Tetris Effect is a puzzle video game developed by the Japanese studios Monstars Inc. and Resonair and published by Enhance, the studio founded by Tetsuya Mizuguchi. It pairs the standard rules of Tetris with music and visuals that react to the player's moves, and it first released on November 9, 2018 for PlayStation 4 with an optional PlayStation VR mode.[1][2] Takashi Ishihara directed the game and Mizuguchi, whose earlier games include Rez and Lumines, produced it.[1][3] Its title refers to the Tetris effect, the phenomenon in which people who play Tetris at length keep seeing falling blocks after they stop.[4] The game won Best VR/AR Game at the 2018 Game Critics Awards, and was later ported to Windows through the Epic Games Store on July 23, 2019, with optional Oculus Rift and HTC Vive support, and to Oculus Quest on May 14, 2020.[5][1]
Tetris Effect: Connected is the expanded, multiplayer edition of the game, developed by Monstars Inc., Resonair and Stage Games and produced and published by Enhance.[6][7] It adds cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes with cross-platform play to the single-player game.[2] Connected was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase on July 23, 2020 and launched on November 10, 2020 for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One and Windows 10, where it was available through Xbox Game Pass on day one.[6][1][8] The Xbox versions have no virtual reality mode; VR came to the Windows edition in a December 2020 patch, and on August 18, 2021 the Connected content reached the PlayStation VR, Meta Quest and Epic Games Store versions of Tetris Effect as a free update while the game also launched on Steam with SteamVR support.[9][10][11] A Nintendo Switch version followed on October 8, 2021, an Amazon Luna version on August 26, 2022, and a PlayStation 5 version with PlayStation VR2 support on February 22, 2023.[1][12]
As of September 2026 Connected is the current form of Tetris Effect on every platform. Enhance re-launched the game's official website in June 2026 and lists it as available on Amazon Luna, Meta Quest, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR, PlayStation VR2, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.[13] In September 2026, at Meta Connect 2026, Enhance and Meta announced Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities, a separate mixed reality version controlled by hand and due in 2027 for Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S and Meta VR Glasses.[14][15] Eurogamer placed Tetris Effect at number 1 in its 2024 "Eurogamer 100" list of the best games to play now.[16]
Gameplay
Tetris Effect uses the standard rules of Tetris: tetromino shapes fall into a rectangular well, and the player rotates and positions them to complete horizontal lines, which then clear. Around that core, every stage pairs the action with a piece of music and an animated backdrop, so that the sound effects and visuals for moving, rotating and dropping pieces are synchronized to each stage's music.[2][7] Journey mode, the single-player campaign, takes the player through a sequence of more than 30 stages, each with its own music and backdrop.[2][7] The Zone mechanic fills a meter as the player clears lines; activating it stops time so the player can keep placing pieces and clear well beyond the usual four lines at once before time resumes.[7] The Effect Modes are a set of stand-alone single-player modes grouped by mood, such as Relax, Focus, Adventurous and Classic; the Xbox launch of Connected shipped with more than ten of them.[2] As of 2026 the official site counts 17 Effect Modes and a 32-stage Journey.[7] The single-player side of Connected is the same game as the original Tetris Effect.[2]
The multiplayer modes added in the Connected release are:[2][11][17]
| Mode | Players | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Connected | 3 (co-op) | Three players link their playfields into one large board and fight CPU-controlled bosses; when the boards connect, lines must be completed across the combined width |
| Connected Vs | 3 vs 1 | The same co-op mode with a fourth human player controlling the boss |
| Zone Battle | 1 vs 1 | Standard competitive Tetris with the time-stopping Zone mechanic available for attacks and defense |
| Score Attack | 1 vs 1 | Two players compete on separate boards for the higher score, with no line attacks |
| Classic Score Attack | 1 vs 1 | Score Attack under old-school Tetris rules, including NTSC and PAL speed options, in the style of tournament play on the original console game |
Online play offers ranked matchmaking and Friend Matches created with a shareable four-digit Room ID that works across platforms; spectators can watch Friend Matches, and Enhance described spectating as the community's most-requested feature.[18][17] Local multiplayer on one screen is also supported.[2][19] Enhance runs a recurring "Weekend Ritual" community event in the game every weekend for 24 hours from Saturday at noon UTC.[7]
Virtual reality
The game can be played on a flat screen or in a headset. On PlayStation 4 the original release offered 3D visuals in PlayStation VR, while PlayStation 4 Pro owners playing on a television got 4K output at 60 frames per second.[3] On headsets the stage effects surround the player rather than staying on a screen: Destructoid's review of the PlayStation VR version wrote that "the way the world wraps around you in VR" further draws the player into the experience, and GameSpew's PlayStation VR2 review describes raindrops falling in front of the face and particles drifting past the eyes.[20][21] Game Informer's preview said that in VR the game "simulates its namesake like a beautiful, waking dream".[4]
The 2019 PC release on the Epic Games Store supports the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive with gamepads or their motion controllers, and on a monitor runs at 4K or higher with an uncapped frame rate when Vsync is disabled.[22][23] The Windows version of Connected supports VR through SteamVR or the Oculus PC runtime; at the time of the December 2020 patch Enhance listed official support for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive and said other SteamVR headsets should also work, and the Steam store lists the game as playable with or without a headset.[10][24][19] On Meta Quest the August 2021 update added a graphics option for Meta Quest 2 that lets the player favor frame rate or resolution.[11][18] After the Meta Quest 3 launched, Enhance shipped a Quest patch on October 17, 2023 that improved the appearance of the user interface on the new headset and recommended switching the graphics mode from Performance to Fidelity on Quest 3.[25]
The PlayStation VR2 version renders at 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye at 120 frames per second, against 4K at 60 frames per second in the flat PlayStation 5 mode.[12] With eye tracking enabled in the options, the player can enter the Zone by closing and then opening their eyes instead of pressing a button.[12] The headset's haptics fire on stage transitions and on entering and leaving the Zone, and the DualSense and PS VR2 Sense controllers give feedback for piece movement, drops and transitions.[26] In its review, PlayStation Universe found the eye-based Zone trigger "oddly more natural" than the button but advised against playing with the Sense controllers, which it said caused accidental rotations and hard drops, recommending the DualSense d-pad instead.[27]
Development
Tetris Effect was produced by Enhance and developed by Monstars Inc. and Resonair.[1] Mizuguchi had previously built games around synesthesia, the blending of sound and vision, in Rez and the Lumines series, and Game Informer's preview compared the way light, color and sound compete for attention in Tetris Effect to Lumines.[3][4] Sony revealed the game on June 6, 2018 as the first of its Countdown to E3 announcements, with a PlayStation VR mode promised from the start for a "Fall 2018" release on PlayStation 4.[1][3] Elite players got a playable demo at the Classic Tetris World Championship in Portland, Oregon on October 19-21, 2018, before the November 9 launch.[1] At GDC 2019 producer Mizuguchi, producer Mark MacDonald and director Takashi Ishihara gave a talk on how the team had revisited the franchise.[1] The game runs on Unreal Engine.[7]
The soundtrack is by Hydelic. It received two BAFTA nominations, for Audio Achievement and Music, in April 2019, won Excellence in Musical Score at the 2019 SXSW Gaming Awards, and was released on Bandcamp and other music platforms on May 28, 2020.[1][28]
For Connected, Stage Games joined the team to provide coding and networking support for the online modes.[6] In the Xbox Wire announcement Mizuguchi wrote that players had asked to share the game with family and friends since the original release and that building multiplayer during a period of global isolation "felt like a worthy challenge"; in the press release he said of the original that "people just 'got it' on every level".[2][6] In the Meta Quest Blog post for the VR launch, the studio described adding online play for up to four players as "a challenge of balancing processing speed with gorgeous presentation" while holding frame rates in VR.[11]
Version 2.0 arrived on all platforms on February 21, 2023, the day before the PlayStation 5 release. It added a single-player Classic Score Attack mode with NTSC and PAL speed options, a Zone Marathon mode, Endless options for the Master and Purify modes, and on Nintendo Switch a vertical TATE mode that turns the display to put the playfield in portrait orientation.[25][29][12] Enhance's public patch history runs from version 1.2.8 in January 2022 through 2.0.2, whose last platform-specific releases were for Quest on October 17, 2023 and Steam on December 13, 2023; no later patches are listed as of September 2026.[25]
Release
Tetris Effect launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR on November 9, 2018.[1] The PC version arrived on July 23, 2019 as an Epic Games Store exclusive with optional Oculus Rift and HTC Vive support, 4K and ultrawide monitor support, a US $40 price and a 20% launch discount that ran until August 6, 2019; buyers in the launch window also received a free DLC pack with a seven-track sampler of the Hydelic soundtrack.[22][23] A standalone Oculus Quest version followed on May 14, 2020.[1]
Connected began as an Xbox and Windows 10 exclusive: Enhance said at the announcement that the multiplayer expansion would come to the PlayStation 4, Epic Games Store and Oculus Quest versions as a free update in summer 2021.[6] A multiplayer beta for PlayStation and Epic Games Store owners (invite-only on Quest and Steam) opened on June 23, 2021 with a scheduled end of July 5; UploadVR reported it ran until July 12. The update, first targeted at late July, was moved to August 18.[17][30] The Steam launch carried a 25% discount for two weeks and included the Digital Deluxe content (a seven-track Hydelic soundtrack sampler, wallpapers and avatars) at no extra charge; the Steam store and Enhance's own timeline list the Steam date as August 17, 2021.[18][19][1] The Meta Quest version was priced at US $29.99 for new buyers at the time of the update.[11]

The Party Edition, released for Amazon Luna on October 23, 2025, contains only the local multiplayer modes, adds Mystery Battle, a last-player-standing mode for up to four players with random hazards, and works with Luna's GameNight feature, in which phones scanned in through a QR code become the controllers. It is included for Prime members and Luna Premium subscribers in the countries where Luna operates.[32]

Competitive play and events
Enhance and The Tetris Company run official online tournaments in the game. Enhance describes the 2022 Tri-Effect-A World Championship as the largest official Tetris tournament to that point, with more than 1,000 players from over 40 countries.[26] The Tetris Effect: Connected World Championship 2023 ran as a series of one-day events on Start.gg: Connected Vs 3v3 teams on October 7, Score Attack on October 21, Classic Score Attack on October 28, Zone Battle on November 4 and a Tri-Effect-A grand finale across all three modes on November 11, 2023, with Hyperkin and APMEX as sponsors.[35] For the 40th anniversary of Tetris in 2024, the game was playable at the Enhance booth at the Classic Tetris World Championship in Pasadena on June 7-9, and the Tetris Block Party from July 19 to August 3, 2024 included Zone Battle and Classic Score Attack tournaments in Connected alongside other Tetris titles.[36]
Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities
Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities is a new mixed reality title in the Tetris Effect series, revealed during the Meta Connect 2026 keynote on September 23, 2026.[15][14] Like the original, it is developed by Monstars Inc. and Resonair and published by Enhance.[14][37] Enhance states that it is coming in 2027 for the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets and as a launch title for Meta VR Glasses, the headset Meta announced at the same event; Meta's announcement names Meta VR Glasses as its platform and 2027 as its release window.[14][15]
The game is played with the hands, with no controllers required, and uses hand tracking and passthrough video. According to Meta, it uses the geometry of the player's room together with lighting, visual effects and the passthrough camera to change the surroundings during play.[15][14] Enhance says the room transforms into settings such as a deep-sea aquarium and a remote space station as the player builds "gateways to other dimensions that blur the line between the real and the virtual", and calls the game "a mind-blowing reinvention of Tetris Effect".[14][38] UploadVR, in its roundup of games announced for Meta VR Glasses, called it "a hand-controlled, room-aware mixed reality version of Tetris Effect".[39]
As of September 25, 2026, Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities has been announced but not released. No exact release date or price has been given; the Meta store lists it as coming soon, and Enhance said it would show more of the game later.[14][40]
Reception
Tetris Effect (2018)
The original PlayStation 4 version holds a Metacritic score of 89 out of 100 from 72 critic reviews.[41] PlayStation Official Magazine UK gave it 100, writing that "Tetris Effect and PS VR go together like ham and eggs".[41] Destructoid's Jordan Devore rated it 9.5 out of 10 and called it "a must-have for PlayStation VR owners", noting some loss of crispness against a television but judging that the way the world wraps around the player in VR more than makes up for it.[20] Push Square's hands-on preview described it as a "borderline spiritual experience" in PlayStation VR.[42]
The game won Best VR/AR Game at the 2018 Game Critics Awards, the Best of E3 awards, where it was credited to Resonair, Enhance and Monstars Inc. for PlayStation VR.[5] It was nominated in the same category at The Game Awards 2018 alongside Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Beat Saber, Firewall Zero Hour and Moss; Astro Bot Rescue Mission won.[43][44] Enhance's timeline records game of the year awards and nominations in December 2018 from outlets including IGN, GameSpot, Game Informer, Polygon, Eurogamer, Giant Bomb, EDGE and Shacknews, and the 2019 PC press release counted "60+ awards and nominations" including 2018 Game of the Year from Giant Bomb and Eurogamer.[1][22] The soundtrack won Excellence in Musical Score at the 2019 SXSW Gaming Awards.[28]

Reviews of the Xbox launch version praised the multiplayer expansion, with Metacritic's summary of the Xbox Series X reviews quoting a critic who called the multiplayer additions "excellently designed".[45] Destructoid's Noelle Warner, reviewing the Meta Quest version after the August 2021 update, scored it 9 out of 10, recommending Connected mode to more relaxed players because it gives them more leeway and noting short matchmaking waits; her main caveat was that it is "still Tetris" without reinventing the mechanics.[46] NME's Alan Wen, reviewing on Switch, wrote that there is "a magic to seeing players' blocks hovering over one another" in Connected mode and that the mode's harder bosses make teamwork essential.[47]
The PlayStation VR2 version was reviewed as the best way to play. GameSpew's Kim Snaith gave it 9 out of 10 and called the VR presentation "a transcendental experience", with the caveat that anyone who takes no pleasure in ordinary Tetris will not be won over.[21] PlayStation Universe's John-Paul Jones scored it 10 out of 10, crediting the OLED panels and HDR output for markedly clearer visuals than the original PlayStation VR version and the headset haptics for stage transitions and Zone entry.[27] Enhance reported in January 2024 that the PS5 version's Metascore of 93 placed it second on Metacritic's list of the best PlayStation games of 2023.[48]
On Steam the game holds a "Very Positive" rating, with 94% of 5,636 user reviews positive as of September 2026.[19] Eurogamer's 2024 "Eurogamer 100", a ranking of the 100 best games that can be played on current hardware, listed Tetris Effect (2018) at number 1, ahead of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Outer Wilds; Enhance's timeline records the placing under the Connected name.[16][1] Enhance also states that EDGE ranked the game 29th in its October 2023 list of the 100 greatest games of the past 30 years, and that the game was featured with Rez Infinite in the Video Games and Music exhibition at the Philharmonie de Paris that opened in April 2026.[1][49]
