PlayStation VR2 vs Meta Quest 3

vrarwiki.com · VR & AR Wiki

PlayStation VR2 vs Meta Quest 3 compares the PlayStation VR2, a tethered virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5 from Sony Interactive Entertainment, with the Meta Quest 3, a standalone virtual and mixed reality headset from Meta Platforms. PS VR2 has no processor of its own for games: it connects by a single USB-C cable to a PS5, or to a Windows PC through a separately sold adapter, while Quest 3 runs applications on its own Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip and battery.[1][2][3] PS VR2 uses OLED panels at 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye with Fresnel lenses and eye tracking; Quest 3 uses LCD panels at 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye with pancake lenses and has no eye tracking.[4][5][6] Quest 3 shows the room in full-color stereoscopic passthrough, while the passthrough view on PS VR2 is black and white.[3][7] As of October 2026, Sony's recommended price for PS VR2 is US$399.99, £399.99 or €449.99 (since March 2025), and Meta sells the 512 GB Quest 3 for US$599.99 in the United States (since 19 April 2026).[8][9] PS VR2 weighs about 560 g without its cable and Quest 3 weighs 515 g; Meta says Quest 3's battery provides 2.2 hours of use on average.[1][6][10][11]

Display and optics

The two headsets have similar pixel counts but different display technology. Sony lists OLED panels at 2000 x 2040 per eye and 90 Hz or 120 Hz, with HDR in both VR mode and Cinematic Mode.[4][1] Meta lists LCD panels at 2064 x 2208 per eye, which it rates at 25 pixels per degree and 1,218 pixels per inch.[12] In its October 2023 comparison, Android Central wrote that the OLED panels gave PS VR2 "richer colors and deeper blacks", while Quest 3 packed in more visual information.[20]

The optics differ more. PS VR2 uses Fresnel lenses, which Sony confirmed on its product page in February 2022.[17] Quest 3 uses pancake lenses, which Meta says give a 40% slimmer optic profile than Meta Quest 2 (measured without the foam facial interface).[14] In Road to VR's PS VR2 review, Ben Lang found "fairly good edge-to-edge clarity, but only if you can get your eyes in the headset's rather small eye-box", and more mura than on competing headsets.[5] UploadVR's technical analysis also described a very small sweet spot, with blur and color fringing outside it, and, with the lenses moved as close as possible, a field of view "noticeably taller than Quest"; that analysis was published before Quest 3 was released.[21]

The field-of-view figures cannot be compared directly. Sony gives "Approx. 110 degrees" without naming an axis, while Meta states 110 degrees horizontally and 96 degrees vertically.[4][3] Road to VR's specification list for PS VR2 marks Sony's figure as "diagonal presumed".[5]

Quest 3's consumer specification lists 72, 90 and 120 Hz.[16] Meta's developer documentation, updated 1 October 2026, says Quest 3 on Horizon OS v2.7 or later supports rates above 120 Hz, with 207 Hz the highest rate at full resolution; rates up to 240 Hz need developer mode and display scaling.[22]

Performance and hardware

PS VR2 has no game processor of its own. All rendering is done by the PS5, which the headset requires, or by a Windows PC through the PC adapter.[1][2] Its eye tracking lets games use foveated rendering, which Sony describes as adjusting resolution around where the player is looking.[1]

Quest 3 renders standalone games on its Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 with 8 GB of memory.[3] Meta says the chip gives more than twice the graphical performance of Quest 2.[14] Android Central wrote in 2023 that Quest 3 games "look significantly better" than on Quest 2 but are "still not on par with what the PS5 can offer".[20]

A game released on both platforms shows the gap in practice. In MIXED's April 2025 comparison of Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate, Tomislav Bezmalinovic found the PS VR2 version ran at a stable 90 Hz with foveated rendering and richer lighting, shadows and water, while the Quest 3 version used dynamic resolution and, despite Meta's metrics showing 90 fps, actually ran at 45 fps with Asynchronous SpaceWarp. He recommended the PS VR2 version where a player had the choice.[23]

Tracking and input

Both headsets use inside-out tracking without external base stations. PS VR2 has four embedded cameras that track the headset and the controllers, plus an IR camera for each eye.[4] Quest 3 has two color cameras among six external cameras, plus a depth sensor.[6][3] Road to VR found PS VR2's headset and controller tracking "very good" and said it performed well even in quite dark rooms.[7]

The controllers reflect different priorities. Each PS VR2 Sense controller has trigger effects on L2 and R2 (Sony's adaptive triggers), haptic feedback from a single actuator, capacitive finger touch detection, IR LEDs for tracking and a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery charged over USB-C.[4][1] Quest 3 ships with Touch Plus controllers, which have one voice coil motor for haptics and run on an AA battery for about 30 hours, according to Meta.[3] PS VR2 also has a vibration motor in the headset itself.[4]

Hand tracking is a standard Quest 3 input.[3] On PS VR2 it arrived later and is limited to games that add it: Sony made it available to developers in December 2024, and Waltz of the Wizard became the first game to use it on 11 February 2025.[18] In August 2025 UploadVR listed three released PS VR2 games with hand tracking and noted that the PS VR2 system interface did not support hand-tracking controls.[19] Quest 3 has no eye tracking, while PS VR2 uses its eye tracking for foveated rendering, and for in-game features such as characters that make eye contact with the player.[6][1][20]

Mixed reality and passthrough

Quest 3 is built for mixed reality. It has full-color stereoscopic passthrough from 4 MP cameras at 18 pixels per degree and a depth sensor.[3] Users switch between full VR and mixed reality by double-tapping the side of the headset.[12]

PS VR2's See-Through View uses the embedded tracking cameras and is view-only, with no recording option.[1] Road to VR found the view black and white, with better resolution and contrast than most contemporary headsets, but "it isn't geometrically correct".[7] UploadVR called it "clearly not perspective-correct" and noted that Sony did not present PS VR2 as a mixed reality headset.[21]

Software and content

PS VR2 games come from the PlayStation Store and run on the PS5. Sony said more than 30 games were planned for the launch window and more than 100 were in development, and that original PlayStation VR games do not work on PS VR2.[1] Since 7 August 2024, the PC adapter has let PS VR2 owners play SteamVR games on a Windows PC, without HDR, eye tracking, headset feedback, adaptive triggers, or haptic feedback other than rumble.[2]

Quest 3 runs Meta Horizon OS and was compatible at launch with the Quest 2 catalog of more than 500 games, apps and experiences.[14][3] It can also play PC VR games through Meta Quest Link over a cable or Air Link over Wi-Fi.[3]

In its 2023 comparison, Android Central wrote that PS VR2 gets exclusives such as Horizon Call of the Mountain, while most of its library consists of Quest games with enhanced graphics, and that games tend to be designed "for Quest first and then enhanced for PSVR 2".[20]

Comfort, weight and battery

Sony gives PS VR2's weight as about 560 g without cables, and Road to VR lists Quest 3 at 515 g.[1][6] The weight is only part of the difference. PS VR2 uses a halo-style headband tightened with a rear knob, while Quest 3 ships with a fabric strap.[20][24] Android Central's Michael Hicks wrote that PS VR2 is heavier but its weights "might be comparable" once Quest 3 is fitted with an Elite Strap.[20]

PS VR2 draws power through its single 4.5 m USB-C cable, so playing time is not limited by a headset battery, but the player stays tethered to the console.[1][20] Quest 3 has a 5,060 mAh battery,[11] which Meta says provides 2.2 hours of use on average, with mixed reality and more demanding apps able to reduce it.[10] Road to VR's review gave a range of 1.5 to 3 hours.[6] PS VR2's controllers use built-in rechargeable batteries, while Quest 3's Touch Plus controllers use AA batteries.[1][3]

PS VR2 needs a PS5, which costs extra for players who do not own one. Sony's recommended PS5 prices from 2 April 2026 are US$649.99 for the standard model and US$599.99 for the Digital Edition (£569.99 and £519.99; €649.99 and €599.99); Sony's announcement did not include PS VR2.[26] Quest 3 needs no other hardware for standalone use.[3]

In mid-September 2026, PS VR2 ran out of stock in the United States. On 18 September, MIXED reported that PlayStation Direct listed it at US$399 as "Currently Unavailable" and that Target also showed it out of stock; Sony had not commented or given a restock date, and the headset had not been discontinued.[27] PC Guide reported that many other regions were unaffected.[28] Sony's UK PlayStation Direct store listed PS VR2 and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle at £399.99 when checked on 14 October 2026.[29]

Reviews comparing the two

Several outlets compared the headsets directly. Their price comments reflect 2023 and 2024 pricing, before Sony's March 2025 price cut and Meta's April 2026 increase reversed which headset cost more.[8][9]

  • In its October 2023 comparison, Android Central's Michael Hicks credited PS VR2 with haptics, eye tracking, a higher-quality display, a more supportive halo strap and AAA games, and Quest 3 with color passthrough, ringless controllers, pancake lenses and a wireless design. He gave Quest 3 the general recommendation because it "is designed to work in any room", while recommending PS VR2 to players who want "powerful graphics, rich colors" and PS5 games.[20]
  • In a column the same week, Android Central's Nicholas Sutrich wrote that Quest 3's pancake lenses are "substantially clearer" than PS VR2's Fresnel lenses, but that the PS VR2 strap is "far more comfortable out of the box" and its vented shell keeps the lenses from fogging. He wrote that there was "little chance" he would recommend PS VR2 over Quest 3 to anyone who asked.[24]
  • In a November 2024 comparison, Trusted Reviews' Max Parker found the displays similar on paper, with PS VR2's OLED "a little more vibrant and colourful", praised the Sense controllers' haptics and adaptive triggers, and recommended "that most people pick the Meta Quest 3".[30]
  • MIXED's April 2025 test of Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate on both headsets favored the PS VR2 version for frame rate and visual detail.[23]
