Tetsuya Mizuguchi is a Japanese video game producer and designer, the founder and CEO of Enhance, Inc. and a project professor at Keio University's Graduate School of Media Design.[1][2][3] His games combine music, light and player input in an effort to produce synesthesia-like experiences, an approach that runs from Rez (2001) and Lumines (2004) through Rez Infinite (2016) and Tetris Effect (2018).[4][3]

He returned to full-time game development in 2015 because of virtual reality, and most of his projects since then support VR headsets.[5] Rez Infinite was released for the PlayStation VR headset on 13 October 2016 and won the first Best VR Game award at The Game Awards that year.[6][7] He also initiated the Synesthesia Suit, a full-body haptic suit built with Keio University researchers and the media art group Rhizomatiks for Rez Infinite.[8] Enhance's later releases with optional VR modes include Humanity (2023) and Lumines Arise (2025), and in September 2026 the company revealed Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities for Meta VR Glasses and Meta Quest 3.[9][1][10]

Education and joining Sega

Mizuguchi graduated in media aesthetics from Nihon University.[11] He joined Sega in 1990.[11][12] His accounts of why have varied between interviews. The New Statesman reported in 2017 that he decided to enter the games industry after seeing a photograph of NASA's VIEW virtual reality headset.[11] In a 2025 UploadVR interview he named Sega AM2's R360, a rotating arcade cockpit released in 1990, and said: "I was a gamer, and all the coolest cabinets had the SEGA logo, so I wanted to work for SEGA." In the same interview he said that "already, I could see a future in which virtual reality would be a massive thing."[13]

Career

Sega (1990-2003)

According to a 2023 Time Extension history of Sega's AS-1 motion simulator, Mizuguchi spent his first years at the company researching new technologies in its AM4 and AM5 divisions. In 1992 he was given his own sub-division under AM3, the "Emotion Design Lab", equipped with Silicon Graphics workstations. There he created Megalopolis: Tokyo City Battle, a non-interactive computer-generated ride film for the AS-1, with AM3 developer Jun Uriu and Michael Arias. A trailer for it was shown at SIGGRAPH 1993, and the film had a limited release that year.[14] The same article says that the AS-1 ride films brought him together with Kenji Sasaki, and that the two went on to work as producer and director of Sega Rally Championship.[14] The New Statesman dates Sega Rally to 1994.[11]

Mizuguchi renamed Sega's R&D #9 division United Game Artists (UGA) in 2000; it was a wholly owned Sega subsidiary. Its team, which he said grew to "seventy-odd people", made the music games Space Channel 5 and Rez at the same time.[12] Mizuguchi traced Rez to a street parade he attended in Zurich during a research trip for Sega Rally, and to conversations with the VJ Jun Kobayashi about Wassily Kandinsky, who painted while inspired by music. In the game, the sounds made by shooting are quantized to the beat of the soundtrack.[12] Rez was released in 2001, as one of the last games for the Dreamcast and one of the first Sega games on the PlayStation 2.[12] It received a Special Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival and an Honorary Mention in the Ars Electronica Interactive Arts category in 2002.[4]

In a September 2003 restructuring, Sega dissolved United Game Artists and moved its staff into Sonic Team. Mizuguchi announced on 7 October 2003 that he would leave Sega on 10 October to work independently, saying he had worked at the company for 14 years.[15]

Q Entertainment (2003-2014)

After leaving Sega, Mizuguchi co-founded Q Entertainment in 2003 with Shuji Utsumi.[16][17] The studio's games included the Lumines series, Every Extend Extra and Child of Eden.[17] Lumines, released for the PlayStation Portable in 2004, was the first of his music games to sell more than a million copies, according to UploadVR.[13] Child of Eden, published by Ubisoft, was released for Xbox 360 in June 2011; the player can aim and fire with arm movements through Kinect.[18]

In October 2012 Mizuguchi left Q Entertainment's board of directors to become a project professor at Keio University's Graduate School of Media Design (KMD), while remaining with Q as a spokesperson.[17][19] He left Q Entertainment in March 2014.[16]

Enhance and virtual reality (2014-present)

Enhance states that it was established in the United States in October 2014, with a branch in Tokyo; Mizuguchi is its CEO.[2] Engadget reported in January 2015 that he would make a new Lumines game at his "new California-based studio, Enhance Games."[16] In a December 2015 Polygon interview he said that seeing early virtual reality demos had brought him back to full-time game development. He was then Enhance's only employee and planned to work with contractors and external studios; the company had one group for mobile games and one for virtual reality. He had registered the company in California because he saw more investment opportunity there, "particularly in virtual reality ideas", although he was based in Tokyo.[5]

Rez Infinite

Rez Infinite, a remastered Rez with an optional PlayStation VR mode, was revealed at Sony's PlayStation Experience in December 2015. Enhance developed it with Monstars, a studio founded by a programmer on the original game.[5] It launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR on 13 October 2016. A new level, Area X, was built with Unreal Engine 4; on PS VR the original areas run at 120 frames per second, and Area X runs at 60 frames per second reprojected to 120.[6] At The Game Awards 2016 it won the first Best VR Game award, in a category whose five nominees were all PlayStation VR games.[7][4] The PC version, with HTC Vive and Oculus Rift support, followed on Steam and the Oculus store on 9 August 2017.[20] A PlayStation 5 version with PlayStation VR2 support released on 22 February 2023; Enhance said that PS VR2's eye tracking let players "track and aim at enemies using just your eyes", and the version also uses haptics in the controllers and headset.[21]

Synesthesia Suit and Synesthesia X1

Mizuguchi proposed the Synesthesia Suit as a collaboration between Associate Professor Kouta Minamizawa's haptics team at KMD and Rhizomatiks. The suit has 26 actuators that vibrate in time with the music of Rez Infinite, and LEDs on its exterior light up in sync with the vibrations, extending the experience to people nearby. He wore it while playing Rez Infinite on stage at PlayStation Experience 2015 in San Francisco; it was later shown at Media Ambition Tokyo 2016, SIGGRAPH 2016, Tokyo Game Show 2016 and the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017.[8] Mizuguchi is a co-author of the SIGGRAPH 2016 VR Village paper describing it, with Yukari Konishi, Nobuhisa Hanamitsu, Benjamin Outram, Minamizawa and Ayahiko Sato.[22]

He is also the principal of Synesthesia Lab, which Enhance describes as an experimental research and development lab studying synesthesia.[4][23] Its Synesthesia X1 - 2.44 (2019), a joint project of Enhance and Rhizomatiks featuring the sound artist evala, is a device fitted with 44 vibrating actuators that was shown at Media Ambition Tokyo in 2019.[23]

Tetris Effect and later games

In October 2017 Mizuguchi and Henk Rogers of The Tetris Company agreed to partner on making Tetris Effect.[24] The game launched on 9 November 2018 for PlayStation 4 with PlayStation VR support, then came to PC with optional VR on 23 July 2019, to Oculus Quest on 14 May 2020, and, as Tetris Effect: Connected, to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 on 22 February 2023. At the Game Developers Conference in March 2019, Mizuguchi and Mark MacDonald, its producers, presented the game's development with director Takashi Ishihara.[24] In September 2020 Mizuguchi gave a session on his design approach at Facebook Connect, delivered in Japanese with English subtitles and published by Oculus.[25]

Humanity, a collaboration between Mizuguchi and the designer Yugo Nakamura, launched on 16 May 2023 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Steam, with optional PlayStation VR2, PlayStation VR and PC VR modes.[9] Lumines Arise, for which Mizuguchi was executive producer, launched on 11 November 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Steam with optional support for PS VR2 and SteamVR-compatible headsets.[1] UploadVR reported that it was the first game in the series to come to VR headsets.[13] On 23 September 2026, at Meta Connect 2026, Enhance revealed Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities, a new mixed reality game in the Tetris Effect series that uses hand tracking and passthrough and turns the player's room into settings such as a deep-sea aquarium or a space station. It is scheduled for 2027 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S and as a launch title for Meta VR Glasses.[10]

Exhibitions and other roles

Mizuguchi co-curated Virtual Realms: Videogames Transformed, an exhibition organised by the Barbican with six commissioned works by game developers. Enhance's commission, Rezonance (2021), was made with Rhizomatiks. The exhibition premiered at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore, where it ran from 12 June 2021 to 9 January 2022 before touring.[26] His Keio faculty profile also lists him as co-founder and chief creative officer of EDGEof, a Tokyo studio, as a director of the XR Consortium and Media Ambition Tokyo, and as chief judge of the Entertainment Division of the Japan Media Arts Festival, a role the Cannes jury biography dates to 2007. The Producers Guild of America and The Hollywood Reporter selected him for their "Digital 50" in 2006.[4] In 2026 he served on the jury of the Compétition Immersive at the 79th Festival de Cannes, whose biography describes him as principal of Synesthesia Lab and a project professor at KMD.[3]
