System Shock VR is an upcoming virtual reality version of System Shock, the 2023 remake of the 1994 first-person science fiction game, developed by Flat2VR Studios with the remake's developer Nightdive Studios. It was announced on 13 August 2026 at the VR Games Showcase for SteamVR, Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2.[1][2] The game's Steam page lists Impact Inked and Atari as publishers.[3]

As of 29 September 2026 no release date has been announced. The store pages on Steam, the Meta Horizon Store and the PlayStation Store accept wishlists and list the game as "To be announced", "Coming soon" and "Release date to be determined" respectively.[3][4][5]

Gameplay

The Steam description invites players to "relive the original System Shock" in VR. The player is a hacker who was caught breaking into the files of TriOptimum Corporation and accepted a deal from executive Edward Diego: remove the ethical restrictions from the artificial intelligence of Citadel Station in return for freedom and an experimental neural implant. Six months later the player wakes to find that the AI, SHODAN, controls the station and that its crew are "dead, mutated, or remade as cyborgs."[3][5] In its announcement coverage, PC Gamer described the game, "going by the Steam description", as "a straight VR translation of the original game rather than a Half-Life: Alyx-style spinoff".[6]

According to the store description, players explore the station's decks, including medical facilities, research laboratories, maintenance tunnels, executive suites and biological groves, and return to earlier areas as new equipment, codes and access privileges open other routes. They search for crew recordings, emails, weapons, ammunition, hardware and dermal patches, destroy surveillance cameras and computer nodes to lower security, and solve circuitry and access puzzles. Through a neural interface the player can also enter cyberspace, which is navigated "in six degrees of movement", to fight hostile programs and change the physical station from inside its network. Combat uses melee weapons, firearms, energy weapons and explosives against robots, mutants and cyborgs, while the player manages health, ammunition, energy, inventory and installed hardware.[3]

Flat2VR Studios describes the game as bringing the remake "to full room-scale VR", with terminals hacked "with your own hands".[7] Based on the reveal trailer, KitGuru reported that the port offers full movement and direct control of the character's appendages, allowing freeform aiming, crouching and peeking around corners.[8] The PlayStation Store listing gives sitting and standing as the supported VR play styles, with PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers and headset vibration listed as optional features.[5] On Steam the game is marked as VR only, single-player and with tracked controller support.[3]

Development

The game is a port of Nightdive Studios' System Shock remake, which was released on Steam on 30 May 2023 with Atari and Nightdive Studios as publishers.[9] UploadVR reported that the remake came out after a seven-year development period and that Flat2VR Studios is making the VR version in partnership with Nightdive.[1] According to heise online, a VR version had already been planned for the remake, but its Kickstarter campaign did not reach the intended stretch goal and the VR plans were shelved in 2016.[10]

Flat2VR Studios specializes in converting existing flatscreen games to VR. Its parent company, Impact Reality, runs Impact Inked as a separate publishing label, which it launched in May 2025.[11][12] The PlayStation Store lists the game under Impact Reality, Inc.[5] VR.org noted that Flat2VR began as a modding community and that an unofficial System Shock VR mod had come out of that scene before this official release was announced.[13]

Release

System Shock VR was the last announcement of the August 2026 VR Games Showcase on 13 August 2026. At the same show Flat2VR Studios also announced High On Life VR.[1][14] No release date was given at the reveal.[6][10] VR.org, describing Impact Reality's investor campaign material, listed System Shock VR and High On Life VR as the company's two announcements with a 2027 window.[12]

The Steam page gives the same PC requirements for minimum and recommended settings except for graphics: Windows 10 or higher, an Intel i5-4590 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X processor and 5 GB of RAM, with an NVIDIA GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX 480 at minimum and an "NVIDIA GTX 2070 / AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT" recommended.[3] Its mature content notice says the game contains scenes of violence and gore toward humanoid enemies and warns that its spider-like enemies may disturb players with arachnophobia.[3]

Reception

The game had not been released or reviewed as of September 2026. In its announcement article, PC Gamer said the game "could be quite good (for a VR game, anyway)" but questioned the size of its audience, pointing to the share of Steam users with VR headsets in the Steam Hardware and Software Survey remaining well below 2% and to Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, which peaked at 233 concurrent players on Steam.[6]
