Les Mills Bodycombat (stylized LES MILLS BODYCOMBAT; listed on the Steam and PlayStation stores as LES MILLS XR BODYCOMBAT since its October 2023 mixed reality update) is a virtual reality fitness application developed by the Spanish studio Odders Lab under license from the New Zealand fitness company Les Mills. It adapts the BODYCOMBAT group-exercise program, a martial-arts-inspired cardio class taught in gyms, into a target-punching workout coached by the program's directors Dan Cohen and Rachael Newsham. The app launched on the Quest Store on February 3, 2022 at US$29.99.[1]

Meta named it Best App of 2022 in its Best of Quest awards.[2] The app was in the Pico 4 launch lineup in October 2022, came to PlayStation VR2 on February 22, 2023, and reached PC VR through Steam on April 14, 2025.[3][4][5] A free October 2023 update added a mixed reality mode built for the Meta Quest 3 and rebranded the app with the "XR" name; Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated the mode during the Meta Connect 2023 keynote.[6][7]

Unlike subscription-based VR fitness services such as Supernatural and FitXR, the app is sold for a one-time price and funds continued development through paid downloadable content; five DLC packs and a monthly Challenge Pass had been released by November 2025.[8][9][10] Odders Lab stated in October 2025 that the app had sold more than one million copies and logged more than seven million workouts.[11]

Gameplay

Each session is a guided workout rather than a level. Targets fly toward the player in time with the music and are punched with the tracked motion controllers, while obstacle zones require the player to duck or squat; other cues call for high and low punches or holding the arms out in a T-pose.[12] The move set draws on boxing, kung fu, karate, kickboxing, taekwondo, capoeira and muay thai, the disciplines behind the gym program.[13] Knee strikes are performed without body tracking: the player grabs a high target with both hands and pulls it down against a raised knee.[13] Later updates added elbow strikes, battle-rope sections and uppercuts.[14]

Cohen and Newsham appear as pre-recorded coaches who explain technique before a session and give cues during it. A score system awards points for effort and technique, with direct feedback on punch power and precision, a leaderboard for competing against other players' scores, and an algorithmic recommendation system that suggests the next workout.[1][13][12] The app asks for height, weight, birth year and gender to personalize its suggestions and shows a calorie estimate.[15][12]

At launch the workout library covered boxing-fitness, speed, core and lower-body sessions from beginner to advanced level, set in environments including a Martian desert, a snowy tundra, ancient Rome and a Tokyo-inspired neon city.[1] The launch announcement listed 25 training sessions; UploadVR's launch coverage counted 30 routines of 5 to 20 minutes each.[1][12] The catalog has grown through free updates and paid packs: the Steam and PlayStation store listings describe 50 workout plans, and Odders Lab's product page counts more than 100 workouts across the base app and its five DLCs.[4][16]

The mixed reality mode, introduced in October 2023, uses the headset's passthrough view so that targets and walls appear in the player's own room instead of a virtual arena. Les Mills said the mode allows safer and larger movements than full VR, and on the Quest 3 the player can switch between VR and MR views.[6][17][7] MIXED reported the MR mode as available on Quest and Pico headsets.[18] On PlayStation VR2 the app requires the Sense controllers and a play area of at least 6 ft 7 in by 6 ft 7 in (about 2 m by 2 m); the Pico listing classifies it as a standing, single-player app.[4][19]

Development

Odders Lab, a studio based in Seville, Spain, had previously released the rhythm game OhShape and the app Chess Club on Quest before it partnered with Les Mills International on a VR version of BODYCOMBAT.[1][13] Les Mills' program directors Rachael Newsham and Dan Cohen worked with the studio on choreography, and the team ran repeated playtests with users of different fitness and gaming levels to balance the intensity and selection of the workouts.[13] Odders Lab business director Jaime Pichardo said the studio "grappled right to the edge of where fitness stops and gaming begins" and named safety, the Guardian boundary and headset comfort as the three main design constraints.[13] Les Mills CEO Clive Ormerod framed the app as a new distribution channel for the company rather than a replacement for its live classes.[13]

Les Mills announced the app in Auckland on February 3, 2022, the day it went on sale on the Quest Store.[1] Odders Lab followed with a second licensed title, Les Mills XR Dance, on Quest in December 2023.[14] By May 2024 the studio had shipped eight content and feature updates for Bodycombat in about two years; it stated that free updates would continue alongside the paid packs.[20][21] Odders Lab's product page notes that the company received a grant under the 2021-2027 Andalusia ERDF program for a "Les Mills XR+" project.[16]

In October 2025 Odders Lab announced an investment of undisclosed size from CaixaBank's DayOne and Axon Partners Group to move into augmented reality and smart glasses. Its CEO is Ana Molina; the company said it was preparing launches on Apple Vision Pro and Google's XR platform, and cited Bodycombat's sales of more than one million units and more than seven million workouts.[11][22]

Name change and mixed reality update

On October 11, 2023, Les Mills launched "LES MILLS BODYCOMBAT XR" as a free automatic update for existing owners, adding the mixed reality mode and optimizations for the Quest 3. The price stayed at US$29.99.[6][17] Zuckerberg had shown the feature during the Meta Connect 2023 keynote, at which the Quest 3 was launched, saying that "the targets are going to come at you in your physical location".[7][25] The Steam and PlayStation listings use the name LES MILLS XR BODYCOMBAT, while the Meta store listing is titled "LES MILLS BODYCOMBAT: Fitness workouts" and the PICO listing "Les Mills BODYCOMBAT".[24][4][26][19]

Bundles

In May 2024 Meta sold US-only hardware bundles that included the app: a 128 GB Quest 3 with Active Straps at US$539.99 and a 128 GB Quest 2 with the Quest 2 Active Pack at US$229.99, both through June 30, 2024.[27] The Meta store also offers a BODYCOMBAT Ultimate Bundle containing the base app plus the Power Strike, Focus Mode, BODYCOMBAT 100 and Bonus Club packs, and the PlayStation Store sells an Ultimate Fitness Pack with the base app and all five packs for US$49.99.[28][8]

Updates and downloadable content

Free updates added content through 2024, including a January 25, 2024 update with five workouts, the elbow strike move and a Volcano environment.[14] A monthly Challenge Pass launched on November 15, 2024, with an exclusive challenge workout in a themed arena, a global leaderboard and social avatars; the first pass was free to owners through November 30, the December pass cost 0.99 EUR and later passes 4.99 EUR each.[9]

Paid DLC began on Quest in May 2024 and was later brought to Steam and PlayStation VR2. Odders Lab described the November 13, 2025 Steam and PlayStation release of Focus Mode as completing the rollout of every pack on those platforms, and XR Source reported it as the final pack in the lineup.[29][30]

Alongside the Steam launch in April 2025, Odders Lab announced a free PlayStation VR2 update with 16 workouts, the elbow strike, the Space Station, Highlands and Volcano environments, a redesigned interface and a combo system, and said the remaining Quest packs would follow on PlayStation during 2025.[5][18] At that point the studio put usage at more than six million completed workouts across 75 countries.[37]

Reception

UploadVR's Jamie Feltham called the Quest launch version "polished, effective and fun" and welcomed the absence of a subscription, but found that it lacked the novel ideas of the studio's earlier OhShape and criticized the standard gym music, an over-eager calorie counter and coaching lines that sometimes fell out of sync with performance.[12] WayTooManyGames' Leo Faria scored the Quest 2 version 8.0 out of 10, praising the rhythm-game core while objecting to unskippable instruction segments, awkward mid-workout menu navigation and plain backgrounds.[38] For the PlayStation VR2 version, Impulse Gamer's Edwin Millheim gave 4.4 out of 5, and Hobby Consolas scored it 78 out of 100, the only critic review counted on Metacritic, which has no Metascore for the title.[15][23]

Meta's developer blog reported a 4.7-star average from more than 2,000 ratings as of March 23, 2023; as of September 2026 the Meta store shows 4.5 stars from about 5,300 reviews, the PICO Store 88 percent positive from 933 reviews, and Steam a "Very Positive" rating with 85 percent of 121 reviews positive.[13][26][19][24] Les Mills describes the app as the world's best-selling VR fitness app, and Odders Lab's product page calls it the top-rated fitness app on the Meta Quest Store; both are the companies' own claims.[6][16]
