Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is a first-person stealth game for virtual reality headsets, developed by Maze Theory and published by Vertigo Games in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal. It is the first entry in the Thief series made for VR. Players control Magpie, a thief in the dark, steampunk-inspired City, who sets out against its tyrannical ruler, Baron Ulysses Northcrest.[1][2]

The game was announced on 4 June 2025 and released on 4 December 2025 for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2 and PC VR through Steam.[1][3] Its story is set between the original Thief trilogy and the 2014 reboot, and Stephen Russell returns as the voice of Garrett, the protagonist of the earlier games.[4][5] The game was nominated for Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 29th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.[6]

Gameplay

The game is played from a first-person perspective and uses the player's body movement for stealth: players physically crouch behind cover and peek around corners,[7] and use their hands to pickpocket, bypass locks and pry open hidden compartments.[1] Missions are sandbox-style levels in which the player can sneak through without being seen, deal with guards one at a time, or explore at their own pace.[8] According to the Meta Quest blog, each mission has one primary objective in which something has to be stolen, supported by optional side objectives; killing guards is possible but counts against the player's end-of-level score.[9] Gaming Trend's review counted seven missions plus a tutorial.[10]

Magpie's main tool is a bow with several arrow types. Water arrows extinguish torches, fire arrows can be used as distractions, and rope arrows are used to climb; arrows are usually in short supply.[8][11][12] A blackjack is used to knock guards out; unconscious guards can be woken by patrolling colleagues.[12] Glyph Vision, activated by holding a hand up to the temple, highlights enemies and points of interest for a short time and then needs to recharge.[12][7] Some guards can kill the player in one hit, which pushes players toward stealth rather than combat.[7]

Light and sound are central to the stealth systems. Candles can be pinched out by hand or blown out through the headset's microphone, and noises such as eating an apple can alert guards.[11][10] The microphone can be set to be ignored, to detect blowing only, or to an "Immersive Mode" in which real-world sounds picked up by the microphone become in-game noise that guards can hear; guards also relight candles that the player has put out.[10]

Comfort options

Road to VR listed snap turning, smooth turning, smooth movement, artificial and real crouching, seated and standing modes, adjustable player height, blinders and subtitles among the game's comfort settings.[13] UploadVR described it as a physically involved game in which full-body motion is required, including climbing sections.[14]

Story and setting

The game takes place in the City, a dark, steampunk-inspired setting ruled by Baron Ulysses Northcrest. Magpie is a thief orphaned by Northcrest's brutality who uncovers a legendary artifact holding a legacy from the past, along with a sinister conspiracy that looms over the City.[1] Maze Theory's Richard Bunn said the game is set 200 years after the original games and connects the two eras.[7][1] Maze Theory chief creative officer Russ Harding described the game as taking place between the original trilogy and the 2014 reboot, and said Garrett is not just a cameo and that his presence runs deep throughout the story.[8] Stephen Russell reprises his role as Garrett.[5][4]

Development

Maze Theory developed the game, with Vertigo Games as publisher and support from Eidos-Montréal.[4][1] In an interview with UploadVR, Vertigo Games principal designer Nick Witsel said the two studios were already discussing a collaboration when Eidos-Montréal was acquired by Embracer Group, which also owns Vertigo Games through Plaion. After seeing Maze Theory's atmospheric work on its Peaky Blinders VR game, Vertigo pitched Thief to the studio, and the concept was then pitched to Eidos-Montréal, which Witsel said gave the team support and a lot of creative freedom.[7]

Witsel told UploadVR that lighting was one of the main challenges: the original games used a heads-up light indicator and clearly color-coded light and dark areas, while completely black shadows feel disconnecting in VR, so the team made dark areas somewhat lighter than they would realistically be. Richard Bunn of Maze Theory named sound design as another key challenge, and Witsel said closed doors help obscure noises made in a room.[7] Harding told the Meta Quest blog that the game was built from the ground up for VR rather than ported from a flat-screen version.[8]

At the reveal, Vertigo Games CEO Richard Stitselaar said, "We set out to create a VR experience where players don't just play a thief; they become one." Steven Gallagher, creative director at Eidos-Montréal, and Phil White, CEO of Maze Theory, were also quoted in the announcement.[1] In a PlayStation.Blog post, Witsel and Gallagher said the PlayStation VR2 headset's OLED contrast gives an advantage in the shadows and that haptic feedback assists with lockpicking.[5]

Release

Vertigo Games announced the game on 4 June 2025 for PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 2, 3 and 3S, and PC VR, with a release planned for later that year.[1] On 30 October 2025 the publisher set the release date of 4 December 2025 and listed a launch price of US$29.99, 29.99 euros or 24.99 pounds, with a 10% pre-order discount on all platforms.[3] Road to VR reported that the Meta Quest version supports Meta Quest 2 and newer headsets.[15]

Updates

The first patch arrived about a week after launch.[16] Patch 3.0, reported by UploadVR on 21 January 2026, rebalanced lighting in the game's dark environments, reduced crashes and bugs, added a setting to choose which microphone input the sound-detection mechanic uses, and added formal SteamVR support for HTC Vive and Valve Index headsets.[16] Patch 4.0, reported on 29 January 2026 for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2 and Steam, reworked the crouch mechanics and gave the Steam version higher-quality dynamic shadows and character models.[17]

Reception

As of September 2026, on Metacritic the PlayStation 5 version holds a Metascore of 69 from 10 critic reviews and the Meta Quest version 75 from 8 reviews.[18] OpenCritic lists a top critic average of 78 from 18 reviews, with 44% of critics recommending the game.[19]

Publication Score Platform reviewed
Road to VR 7/10 Meta Quest 3, SteamVR[13]
UploadVR 4/5 Meta Quest 3[14]
Gaming Trend 90/100 PC VR[10]

Scott Hayden of Road to VR called it one of the best stealth games in VR and praised its visuals, layered level design, environmental storytelling and Stephen Russell's return. He criticized the ending, the reuse of two earlier levels in the missions leading up to it, guard AI he found too simple and forgiving, and object handling he described as "fumbly"; his campaign took just over five hours.[13] Elijah Beahm of UploadVR wrote that the stealth plays like free-form puzzle solving and liked the voice input and tactile lockpicking and pickpocketing, but noted easily fooled guards and technical problems such as objects failing to load; he finished the campaign in about five and a half hours, and wrote that a few levels are repeated with updated layouts and objectives. He found clear resolution and texture compromises in the Quest 3 version and wrote that PC VR offers a notable visual upgrade.[14]

The game was one of five nominees for Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 29th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, alongside Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked, Marvel's Deadpool VR and The Midnight Walk; the award went to Ghost Town.[6]
