PICO OS is the Android-based operating system that PICO, the XR hardware subsidiary of ByteDance, ships on its standalone virtual reality and mixed reality headsets. PICO describes it as "an Android-based operating system designed for PICO XR headsets", and its official release-notes page lists the PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, PICO 4 Ultra Enterprise, PICO 4E, PICO G3, the PICO Neo3 family and the PICO Neo3 Link as supported devices.[1]

The 5.x generation of the system launched with the PICO 4 in 2022, whose official specification sheet lists "PICO OS 5.0" as the operating system, and it has been updated in numbered releases since. PICO's release-notes page lists version 5.14 for the PICO 4 Ultra in August 2025 as its latest entry, while PICO's own sample code for that headset requires "OS version >= 5.15.0", so a 5.15 series has reached the headset without an entry on that page.[2][3][4] On March 2, 2026, PICO announced PICO OS 6, which it called "a fundamental reconstruction of the spatial operating system", built around a system-level renderer named the PICO Spatial Engine and intended for its next flagship headset, then code-named Project Swan and named the PICO Space Pro in August 2026.[5][6] PICO's developer FAQ states that PICO OS 6 "only runs on PICO Space Pro and the new PICO Emulator" and that older PICO devices "can only run PICO OS 5".[7] As of September 2026 that headset has not shipped: PICO cancelled a launch event planned for September 2, 2026 in Beijing and moved the release to the fourth quarter of 2026, citing "a major upgrade to the software experience".[8]

History

Earlier system software

Before the PICO 4, PICO's headsets ran system software that device-management vendors documented under the name PUI. ArborXR's support documentation for the PICO Neo 3 Pro, PICO G3 and PICO 4 Enterprise refers to "PUI 4.8.19 or higher" as the minimum system version for its update-management features on the Neo 3 Pro, and ManageXR's documentation calls the headset firmware the "PUI version" and notes that "Firmware version downgrades are not possible".[9][10] ByteDance acquired PICO in 2021.[11]

PICO OS 5

PICO marketed the system as PICO OS 5 with the PICO 4, which it announced on September 22, 2022 at 429 euros for the 128 GB model and released on October 18, 2022 in thirteen European countries, Japan and South Korea. PICO's launch material described the system as "custom developed based on Android" and "specially designed for VR all-in-one" headsets, and The Ghost Howls reported that the release added hand tracking and multitasking and shortened wake-up from sleep.[12] The headset's specification page lists its operating system as PICO OS 5.0.[2] PICO's product page for the headset advertises a PICO OS 5.0 Sports Center with a calorie-counting algorithm it calls CalSense, weekly fitness plans, a multi-player cinema with voice chat, and one-click sharing of the wearer's VR view to TikTok.[13]

The business variant, the PICO 4 Enterprise, shipped with what PICO called Pico Enterprise OS 5. Writing from AWE EU in October 2022, The Ghost Howls described it as "a special version of Pico OS 5, called Pico Enterprise OS 5" with an enterprise-specific app store, a locked-down launcher that showed only a few approved apps, operation without a PICO account, and a Kiosk mode so that "always the same application is running from the moment you turn on the headset".[14]

PICO shipped a series of point releases over the following years. Version 5.7.0 in August 2023, which MIXED called "one of the biggest firmware updates for Pico 4 to date", reduced virtual-hand jitter in hand tracking, improved the 6DoF tracking algorithms in dark rooms and large spaces, added a sharpness filter and better controller haptics for PC VR streaming, introduced automatic updates while the headset is idle with more than 50 percent battery, and added vertical 9:16 recording.[15] Version 5.9.0 in March 2024 replaced the Streaming Assistant PC application with PICO Connect, which added Mac desktop access and a Super Resolution option for streamed SteamVR games, and it added automatic format detection in the video player for 2D, 3D, 180-degree and 360-degree files.[16]

The PICO 4 Ultra, announced in China on August 20, 2024 with shipping from September 2, 2024, and released in Europe and Asia-Pacific on September 20, 2024, added mixed reality and multitasking features that later 5.x releases built on. PICO's launch announcement introduced a "panoramic workspace" in which users open and arrange multiple virtual screens in a real room, a single-click switch between immersive and passthrough modes in the navigation bar, and "full-chain" spatial video from capture to playback, including playback of spatial video and photos shot on the iPhone 15 Pro and Apple Vision Pro.[17][18][19] UploadVR reported that the workspace could hold up to 20 windows in a 360-degree arrangement, that browser windows, system panels and Android apps could all be placed in it, that the default rendering resolution for immersive apps rose to 1920 by 1920 from around 1500 by 1500 on the PICO 4, and that ByteDance was launching a 2D Android app store on PICO in China.[18][19] The same launch introduced the PICO Motion Trackers, ankle-worn trackers for full-body tracking that also work with the PICO 4, PICO 4 Pro and PICO Neo3.[17][20]

Later 5.x releases are covered in the version table below. The most recent entry on PICO's official release-notes page for the PICO 4 Ultra is version V5.14.4.U dated August 13, 2025.[1] A 5.15 series has since reached the headset without an entry on that page: PICO's SecureMR sample repository on GitHub lists "a PICO 4 Ultra device with the latest system update (OS version >= 5.15.0)" as a prerequisite.[3]

PICO OS 6

PICO announced PICO OS 6 on March 2, 2026, alongside a preview of Project Swan, and said the system had been two years in development.[5][21] The announcement stated that developers could start building apps for Project Swan with the OS 6 tools from that date and that the headset would launch "later this year"; the same announcement opened a PICO Global Early Access Program that recruits experienced users for a closed beta of both the headset and the operating system.[5] PICO's developer site describes PICO OS 6 as "designed exclusively for Project Swan".[22] PICO also scheduled a session at GDC 2026 for March 12, 2026, titled "Bring Your Apps and Games to General Spatial Computing with Project Swan", to walk developers through building or porting games for the headset.[23]

Project Swan itself dates back further. In December 2023, MIXED relayed a report by The Information that ByteDance had cancelled a planned Pico 5 after weak PICO 4 sales, cut roughly 400 of about 1,800 PICO staff, and kept two projects alive: a refreshed PICO 4 and a longer-term high-end headset code-named Swan that drew on the Apple Vision Pro.[24] On August 19, 2026, Road to VR reported that the product had been named Pico Space Pro and that PICO had scheduled a reveal event in Beijing for September 2, 2026.[6] Road to VR then reported on August 25, 2026 that PICO cancelled that event and moved the release window to Q4 2026, quoting a company statement that it wanted to present the headset "in a more complete state" and would spend more time on "a major upgrade to the software experience".[8] In early September 2026 the Space Pro cleared FCC certification, with the filings designating it a "Mixed Reality Computer"; the launch was still expected in the fourth quarter.[25][26]

Features

Home environment and windows

On the PICO 4 Ultra, PICO OS presents apps as windows in a 360-degree workspace that PICO calls PanoScreen. Version 5.12.0 added a multi-window mode for the browser and doubled the sampling rate of PanoScreen windows to reduce text aliasing, and it let users pair Bluetooth keyboards and mice in Home Space.[27] Version 5.13.0 changed how windows are placed: users can, in PICO's words, "freely adjust the distance and position of each window application".[28] UploadVR noted that windows had previously been held to "an invisible 360° bubble centered on your position" and that the change matched a capability of Apple's visionOS and Meta Horizon OS.[29]

Mixed reality, tracking and input

The PICO 4 Ultra's color passthrough is driven by two 32-megapixel cameras and an iToF depth camera with a stated range of up to 3 meters, while four tracking cameras handle SLAM positioning; PICO states that the headset reconstructs a virtual model of the room from these sensors and its own environment-perception algorithm.[17] Successive releases have worked on the passthrough image: 5.12.0 reduced distortion at very close range and ground shaking in bright sunlight, and 5.13.0 improved image quality in low light.[27][28] Several releases changed hand tracking, from the jitter reduction in 5.7.0 to a controller-free "hand-tracking only mode" toggled from the Control Center in 5.13.0 and further work on finger flexibility and wrist stability against similar skin tones in the 5.14 release.[15][28][1]

The system supports PICO Motion Trackers for full-body tracking. Each tracker contains an accelerometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic sensor and active infrared sensor, connects over a 2.4 GHz proprietary protocol, has a 220 mAh battery, and can alternatively be attached to an external object for object tracking.[20] Version 5.13.0 raised the update frequency of full-body motion data and improved tracking while sitting or lying down, and the 5.14 release added multi-mode tracking with up to five trackers, the extra two worn on the thighs or forearms. UploadVR priced that five-tracker configuration at 230 euros or 200 pounds in total.[28][4] Version 5.14 also introduced Travel Mode, which keeps positional tracking stable on trains and aircraft and which the headset offers to enable automatically when it detects a moving vehicle.[1][4]

Spatial video and photos

The PICO 4 Ultra records spatial video with its two color cameras at up to 2048 by 1536 pixels and 60 frames per second, and the gallery imports spatial photos and videos shot on Apple devices.[17] At launch PICO also shipped an on-device editing app that can publish spatial videos to TikTok.[18] Version 5.13.0 added conversion of ordinary 2D photos into stereoscopic images, including batch conversion, support for spatial photos from the iPhone 16, and screen recording in 3D that captures VR and mixed reality content together with the passthrough view rather than a flat image.[28][29]

PC streaming and device mirroring

PICO Connect is the companion application for streaming PC VR content. PICO describes it as software that lets users "stream and play your favorite SteamVR games, access computer desktop (Windows and Mac supported) and watch videos from your computer". The Windows and macOS versions require PICO OS 5.11.2 or later, while headsets on versions below 5.9.0 still use the older Streaming Assistant. PICO's download page lists version 10.6.6 dated September 2, 2025, which added mDNS discovery for wireless connections, and it gives minimum PC requirements of Windows 10 version 22H2, an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350, 8 GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon RX 480.[30] Version 5.12.0 extended PICO Connect to mirror and operate Android and iOS phones inside the headset, and 5.13.0 added frame interpolation to the PC application to improve streaming on mid-range and low-end PCs.[27][31]

Performance and developer options

Version 5.13.0 added a Performance Tuner to the developer options that lets users set the render resolution, refresh rate, CPU and GPU levels and fixed foveated rendering level for individual applications.[31][29] Version 5.12.0 introduced a PICO Simulator beta so developers could test without a physical headset.[27]

PICO OS 6 architecture

The main change PICO describes in PICO OS 6 is architectural. Where rendering was previously "siloed at the app level", the PICO Spatial Engine "moves the rendering pipeline to the OS level" so that, in PICO's words, the system can "render 2D apps, 3D objects, virtual environments, and physical reality simultaneously".[5][22] UploadVR summarized the result as a compositor in which 2D and 3D apps run alongside each other, with environmental lighting, dynamic occlusion, spatial audio and physics against real surfaces handled by the system, and contrasted it with Meta Horizon OS and Android XR, which at the time ran a single 3D app at once.[33] PICO calls the multitasking environment Shared Space, contrasts it with a Full Space mode for fully immersive apps, and names the visual style Cloud Crystal, an interface that PICO says adapts to the ambiance of the user's physical surroundings.[22]

Standard Android apps run inside the same environment rather than in a separate 2D layer, and the input system switches between look-and-pinch gestures, motion controllers and a wireless keyboard and mouse according to the user's preference.[21][22] PICO said that for "the 2,600+ enterprise institutions PICO serves", the architecture "provides a stable and responsive digital workspace for professional spatial collaboration".[5]

PICO states that PICO OS 6 treats spatial apps, OpenXR, WebXR, Android apps, web apps and PC VR streaming as "equal pillars" of the platform.[5] UploadVR reported that the OS continues to support OpenXR in full and that all apps running on the PICO 4 Ultra will run on Project Swan.[33] The system is not planned for existing headsets: PICO's developer FAQ says it runs only on the PICO Space Pro and the PICO Emulator, and that older devices stay on PICO OS 5.[7] The hardware the system is designed for, per PICO, pairs micro-OLED displays of about 4,000 pixels per inch with an average of 40 pixels per degree and more than 45 in the center, a custom XR chip for perception and imaging with a stated 12 milliseconds of latency, and a flagship SoC that PICO says delivers more than double the CPU and GPU performance of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2.[5][22][34]

Developer tools

PICO publishes SDKs for the 5.x platform on GitHub. The PICO Unity Integration SDK, at version 3.4.0 released February 27, 2026, provides spatial anchors, shared spatial anchors, spatial mesh, scene capture and plane detection on PICO 4 series devices, camera image access, and additions to SecureMR, PICO's framework for combining machine-learning algorithms such as face detection and depth estimation with the headset's camera-based mixed reality.[35][36] The separate PICO Unity OpenXR SDK, version 1.4.0 of April 7, 2025, supports Unity 6 and AR Foundation 6, requires a device system version of 5.13.0 or later, and exposes hand tracking at 60 Hz, body tracking and enterprise device-settings APIs.[37]

For PICO OS 6, PICO introduced the PICO Spatial SDK, which is "built around Kotlin and declarative UI" so that Android developers can write native spatial apps or upgrade existing Android apps; PICO Spatial UI, a component-based interface library with Figma resources; a PICO Spatial Plugin and PICO Spatial Editor for Android Studio; and a desktop PICO Emulator that runs the full PICO OS 6 image for testing on a PC or Mac without a headset.[22][7] PICO also released WebSpatial, an open-source framework that uses HTML, CSS and React to build spatial web apps that run on PICO OS, visionOS and Android XR while keeping the site's existing web functions, and it said that through new Unity and Unreal Engine integration "developers can now build Mixed Reality games to run alongside 2D and 3D apps".[5][22] PICO said developers could start building for Project Swan with these tools from March 2, 2026.[5]

Enterprise management

PICO's business headsets run the same system with enterprise additions. The 2022 PICO 4 Enterprise shipped with Pico Enterprise OS 5, a management panel for fleets of headsets and a Kiosk mode.[14] On October 29, 2024, PICO announced the PICO Business Device Manager, a hosted mobile device management platform for its enterprise devices. PICO listed batch enrollment, retention of devices on the platform after a factory reset, single sign-on and corporate-email PICO accounts, centralized distribution of apps, videos, files and virtual maps, a shared content library for independent software vendors, a customizable home screen with Kiosk Mode, real-time remote commands such as live screen monitoring and reboots, and customizable user roles. The company offered a 12-month free trial to customers enrolling devices before June 1, 2025.[38] The current product page lists business-email accounts with single sign-on, remote actions (live monitoring, reboot, shutdown, data wiping and factory reset), a custom home screen with Kiosk Mode, custom roles and teams, and deployment of saved configuration packages to devices or device groups.[39] Third-party MDM vendors such as ArborXR and ManageXR also manage PICO OS updates on the Neo 3 Pro, G3 and PICO 4 Enterprise, including pinning a fleet to a tested version.[9][10]

Reception

UploadVR wrote that with 5.13.0 users could position windows "as with visionOS and Horizon OS", and called 3D screen recording that includes VR and mixed reality objects and interfaces "a unique and interesting feature that we haven't seen on any other headset".[29] MIXED headlined its 5.13.0.U coverage as features its reviewer would miss on Meta Quest, singling out the Performance Tuner, the photo conversion tools and the lying-down shortcut.[31] In their PICO OS 6 coverage, Road to VR and UploadVR concentrated on the system-level rendering that lets several apps share one space and on Android apps running inside it, and both noted that the headset it targets had not launched and had no announced price.[21][33]
