FitXR is a subscription-based virtual reality fitness app developed by FitXR Limited, a London company founded by Sam Cole and Sameer Baroova.[1] It grew out of the boxing workout game BOXVR, which entered Steam Early Access in 2017 and which FitXR replaced on the Oculus Quest with a rebuilt app on July 30, 2020.[2][3][4] The app presents instructor-led classes in which the player hits targets, ducks under obstacles and follows on-screen cues in time with music, and it tracks scores, streaks and estimated calories.
FitXR moved from a one-time purchase to a monthly membership in April 2021 and has since added workout "studios" beyond boxing: HIIT, Dance, Sculpt, Combat, a licensed Zumba studio, the mixed reality game mode Slam, and, in April 2026, Flow.[5][6] As of September 2026 it is sold on Meta Quest headsets, on the Pico 4 and Pico Neo 3 Link in the UK, EU and Asia, and on the Samsung Galaxy XR, at US $12.99 per month or US $107.99 per year with a seven-day free trial.[7][8][9]
Gameplay
FitXR classes are choreographed by fitness instructors and led by an instructor avatar with voice guidance. In the original Box studio the player punches incoming orbs on the beat with jabs, hooks and uppercuts while squatting or weaving away from obstacles; the app shows real-time scoring during the class and a post-workout summary with leaderboards.[10][11] The 2020 rebuild introduced a "power streak" scoring system that rewards punch velocity: FitXR told VR Fitness Insider that jabs and crosses needed to reach 3.3 m/s and hooks and uppercuts 5.1 m/s to count toward the streak.[4] Custom playlists from BoxVR were deliberately dropped so that every class stays a professionally choreographed workout.[4][10]
Classes run from about six to sixty minutes and can be filtered by length and intensity.[3][10] Real-time multiplayer classes with voice chat returned with the April 2021 update, initially for up to seven people, and the HIIT studio launched on May 25, 2021, with three free introductory classes and group workouts for up to six.[5][12][13] Public multiplayer classes were announced in January 2025.[14]
Since January 2025 content is organised into quarterly seasons. The first, "Season 1: Arcadia", ran for three months, added the environment "The Deck" with Monorail, Glacier and Helios to follow, introduced Sidestep, Crouch and Jump moves, and issued two daily challenges; completing 20 in a month unlocked extra workouts and cosmetic rewards. The same update added custom workout playlists, league rankings and post-workout sharing.[15] Each season is published in three parts (Season 5, for example, consisted of "Games Room", "Chef's Table" and "Backyard Jungle"), and by September 2026 the help centre listed a seventh season.[16] A July 2026 update added "Journey", a recommendation system that suggests workouts from a member's goals, activity history, preferred studios, coaches and music, together with profile levels earned from accumulated Move Points, a daily streak counter with freeze days, reworked hit sounds and an underwater environment called Oceana.[17]
A free companion app for iOS and Android tracks progress; since March 2023 it can push completed workouts to Strava, and it can sync results to Apple Health.[18][19] Hand tracking across all studios on Meta Quest lets members train without controllers; FitXR notes that it works best in well-lit rooms and that controllers still give more precise tracking and haptic feedback, so scores may be lower with hands.[20][8]
Studios
FitXR calls each workout style a studio. The company's own studios page in September 2026 lists seven: Flow, Box, Combat, HIIT, Sculpt, Dance and Slam; the Zumba classes launched in November 2023 are listed separately on the homepage rather than as a studio.[21][22]
| Studio | Launched | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Box | July 30, 2020 (as BoxVR from 2017) | Rhythm boxing: jabs, hooks and uppercuts at targets on the beat, with squats and weaves[2][10] |
| Dance | November 5, 2020 | Instructor-led dance cardio with beat matching; launched as a free update with 60 minutes of classes alongside the Quest 2[23][3][5] |
| HIIT | May 25, 2021 | Interval training with instructor-led "Fitness Activity" classes and Formula One-styled "Reaction Activity" games[12][13] |
| Sculpt | January 2023 | Low-impact strength and conditioning drawing on barre, pilates and isometric holds; eight classes at launch[24] |
| Combat | January 16, 2023 | Cardio classes with moves from karate, Muay Thai, taekwondo and boxing; four classes at launch[24] |
| Zumba | November 2, 2023 | Licensed Zumba dance classes (32 at launch, beginner to expert) with a mixed reality option; instructors include Jeimy Bueno and Dahrio Wonder[25] |
| Slam | December 2023 | Mixed reality "active game" played in passthrough with timed and survival modes; playable with or without controllers[26] |
| Flow | April 2026 | Rhythm sequences in which the player smashes balloon-like targets with handheld bats while crouching, lunging and ducking under arches[6] |
Slam was first shown in beta on the Meta Quest 3 in December 2023 and demonstrated at CES in January 2024. It uses spatial sensing to turn the player's room into the play field, recommends roughly 10 ft by 10 ft of space, and offers a timed mode (hit as many cues as possible in a set time) and a survival mode with three lives and shrinking reaction windows.[26][27][28] In a March 2024 press release FitXR stated that Slam accounted for 25 percent of its user growth since December 2023, had a completion rate of nearly 90 percent, the highest of any studio, and that sessions including Slam ran 46 percent longer on average.[29] An October 2024 update brought every studio into mixed reality on the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S: the player ticks an MR option before a class and adjusts the blend of real and virtual surroundings with a slider in the pause menu.[30]
Flow was built quickly in early 2026 after Meta, following layoffs in its VR teams in January 2026, said it would stop adding content to the rival app Supernatural (in June 2026 Meta agreed to spin the app out to an independent company, Supernatural Health). Cole told UploadVR that the team interviewed many Supernatural power users and that a flow-style studio "came out so, so clearly as one of the top things that they wanted"; the studio launched on April 1, 2026, with FitXR saying it would treat it as iterative.[6][31]
Development
Company and BoxVR
FitXR Limited was incorporated in London on March 4, 2017, under the name FitAR Limited, with Sameer Ranjan Baroova and Samuel Christopher Stevely Cole as its founding directors; it became FitXR Limited on September 25, 2019.[32][1] Cole, who had worked in consulting and private equity, met Baroova at business school; Cole has been chief executive throughout.[33][4][6] Cherry Freeman, co-founding partner of Hiro Capital, joined the board in July 2020 and David Wu in March 2024.[1][34]
The company's first product, BoxVR, was built in Unity by the founders and freelance developers and sold on Steam Early Access in 2017 for about US $20.[3] It won VR Fitness Insider's 2017 fitness title of the year while still in early access.[35] In November 2018 FitXR raised a US $1.25 million seed round from Boost VC, Maveron and TenOneTen Ventures plus angel investors including John Vechey and Eytan Elbaz, reporting nearly 50,000 paying BoxVR users on Oculus and Steam.[36] BoxVR reached PlayStation VR on April 30, 2019, with 45 routines and 110 tracks, left early access on Steam on May 21, 2019, and launched the same day as an Oculus Quest launch title at US $29.99.[37][38][35]
In July 2020 the company closed a US $7.5 million Series A: US $6.3 million of equity led by Hiro Capital with Boost VC, Maveron and TenOneTen returning, plus a US $1.2 million innovation loan from Innovate UK.[34] TechCrunch reported at the time that FitXR had 20 employees and that BoxVR sold for US $29.99 with US $9.99 content packs on the Oculus Store, PlayStation Store and Steam.[39]
From BoxVR to FitXR
FitXR replaced BoxVR on the Oculus Quest on July 30, 2020, as a mandatory update rather than a separate title: the code was rewritten, the app got a new virtual gym, a cleaner interface and better hit detection for side jabs and uppercuts, it was free for BoxVR owners and US $29.99 for new buyers, and existing DLC carried over.[2][4] FitXR's help centre says BoxVR had become unstable and hard to maintain, which is why the company rebuilt it.[40] PC VR and PSVR versions of FitXR were promised but never shipped; BoxVR remains on sale for Oculus Rift, Steam and PlayStation VR without further updates, and a May 2023 help centre article says the company is not actively developing for any other platform, including PSVR and SteamVR, though it would like to add platforms after the launch of PlayStation VR2.[40][9]
Subscription model
On April 15, 2021, FitXR became a free download with a membership of US $9.99 or £7.99 per month, adding daily new classes, real-time multiplayer with voice chat, licensed music through a Warner Music deal and new environments; the HIIT studio followed in May. Existing owners kept their base app and purchased DLC, received 90 days of free membership and retained three free tutorial classes per studio. The company said Q4 2020 sales had grown 535 percent year on year and weekly active users had quadrupled since the Quest 2 launch.[5][41][42][13]
The change was unpopular with earlier buyers and the app's Oculus Store rating fell to three stars. In November 2021 Cole apologised, released all previous DLC packs free, restored a legacy interface that hides locked content and added one free full-length class a month, while keeping the subscription.[43] In September 2022 the company said subscribers had quadrupled over the previous twelve months.[44] For new members the price rose on September 1, 2023, to US $12.99 per month or US $107.99 per year (£9.99 / £83.99; €11.89 / €98.99), with existing subscribers kept on their old rate; FitXR cited rising development costs.[45] The help centre in February 2026 listed US $12.99 / $107.99, £9.99 / £83.99, €12.99 / €107.99, A$18.99 / A$161.99 and C$16.99 / C$139.99.[7]
Instructors have included the Olympic boxing champion Nicola Adams and the wrestler and disability fitness trainer Zion Clark.[44][46]
Release
| Platform | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Steam (SteamVR) | 2017 (Early Access); May 21, 2019 (full release) | As BoxVR; still on sale, no longer updated[3][38][40] |
| PlayStation VR | April 30, 2019 | As BoxVR; still on sale, no longer updated[37][40] |
| Oculus Quest | May 21, 2019 (BoxVR); July 30, 2020 (FitXR) | Launch title as BoxVR; replaced by FitXR in 2020. Quest 1 members were moved to a frozen free library of about 300 classes in September 2023[35][2][47] |
| Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S | Ongoing | Main platform; mixed reality for all studios on Quest 3 and 3S since October 2024[48][30] |
| Pico 4, Pico Neo 3 Link | March 23, 2023 | UK, EU and Asia, where Pico headsets are sold; 30 days free membership until April 30, 2023[49][48] |
| Samsung Galaxy XR (Android XR) | October 2025 | Listed among the headset's launch apps via Google Play[50][8] |
FitXR ended support for the original Quest in 2023 because Meta stopped supporting the headset and because the app already ran poorly on it; paying Quest 1 members were switched in September 2023 to a free version with about 300 classes across the Box, Dance, HIIT, Combat and Sculpt studios that receives no new content.[51][47] The Pico launch coincided with the Sculpt and Combat studios and was FitXR's first platform beyond Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro.[49][48] FitXR's Google Play listing was among the apps spotted ahead of the Galaxy XR announcement in October 2025, and UploadVR listed it as available on the headset in January 2026.[52][8]
Reception
UploadVR's Jamie Feltham scored the 2020 Quest relaunch 3 out of 5. He welcomed the more forgiving hit detection, clearer squat cues, the playlist filters and the new studio look, but criticised the removal of custom playlists and live multiplayer (replaced at the time by asynchronous ghost data), the single environment, calorie estimates he called misleading and a combo system that punished pacing.[10] On the Meta Horizon Store the app is rated 4.2 out of 5 from about 14,000 reviews.[53]
After a year's subscription on a Quest 2, MIXED's Josef Erl in July 2023 called FitXR "arguably the most comprehensive fitness program in virtual reality", citing the seven new classes a week, the spatial demonstrations by trainer avatars and the warm-ups and cool-downs, while faulting the boxing's weak hit feedback, voice guidance that gets lost mid-class, the 2 m by 3 m space some classes need and the price increase.[46] Tom's Guide's Mike Prospero, after two weeks on a Meta Quest 3 in May 2025, found most classes lasted 5 to 10 minutes and worked the upper body more than the legs, since scoring depends on the controllers; dance classes gave less precise guidance than the target-hitting studios, and sweat on the facial interface and headset weight kept his sessions to about 30 minutes.[54]
A peer-reviewed crossover study published in PLOS ONE in December 2024 compared a FitXR boxing class of about 12 minutes on a Meta Quest 2 with the same routine on a flat screen in 17 healthy adults. Oxygen consumption was on average 1.85 ml/kg/min higher in VR, enjoyment and positive affect were significantly higher and negative affect lower; one author had received contract research funding from FitXR, which the paper says had no role in the study.[55]
