viewing, a per-app Performance Tuner for resolution, frame rate and CPU and GPU levels, and frame interpolation for PC streaming over PICO Connect. MIXED noted at the time that Quest offered no built-in equivalent of the photo conversion or per-app tuning.[28]
Comfort, weight and battery
The two designs place the battery differently. The Pico 4 Ultra keeps its battery in the rear of the strap as a counterweight: Pico gives 304 g for the front and 276 g for the rear, about 580 g in total.[6] Quest 3 keeps its battery in the visor and weighs 515 g.[7][8] UploadVR compared the Pico's 304 g visor with 397 g for Quest 3's and wrote that the Pico "felt comfortable from the moment I put it on".[26] MIXED's reviewer, by contrast, wrote that the Pico 4 Ultra "is not a very comfortable headset".[24] UploadVR noted that the Pico's semi-rigid strap is not replaceable, while Quest 3's cloth strap can be swapped.[7]
The Pico 4 Ultra has the larger battery: 5700 mAh rated (21.9 Wh) against 5,060 mAh (18.9 Wh) for Quest 3.[2][7][20] It supports 45 W charging; Meta lists 18 W as the charger requirement for Quest 3, and its help page gives about two and a half hours for a full charge of its headsets from a wall outlet with the included adapter.[2][23] Meta rates Quest 3 at 2.2 hours of use on average, less in mixed reality and demanding apps.[23] Pico does not publish a battery-life figure. In MIXED's test the Pico 4 Ultra lasted up to three hours of video playback and about an hour and a half with mixed reality apps and multitasking; Trusted Reviews got around four hours at best, which it described as an hour more than Quest 3.[24][21]
Quest 3 has a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The Pico 4 Ultra has none, so Bluetooth is its only option for external audio.[4][21]
Price and availability
Quest 3 went on sale on 10 October 2023 at US$499.99 (128 GB) and US$649.99 (512 GB), GBP 479.99 and GBP 619.99, and EUR 549.99 and EUR 699.99.[14][11][15] When Meta introduced the Meta Quest 3S in September 2024, it cut the 512 GB Quest 3 from US$649.99 to US$499.99.[15] On 16 April 2026 Meta announced price increases effective 19 April 2026, citing higher hardware costs and memory chip prices. The 512 GB Quest 3 rose to US$599.99, GBP 549.99 and EUR 619.99 (from EUR 550 in Germany), and in Japan to 102,300 yen including tax.[10][17][29][18]
The Pico 4 Ultra went on sale in China on 2 September 2024 at 4,299 yuan.[12] It launched on 20 September 2024 in Europe and Asia-Pacific; UploadVR listed the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, and Road to VR's list also included Poland. European prices were GBP 529 and EUR 599.[13][1] In Japan it had been sold at 89,800 yen; Pico raised that to 104,900 yen from 1 May 2026, citing exchange rates and higher component and logistics costs.[16] UploadVR reported at launch that ByteDance had no plans to sell it in North America, and in November 2024 that it was still not sold there.[13][9] At the UK launch, TechRadar noted that the Pico cost GBP 50 more than the 128 GB Quest 3 while offering 4 GB more RAM and 128 GB more storage.[19]

Reviews comparing the two
In its head-to-head comparison of September 2024, TechRadar scored value as a tie, gave specifications, mixed reality and features to the Pico 4 Ultra, and gave software to Quest 3. It concluded that "for the vast majority of people it'll be the Meta Quest 3", mainly because of Meta's library of exclusives and wider availability.[19]
MIXED's August 2024 specification comparison found the two "more or less equivalent, at least on paper", while noting Quest 3's lenses, 120 Hz refresh rate and software lead.[30] Its full review, titled "Quest 3 remains unmatched", said the Pico 4 Ultra was not a serious competitor to Quest 3, "which is worlds ahead in terms of hardware and software".[24]
Trusted Reviews took the opposite view on hardware, writing that the Pico 4 Ultra "does what it set out to do: out-perform its main rival, the Meta Quest 3", while Pico's software and game catalogue "remains second fiddle to Meta's".[21] UploadVR's hands-on preferred the Pico's comfort and passthrough but Quest 3's lenses, field of view width and depth handling.[26]
