The Meta Quest 2 (originally sold as the Oculus Quest 2) is a standalone virtual reality head-mounted display developed by Reality Labs, the VR division of Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook). Facebook announced it on September 16, 2020 and released it on October 13, 2020, starting at US$299, which was US$100 less than the original Oculus Quest.[1] The headset uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor with 6 GB of RAM and a single fast-switch LCD panel with 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye, which Facebook said was 50% more pixels than the original Quest.[1][2] It runs games and apps on its own, and it can also play PC VR content over a USB cable with Oculus Link or over Wi-Fi with Air Link.[1][3]

The Quest 2 sold far more units than any earlier Oculus headset. Facebook said in March 2021 that it had outsold all of its predecessors combined, and market research firm IDC estimated that it accounted for 78% of all AR and VR headsets shipped worldwide in 2021.[4][5] After Facebook became Meta, the headset was renamed Meta Quest 2 from early 2022.[6] Meta announced its discontinuation at Meta Connect in September 2024, alongside the Meta Quest 3S, which took over the US$299 entry price.[7] Meta no longer sells the headset, but it still receives system software: Meta lists security updates for the Quest 2 until at least December 2027, and the Meta Horizon OS 2.7 release of August 2026 was pushed to Quest 2 headsets along with newer Quest models.[8][9]

Reviewed 17 October 2026. New October 2026 additions (security update period, release-note entries through Horizon OS 2.7, product-page status, Road to VR spec comparison, Steam Link requirements, Guardian space, model number, three tracking studies) checked against the cited sources About review dates.

History

The headset with its two Touch controllers, in its original Oculus branding

Announcement and launch

The headset was unveiled at Facebook Connect on September 16, 2020, with pre-orders opening the same day. It shipped on October 13, 2020 in a 64 GB model for US$299 and a 256 GB model for US$399.[10][11] Pre-orders were taken through the Oculus website and retailers including Best Buy, GameStop, Target and Walmart in the United States, Currys PC World and FNAC Darty in Europe, Amazon, and Japanese retailers such as Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera.[12]

The Quest 2 replaced the black exterior of the original Quest with a matte white finish, which made the two models easy to tell apart in stores.[13] It was the first commercial device to use Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 platform.[14]

Facebook account requirement

In August 2020, Oculus announced that from October 2020 anyone using an Oculus device for the first time would have to log in with a Facebook account. Existing users could keep separate Oculus accounts until the end of 2022, after which full functionality would require a Facebook account.[15] The Quest 2 was therefore the first Oculus headset that required a Facebook account to operate, which UploadVR's review flagged as a privacy concern for some buyers.[16]

On September 2, 2020, Facebook paused sales of Oculus headsets in Germany, calling it a temporary and proactive measure while it worked with German authorities. Existing retail stock could still be sold, but Facebook said it would not restock.[17] Germany's Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) opened a proceeding in December 2020. In November 2022 it said it would, for the time being, raise no objections to sales of the Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro in Germany after Meta introduced separate Meta accounts; it also said it would keep monitoring the company.[18]

Meta rolled out Meta accounts in August 2022. A Meta account can be created with an email address, so a Facebook login is no longer required to use the headset.[19]

Foam interface recall and 128 GB model

On July 27, 2021, Facebook Technologies recalled the removable foam facial interfaces sold with the headset and separately, in coordination with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recall covered about 4 million units in the United States and about 172,600 in Canada. The company had received about 5,716 reports of facial skin irritation, including rashes, swelling, burning, itching, hives and bumps, and about 45 reports of consumers who needed medical attention. Owners were offered a free silicone cover.[20]

Facebook paused Quest 2 sales at the same time and announced that a 128 GB model would replace the 64 GB model at the same US$299 price from August 24, 2021, with a silicone cover included in the box of each new headset. The 256 GB model stayed at US$399.[21]

Rename to Meta Quest 2

Following Facebook's rename to Meta in October 2021, Andrew Bosworth, then incoming chief technology officer, announced that the company would move away from the Oculus brand for its hardware. "Starting in early 2022, you'll start to see the shift from Oculus Quest from Facebook to Meta Quest," he wrote; the Oculus Quest 2 became the Meta Quest 2 and the Oculus app became the Meta Quest app.[6] Bosworth later said that "retiring" the Oculus brand was too strong a term, since it would remain in use for developer tools and Oculus Studios.[6]

Price changes

Meta raised the price of the Quest 2 in August 2022, saying that "the costs to make and ship our products have been on the rise." Buyers between August 1 and December 31, 2022 received Beat Saber at no extra cost.[22] Meta later lowered the price several times.

In April 2024 Meta also cut the prices of several Quest 2 accessories: the Elite Strap to US$25, the Elite Strap with Battery to US$45, the Fit Pack to US$20 and the carrying case from US$45 to US$20.[24]

Discontinuation

At Meta Connect on September 25, 2024, Meta said that "Quest 2 and Quest Pro will no longer be available when stock runs out or at the end of the year, whichever comes first." The Meta Quest 3S launched at the same event at US$299 for 128 GB.[7][25] As of October 2026, Meta's Quest 2 product page states that the "Meta Quest 2 is no longer available" and directs buyers to the Meta Quest 3S, listed from US$349.99.[26] Road to VR noted that the 3S relies on older Fresnel lenses and displays with the same resolution as the Quest 2.[27]

Software support after discontinuation

Asked in an Instagram AMA, reported by MIXED in May 2024, how long the Quest 2 would be supported, Andrew Bosworth, Meta's chief technology officer, gave no date. He said support continues for years after the last unit is sold, because the company wants people who bought one on the last day "to have a full life with it."[28] Meta's security update policy says its listed devices receive security updates for at least five years from when they were first sold in the United States. It gives December 2027 for the Quest 2, the same date as the Quest Pro, and says it will publish more information if the period is extended.[8]

Meta kept shipping system updates to the Quest 2 after sales ended. Every general release in Meta's release notes from December 2024 to the Horizon OS 2.7 release (week of August 17, 2026) lists the Quest 2 among the headsets it is pushed to, including Horizon OS 2.1 in February 2026, which introduced the new version numbering.[9] Some features skip the older headset. Tracked physical keyboard support was removed from the Quest 2 and Quest Pro in the update of December 2024, and the gamepad emulation added in Horizon OS 2.7 is listed for Quest 3 and 3S only.[9]

Some new games no longer run on it. Batman: Arkham Shadow from Camouflaj was scheduled in September 2024 to launch on October 22, 2024 for the Quest 3 and Quest 3S only, and Road to VR described it as a Quest 3 exclusive.[29] In September 2024, UploadVR wrote that Meta had shipped an estimated 20 to 30 million Quest 2 units, and that many other VR apps would likely support it "for many years to come."[7]

Design and hardware

The Quest 2 weighs 503 g, about 10% less than the original Quest (571 g).[10][30] It ships with a soft fabric head strap. The optional Elite Strap, which Road to VR said cost US$50 extra, and the Elite Strap with Battery were sold separately, and the Fit Pack added facial interfaces for wider and narrower faces.[31][12] Facebook said the Elite Strap with Battery doubles playtime.[12]

A teardown published by Road to VR showed a fan-shaped heatsink attached directly to the processor and an electromagnetic shield that also works as passive cooling, a denser layout than in the original Quest.[30] iFixit called the headset "decently repairable, though it takes a while to get to the all-important battery".[32]

Display and optics

The headset uses one fast-switch LCD panel shared by both eyes, with 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye.[2] The original Quest had two OLED panels at 1440 x 1600 per eye.[31] In UploadVR's review, the higher resolution made the screen door effect nearly imperceptible, although the LCD produced less rich shadows than the original's OLED displays.[16] iFixit described the panel as "basically a smartphone LCD display with the non-important parts blacked out".[32]

Meta lists supported refresh rates of 60, 72, 80, 90 and 120 Hz.[2] At launch, 90 Hz was available only as an experimental feature.[10] The v23 software update in November 2020 made 90 Hz the default across system software and let developers ship apps that run at 90 Hz.[33] The v28 update in April 2021 added an experimental 120 Hz mode, and Oculus said developers would soon be able to ship store apps that run at 120 Hz natively.[3]

The headset uses Fresnel lenses.[32] Instead of the continuous interpupillary distance adjustment of the original Quest, the lenses snap into three positions: 58 mm, 63 mm and 68 mm.[10] Meta says its Quest headsets best accommodate IPDs between 56 and 70 mm.[34] Meta describes the headset as glasses compatible.[2] Meta does not publish an official field of view figure for the Quest 2; Oculus declined to give Road to VR an official figure but said the field of view was equivalent to the original Quest's.[31] Road to VR's 2024 comparison table lists the field of view as 96 degrees horizontal by 90 degrees vertical and the angular resolution as 20 pixels per degree.[27]

Processor and memory

The Quest 2 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 with 6 GB of RAM.[1] At its announcement in December 2019, Qualcomm said the XR2 delivered twice the CPU and GPU performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 used in the original Quest, more than 11 times faster AI processing, six times the video resolution support and four times the video bandwidth.[35] Its GPU is the Adreno 650, which UploadVR put at 1.2 teraflops; many later Quest Store titles supported only the Quest 2 because the original Quest was not powerful enough to run them.[36] The headset has no memory card slot, so storage cannot be expanded.[21]

In June 2023, Meta announced a software update that gave the Quest 2 up to 26% more CPU performance and up to 19% more GPU speed, and enabled Dynamic Resolution Scaling.[23]

Tracking and passthrough

Four cameras on the front of the headset provide inside-out tracking of the headset and controllers with six degrees of freedom, with no external sensors. The same cameras are used for passthrough video and hand tracking.[30][32] The headset uses the Guardian System to mark the boundaries of the play space. Meta's setup guide asks for a clear area of at least 2 by 2 meters (6.5 by 6.5 feet) for a roomscale boundary and offers a Stationary mode for seated or standing play in smaller spaces.[37]

The passthrough view is black and white and fairly low resolution; Road to VR lists it at 4 pixels per degree.[27][38] In July 2021, an experimental Passthrough API in the v31 SDK let developers blend the camera view with virtual content, style it and render it onto custom geometry, first in Unity.[38] In April 2022, Meta announced Hand Tracking 2.0, a "re-architected computer vision and machine learning approach" that improved tracking of overlapping and fast-moving hands; the original Quest did not receive it.[39]

Controllers

The Quest 2 ships with redesigned Oculus Touch controllers with a larger thumb rest and stronger haptics. Facebook said their battery life is up to four times that of the original Quest's controllers.[12][31] Each controller runs on one AA battery.[40] Road to VR noted that the controllers are not compatible with the original Quest or the Oculus Rift S.[31]

Audio

Speakers are built into the head strap arms, and there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack.[2][11] iFixit noted that the rotating arms allow bigger speakers placed closer to the ears.[32] Road to VR called the audio passable, while UploadVR found it deeper and richer than on the original Quest.[31][16]

Battery

The internal lithium-ion battery is rated at 3,640 mAh, the same capacity as in the original Quest.[30] Road to VR's teardown gives its energy as 14.0 Wh, while iFixit lists the cell as 14.3 Wh.[30][32] Road to VR gave battery life as 2 to 3 hours at the announcement, and as 1.5 to 2.5 hours in its 2024 comparison with the Quest 3 and Quest 3S; UploadVR got about two and a half hours while playing The Room VR in one sitting.[10][27][16]

Software and features

The Quest 2 launched with the same game and app library as the original Quest.[31] It runs Meta's Android-based operating system, which Meta named Meta Horizon OS in April 2024.[41] Apps are sold through the Meta Quest Store. In February 2021, Oculus launched App Lab, which let developers distribute apps on Quest without going through the store's curation review, as long as they met technical and content guidelines.[42]

PC VR

The Quest 2 can also run PC VR games when connected to a PC.[1] Oculus Link uses a USB-C cable; at launch it ran at 72 Hz.[31] Air Link, added as an experimental feature in April 2021, streams over Wi-Fi. Meta recommended a 5 GHz network on an AC or AX router connected to the PC by Ethernet.[3] The third-party app Virtual Desktop also streams PC VR games, including SteamVR titles such as Half-Life: Alyx, wirelessly; its streaming feature was approved for the official Quest store in February 2021, after Facebook had asked for its removal in 2019.[44] Since November 2023, Valve's Steam Link app has offered a direct wireless connection to SteamVR; Valve listed a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network with a wired connection to the PC, an NVIDIA GTX 970 or better and Windows 10 or newer as minimum requirements.[43]

Sales

Meta has not published a unit sales total for the Quest 2. In January 2021, Mark Zuckerberg said the headset was "on track to be the first mainstream virtual reality headset", and Facebook's non-advertising revenue grew 156% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2020.[45] In March 2021, Andrew Bosworth, then head of Facebook Reality Labs, said the Quest 2 "has outsold not just its predecessor, but all of its predecessors combined".[4]

IDC estimated that the Quest 2 held a 78% share of the combined AR and VR headset market in 2021, a year in which 11.2 million headsets shipped worldwide.[5] Counterpoint Research reported in May 2022 that it was the first VR headset to pass 10 million cumulative shipments.[46] Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon had said in November 2021 that the Quest 2 "was 10 million units", but Qualcomm later clarified that the number was "an average of third-party market size estimates from industry analysts" and not an official sales disclosure.[47] In an internal presentation reported by The Verge in 2023, Meta said it had sold nearly 20 million Quest headsets in total across the original Quest, Quest 2 and Quest Pro.[48]

Reception

Road to VR's Ben Lang called the Quest 2 "better in (almost) every way" than the original Quest and said the screen door effect was "basically invisible". He criticized the three-step IPD mechanism, which requires grabbing both lenses, and the default soft strap, which put "more pressure than I'd like" on his forehead. He called the optional Elite Strap "Oculus' best headstrap yet". Because it added few new features at launch, he described it as "Quest S on day one".[31]

UploadVR's Jamie Feltham described the headset as "enormous value" and found the controllers' battery life much improved. He felt pressure on his face after 10 to 15 minutes with the standard strap, and said Facebook's data practices deserved serious consideration from privacy-conscious buyers.[16]

Research

Several peer-reviewed studies have measured how accurately the Quest 2 tracks the headset, its controllers and the user's hands.

Holzwarth, Gisler, Hirt and Kunz compared the Quest 2's Oculus Insight tracking with SteamVR Tracking, using SteamVR Base Station 2.0 units and HTC Vive Trackers, in a 5 m by 5 m room-scale setup. They found significantly higher accuracy for the Quest 2 in the height of a tracked object and substantially higher precision in its tracked position. The authors concluded that it suited a wide range of research and industry uses, given its lower cost and easier setup, but said more work was needed on latency and on rooms with fewer landmarks or different lighting.[49]

Carnevale and colleagues moved a Touch controller through static positions covering translations of about 200 to 700 mm and rotations of 0 to 180 degrees, and compared the readings with a Qualisys optical motion capture system. The largest mean absolute errors were 13.52 plus or minus 6.57 mm for translation, at 500 mm from the headset along the x-direction, and 1.11 plus or minus 0.37 degrees for rotation, for a 40 degree rotation around the z-axis. They called the headset a promising tool for monitoring shoulder movement during rehabilitation; the tests used static positions and did not involve patients.[50]

Abdlkarim and colleagues proposed a method based on a fixed grid of targets to measure the positional error and delay of headset hand tracking. Applied to the Quest 2 with eight participants and a marker-based Qualisys reference system, it gave an average fingertip position error of 1.1 cm, an average finger joint angle error of 9.6 degrees and an average delay of 45.0 ms.[51]
