OhShape is a virtual reality rhythm game developed and published by the Spanish studio Odders Lab. Players move their whole body to pass through silhouettes cut into approaching walls, dodge obstacles and punch through walls in time with the music. The developer says the game was inspired by the Japanese TV show Hole in the Wall.[1][2]
The game entered Steam Early Access on August 15, 2019 and left it with version 1.0 on December 13, 2019.[3][4] Versions for Oculus Quest, Pico headsets and PlayStation VR followed in 2020. A revised edition, OhShape Ultimate, reached Quest and Pico as a free update in January 2023, then SteamVR and PlayStation VR2 in April 2024.[5][6] UploadVR named it the Best VR for Fitness of 2020 in its annual awards.[7]
Gameplay
Walls carrying cut-out poses travel toward the player to the beat of a song. The player has to fit through the shape, duck or dodge walls, punch through marked walls, and grab coins from the air.[1][8] Because the game cannot tell where a player's elbows and feet are, UploadVR noted, it "relies on your head and hands to inform the shape of your body".[8] Each song is a separate level, and higher difficulties call for faster movement and a wider range of shapes. In an October 2019 preview, TheGamer compared this level structure to Dance Dance Revolution.[9]
The current Steam release lists more than 40 stages across four difficulty levels, a cross-platform online leaderboard, a Party Mode for competing with family and friends, a Practice Mode, and custom song support.[1] Party Mode and Practice Mode were added in version 1.3.0 in May 2020. Party Mode creates quick local leaderboards so a group can pass the headset between songs, and Practice Mode loops any section of a map.[10][11]
Version 0.7.0 in November 2019 added custom songs and new options: a Speed setting, an accuracy setting, a No Fail mode and a Small Room mode.[3] An April 2020 update added a Beginner difficulty to every official song and a calibration mode in which players set their height.[12]
Fitness album
The free Power Up fitness album, released in April 2024, has six sessions at two difficulty levels.[13] The PlayStation listing names the sessions Leg Burner, Arm Assault, Shoulders Up, Endurancer, Body Blast and All Out.[14]
Level editor
With the 1.0 release, Odders Lab published an open-source level editor for building maps to players' own music.[4] The editor's source code is hosted on GitHub under the GNU General Public License v3.0.[15]
Development
OhShape was the first game from Odders Lab, which now presents itself under the name Odders.[16][17] The studio has its headquarters in Seville, and the local business outlet Sevilla Negocios reported that its founders came from hardware design and IoT products.[18] In a fifth-anniversary post, the team said it had wanted a rhythm game played with the whole body that was simple to understand and fun with family and friends. The post names the Japanese show Brain Wall and the arcade game Dance Dance Revolution as inspirations.[16]
The first public build, version 0.4.6, came out on August 15, 2019. Early Access updates added songs, mixed reality capture support through LIV (in beta), English and Spanish language support, a tutorial and HTC Vive Cosmos support.[3] Version 1.0 added four songs, a Christmas mode, haptic improvements, Index controller support and better support for the HTC Vive and Vive Cosmos.[4]
Post-launch updates
Odders Lab kept adding free content after launch and sold two paid music packs.

A Viveport version also existed; version 1.1.1 included fixes for the Steam and Viveport builds.[19] When OhShape Ultimate arrived on Quest and Pico in January 2023, Odders Lab told UploadVR that the Steam and PlayStation versions would "require some extra work". The Steam version received the Ultimate update with the Power Up update on April 18, 2024.[5][13] MIXED reported a price of US$19.99 for the PlayStation VR2 version, the same as the current US Steam price.[6][1]
Reception
UploadVR's Jamie Feltham gave the game four out of five stars in February 2020. He called it "a smart, straight, no-nonsense rhythm game with an energetic core mechanic and plenty of options" and "a genuinely authentic fitness game". He also said the initial track list "could be more inspiring" and that in demanding sequences it was "a little too tough to tell what the next shape will be".[8] In an October 2019 Early Access preview, TheGamer's Eric Switzer wrote that the game is "as cool as it sounds" and that players have to practice the songs, because hesitating before a shape causes them to overcorrect.[9]
UploadVR gave OhShape its Best VR for Fitness award for 2020; the other nominees were Supernatural, Beat Saber DLC, VRWorkout, Until You Fall and FitXR. It said "the range of movement and fun you can have in OhShape warranted recognizing it" in a category it described as very tough to decide.[7] Metacritic lists two critic reviews and no Metascore for the game.[33] In 2022 Sevilla Negocios called OhShape the studio's "primer éxito" (first success).[18]
Legacy
Odders Lab wrote that seeing how much OhShape helped people stay fit during the 2020 lockdown inspired it to put more effort into fitness-oriented games.[16] The studio went on to make Les Mills Bodycombat, Les Mills XR Dance and Chess Club. Its website lists OhShape for Meta Quest, Steam, PICO and PlayStation VR2.[17]
