Ghost Town is a single-player virtual reality puzzle-adventure game developed and published by Fireproof Games. It released for Meta Quest on April 24, 2025,[1] for SteamVR on July 15, 2025,[2] and for PlayStation VR2 on December 1, 2025.[3] The game is set in 1983 and casts the player as Edith Penrose, a ghost hunter and exorcist who runs a paranormal detective agency and investigates the disappearance of her brother.[2][4]
Ghost Town is the second VR title from Fireproof Games, a studio based in Guildford, England, that is known for the touch-screen puzzle series The Room and its earlier VR entry The Room VR: A Dark Matter (2020).[5][6] It was widely received as a spiritual successor to that game.[1] Ghost Town won the overall Game of the Year award in Road to VR's 2025 awards, Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 29th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards in 2026, and both Game of the Year and Best Puzzle Game at the 2025 TIGA Games Industry Awards.[7][8][9]
Gameplay
Ghost Town is played from a first-person perspective using two tracked motion controllers. The player explores environments, manipulates objects by hand, and solves tactile puzzles such as opening locked containers, aligning mechanisms, and tracing symbols.[4][2] A handheld torch is used to light dark spaces and reveal hidden detail.[4]
The character Edith uses supernatural abilities alongside conventional puzzle-solving. Players cast spells with motion controls and haptic feedback to help trapped spirits move on, which is done by severing the spirits' links to objects from their pasts.[1] The story unfolds across several locations in the United Kingdom, including a haunted theatre, a tower block, and a lighthouse, with characters both living and dead involved in the investigation.[2][4] UploadVR described the experience as a "spiritual cousin" to The Room, with the player effectively standing inside the puzzle boxes rather than handling them on a screen.[1]
The game is single-player and supports comfort settings together with 3D spatial audio.[4][2] UploadVR reported a play time of roughly five hours to complete.[1]
Development
Fireproof Games was founded in 2008 by a group of artists who had previously worked together at Criterion Games on the Burnout series.[5] The studio self-published its first game, The Room, on iPad in 2012, followed by The Room Two (2013), The Room Three (2015) and The Room: Old Sins (2018).[5] Its first virtual reality game, The Room VR: A Dark Matter, released on March 26, 2020 for Oculus, SteamVR and PlayStation VR.[10]
Ghost Town builds on that VR work with a larger, character-driven narrative. Fireproof framed it as a supernatural puzzle adventure set in the 1980s United Kingdom in which the player takes the role of ghost hunter and exorcist Edith Penrose, who runs a paranormal detective agency with a partner.[3][6] The game was built for OpenXR and requires motion controllers.[2] A PC VR demo was released ahead of the SteamVR launch.[2]
Release
Ghost Town launched first on Meta Quest, then on PC via SteamVR, and finally on PlayStation VR2. The Quest version was priced at US $24.99 at launch.[11] The Steam release on July 15, 2025 supports English plus eight additional languages, including French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese.[2]

Reception
Ghost Town was received positively. On Steam the game held an "Overwhelmingly Positive" user review summary, with about 95% of more than 500 user reviews being positive.[2] UploadVR rated it 4.5 out of 5, calling it "an utterly engrossing supernatural VR adventure" and "one of the best VR games so far this year," while noting that the roughly five-hour campaign could have been longer.[1]
The game won several end-of-year and industry awards:
| Award | Category | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Road to VR 2025 Game of the Year Awards | Game of the Year (overall) | Won[7] |
| 2025 TIGA Games Industry Awards | Game of the Year | Won[9] |

| 29th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards (2026) | Immersive Reality Game of the Year | Won[8] |
In its Game of the Year writeup, Road to VR called Ghost Town the most impressive game to come from the studio and praised its environments, character animation and story.[7] The D.I.C.E. win, presented by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences in February 2026, was Fireproof's first win in the Immersive Reality Game of the Year category, having previously been nominated for The Room VR: A Dark Matter.[8][10]
