Tetris Effect is a puzzle video game developed by the Japanese studios Monstars and Resonair and published by Enhance, built on a version of the classic falling-block game Tetris with reactive music and visuals.[1][2] It was directed by Takashi Ishihara and produced by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the designer of the synesthesia-themed games Rez and Lumines.[3]

The game first released on November 9, 2018 for PlayStation 4, with optional support for the PlayStation VR headset, and was later brought to several other platforms.[4] Critics singled out the Virtual Reality version, and the game won Best VR/AR Game at the 2018 Game Critics Awards.[5] Its title refers to the Tetris effect, a psychological phenomenon in which people who play the game at length see falling blocks in their imagination after they stop.[3]

Gameplay

Tetris Effect uses the standard rules of Tetris: seven tetromino shapes fall into a rectangular well, and the player rotates and positions them to complete horizontal lines, which then clear.[4] Around that core, every stage pairs the action with a piece of music and an animated backdrop, so that placing, rotating, and dropping pieces triggers sound effects and visual flourishes that sit within the track. Music, sound, and graphics react to the player's actions and speed up as the board fills.[4]

The single-player Journey mode runs through more than 30 stages, each with its own theme, music, and visuals, grouped into sets of increasing difficulty.[6] A central mechanic is the Zone, a meter that fills as the player clears lines; activating it stops time and lets the player clear well beyond the usual four lines at once before the board state resolves.[6] The game also includes a set of additional modes built around speed, marathon play, relaxation, and score chasing, more than ten in total alongside Journey.[6]

In Virtual Reality the playfield and the surrounding environment wrap around the player, who remains seated with a fixed viewpoint rather than moving through the space, which keeps the experience comfortable for most users.[1] On PlayStation VR2 the game adds an Eye tracking option: with a sufficiently full Zone meter, the player can enter the Zone by briefly closing and then opening their eyes instead of pressing a button.[6][7] Reviewers found the eye-based control natural in principle, though some preferred the button so as not to lose sight of the board.[8]

Development

Tetris Effect was produced by Tetsuya Mizuguchi through his studio Enhance, which he founded in 2014, and developed with Monstars and Resonair.[1][3] Mizuguchi had previously built games around the idea of synesthesia, the blending of sound and vision, in Rez (2001) and the Lumines series, and Tetris Effect applies the same approach to the falling-block format.[3] The game runs on Unreal Engine 4, with the later PlayStation 5 version upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 to take advantage of PlayStation VR2.[9]

The game was first revealed in June 2018 as a PlayStation announcement ahead of E3, with PlayStation VR support shown from the start.[10] The soundtrack was composed under the name Hydelic.[1]

Release

Tetris Effect launched first on PlayStation 4 in November 2018 and was subsequently ported to PC and other platforms. The PC release came to the Epic Games Store with optional support for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets, and could run at up to 4K with an uncapped frame rate.[2][1] A multiplayer-focused version, Tetris Effect: Connected, first launched on November 10, 2020 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Windows 10, then reached the other existing versions of the game as a free update on August 18, 2021; in 2023 it came to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2.[11][9][6]

The PlayStation VR2 version runs at 120 frames per second with a per-eye resolution of 2000 by 2040, and adds controller and headset haptic feedback for piece drops, stage transitions, and Zone entry and exit; on a standard PlayStation 5 it runs at 4K and 60 frames per second.[6][7] A physical PlayStation 5 edition of Tetris Effect: Connected was published by Limited Run Games in 2023.[7]

The 2021 Connected update was free for owners of the original game on platforms including PlayStation 4, Oculus Quest, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox, and added three multiplayer modes: Connected, a three-player cooperative mode in which players link their boards to fight AI-controlled bosses; Zone Battle, a one-on-one competitive mode using the Zone mechanic; and Score Attack, in which two players compete for the higher score.[11] The update also enabled cross-platform play through a shareable four-digit room code.[11] As of 2026 the game remains available across these platforms.[6]

Reception

Tetris Effect received highly positive reviews. The original PlayStation 4 version holds a Metacritic score of 89 out of 100 from 72 critics, and later versions scored similarly or higher, including 94 out of 100 on Nintendo Switch and 93 out of 100 on PlayStation 5.[12][9] PlayStation Official Magazine UK and Giant Bomb both gave the game a perfect score, and Destructoid rated it 9.5 out of 10, calling it a must-have for PlayStation VR owners and noting that the way the world wraps around the player in VR draws them further into the experience.[13][9]

Push Square described the game as a dazzling experience on a 4K television and a borderline spiritual one in PlayStation VR.[14] PlayStation Universe later called the PlayStation VR2 release the best way to experience the game.[8]

The game won Best VR/AR Game at the 2018 Game Critics Awards and was nominated in the same category at The Game Awards 2018, where the other nominees included Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Beat Saber, Firewall Zero Hour, and Moss.[5][15] It also received the Excellence in Musical Score award at the 2019 SXSW Gaming Awards and was named game of the year by some outlets, including Giant Bomb.[9]
