Flat2VR Studios is an American video game studio that makes officially licensed virtual reality versions of games originally released for flat screens. It was announced in March 2024 by Impact Reality, a VR publishing and marketing company, and grew out of the Flat2VR modding community, which had been making unofficial VR mods of flatscreen games.[1][2] The studio works with the original developers and rights holders and sells its versions on the Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2 and Steam storefronts.[1]
Its first release was Trombone Champ: Unflattened in November 2024. Later releases include Roboquest VR (2025), Out of Sight VR (Steam Early Access, 2025) and WRATH: Aeon of Ruin VR - Brutal Edition (2026), and in August 2026 it announced VR versions of System Shock and High On Life.[3][4][5] Through its Flat2VR Spark program the studio also pairs individual VR modders with game developers to make official ports.[6]
History
Background
Impact Reality began as a public relations and marketing firm for VR games. In an October 2024 interview on the Voices of VR podcast, its COO Eric Masher said that he, CEO Jasmine Uniza and Harry Skigis of the Between Realities podcast had started the company about two and a half years earlier. He said the company changed direction about a year and a half before the interview, when Elliott Tate joined; Masher referred to Tate as its chief creative officer.[7] Tate founded the Flat2VR community and earlier started the Beat Saber modding group; he also worked with the modder Praydog on UEVR, a mod that adds VR support to Unreal Engine games.[1][8] Masher said the community's Discord server had well over 100,000 members.[7]
MIXED described the community's earlier work as mostly unlicensed PC VR mods, among them conversions of Cyberpunk 2077, Half-Life 2 and several Resident Evil remakes, along with the UEVR injector for Unreal Engine titles. Half-Life 2: VR Mod was an exception: it received Valve's approval and was released on Steam.[9] Steam now lists Flat2VR Studios as the publisher of that free mod, which the Source VR Mod Team developed and released on 16 September 2022 (see Half Life 2).[10]
Founding and funding
Flat2VR Studios was revealed on the Q2C VR Gamer podcast in mid-March 2024.[9] UploadVR and Road to VR reported that Impact Reality had formed it with developers from the VR modding scene: Team Beef, known for VR ports of Doom and Quake III Arena; Cabalistic, known for Half-Life 2: VR Mod; and Raicuparta, maker of the Outer Wilds and Firewatch VR mods.[2][1][9] Tate said at the launch: "The Flat2VR community has proven there is a tremendous appetite to experience cherished games in an entirely new way."[2] Masher said the modding community had "no business plan" and "no structure", and described the studio's aim as showing rights holders that licensing their games for VR could be profitable.[7]
At the end of March 2024, Uniza announced an investment partnership with Hartmann Capital, a US firm that invests in VR and AR among other areas. MIXED could not find out how much Hartmann had invested.[11] In August 2024 the studio was accepted into the third cohort of SPEEDRUN, the games accelerator run by Andreessen Horowitz's a16z Games. It was one of 37 companies picked from about 4,100 applicants, and according to MIXED the program invests 750,000 US dollars in each selected startup.[12][13] Tate said the funding would not take control away from the studio.[12] In a September 2025 Voices of VR interview, Uniza said the company had started out fully bootstrapped and that Meta had funded the Trombone Champ project.[14]
First releases
In August 2024 the studio named its first four projects: VR versions of Trombone Champ, Roboquest, FlatOut and WRATH: Aeon of Ruin, the last made with Team Beef and 3D Realms.[15] Trombone Champ: Unflattened, made with the original developer Holy Wow Studios, came out on 26 November 2024 for Quest, PC VR and PlayStation VR2.[16][3] When the game was announced, the studio confirmed it would partner with Raicuparta, who had made an unofficial VR mod of Trombone Champ called BaboonVR within weeks of the flatscreen game's launch.[17] Uniza said in September 2025 that the game was still the company's largest source of revenue.[14]
At the VR Games Showcase in March 2025, the studio announced a slate of PlayStation VR2 titles: Out of Sight VR (with The Gang), Roboquest VR (with RyseUp Studios and Starbreeze), WRATH: Aeon of Ruin VR and POSTAL 2 VR (both developed by Team Beef with Flat2VR Studios), plus two games it would publish, Shadowgate VR: The Mines of Mythrok and Surviving Mars: Pioneer.[18] Out of Sight VR launched in Early Access on Steam on 22 May 2025, the same day as the flatscreen game.[19][20] Roboquest VR followed on Steam and PlayStation VR2 on 20 November 2025. Its Quest 3 and 3S version arrived on 23 July 2026 with a free update that added two-player co-op across all three platforms.[21][22]
Impact Inked, Spark and POSTAL 2
In May 2025 Impact Reality opened Impact Inked, a publishing label for games built for VR from the start. Impact Reality said that "not every project fits within the core mission of Flat2VR Studios". The label's first title was Bolverk Games' Surviving Mars: Pioneer, co-published with Paradox Interactive.[23] Impact Inked has since been listed as publisher on several Flat2VR projects, including Roboquest VR on Steam and the Disney DLC for Trombone Champ: Unflattened.[24][25] In August 2026 the label introduced Unlock The Vault, a program for bringing other studios' VR games to PlayStation VR2, starting with Soul Assembly's Drop Dead: The Cabin. Flat2VR's Myles Dyer presented it in a video that also featured former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida.[26]
In June 2025 Flat2VR Studios, Team Beef and Running With Scissors announced POSTAL 2 Redux, a non-VR remake of the 2003 shooter that moves the game from Unreal Engine 1.5 to Unity. The press release named Flat2VR Studios as publisher and Team Beef, a three-person studio, as the lead developer of both POSTAL 2 Redux and POSTAL 2 VR.[27] The Kickstarter campaign went live at the VR Games Showcase in August 2025 and ended on 13 September 2025, having raised 691,332 US dollars from 6,254 backers.[6][28] Tate later said the Kickstarter had opened the door to a bigger budget for POSTAL 2, and that Meta had funded some of the studio's other games.[8] As of October 2026, Steam lists POSTAL 2 VR for 2027.[29]
Co-founders Tate and Masher announced Flat2VR Spark at the same August 2025 showcase. Under Spark, small teams of experienced modders build the VR version while Flat2VR Studios handles licensing, quality assurance and platform certification. Partners receive credit and a share of revenue, and the original rights holder keeps the intellectual property. The studio said the program was not outsourcing; the titles named at launch were FlatOut 4: Total Insanity, I Am Your Beast, The Signal: Stranded on Sirenis, SPRAWL and Stop Dead.[6] Tate said Spark projects are worked on the side, the way mods are, and have no timelines, because deadlines kill many projects.[8]
2026
WRATH: Aeon of Ruin VR - Brutal Edition, developed by Team Beef and Flat2VR Studios and co-published with 3D Realms, was released on 9 April 2026 for Quest, Steam and PlayStation VR2.[30][31] The first Spark release, FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR, entered Early Access on Steam on 7 May 2026 after a two-week delay from 23 April. The port was led by the modder Mutar, and the conversion required new first-person cockpits for every vehicle.[32][33][8]
On 13 August 2026, at the VR Games Showcase, the studio announced System Shock VR, made with Nightdive Studios, whose System Shock remake was released in 2023, and High On Life VR, made with Squanch Games and planned for 2027. Both are coming to Quest, PlayStation VR2 and PC VR.[4][5] A Disney DLC for Trombone Champ: Unflattened, Disney Movie Magic Volume 1, was released on 20 August 2026.[25] I Am Your Beast VR, a Spark adaptation of Strange Scaffold's shooter, launched on Steam on 17 September 2026.[34]
Organization
The studio's profile on a16z's speedrun site lists Wesley Chapel, Florida, as its location and a team of 40. That profile names Jasmine Uniza (CEO and co-founder, formerly a technical program manager at Oculus/Meta and Apple), Elliott Tate (chief creative officer), Eric Masher (COO, founder of the Quest 2 Community group on Facebook) and Harry "Skeeva" Skigis (chief information officer and co-founder, co-host of the Between Realities VR Podcast).[35] Its press releases carry a Tampa, Florida, dateline.[36] Impact Reality's website lists Flat2VR Studios as its development division, next to the Impact Inked publishing label, Flat2VR Spark, the testing service Impact Labs, and its PR and marketing business.[37] In a May 2026 UploadVR interview, which gave Tate's titles as chief creative officer and chief technical officer, he said that many contributors still had full-time jobs elsewhere and that the team's size limited how many projects it could take on at once.[8]

Reception
After the launch of Trombone Champ: Unflattened, Road to VR reported user ratings of 4.9 out of 5 on Quest (251 ratings), 100 percent positive on PC VR (43 ratings) and 4.9 out of 5 on PlayStation VR2 (120 ratings). It added that the game's niche appeal meant the scores did not point to blockbuster sales.[3] Road to VR included the game in its best VR games of 2024 and wrote that it expected more traditional studios to "take note of the studio's clearly expert porting chops".[39] UploadVR named Roboquest VR its PC VR Game of the Year for 2025.[40] It gave WRATH: Aeon of Ruin VR - Brutal Edition 3.5 out of 5. The review said the new features were substantial enough to set the port apart from the original, but found long-range aiming a hassle with some weapons, reloading and the slide less snappy than they could be, and the game slower than the fast rhythm of its boomer shooter genre.[30]
