Camouflaj is an American video game developer based in Bellevue, Washington, that has worked mainly on virtual reality games since the late 2010s. Ryan Payton founded the studio in 2011 after leaving 343 Industries, where he had worked on Halo 4.[1][2] Its first game was the stealth title République, which it later adapted for VR headsets. It went on to make Marvel's Iron Man VR (2020) for PlayStation VR and Batman: Arkham Shadow (2024) for Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S.[3][4]

Meta acquired Camouflaj in October 2022, and the studio became part of Oculus Studios.[5] Batman: Arkham Shadow won Best VR/AR Game at The Game Awards 2024.[6] In January 2026 layoffs at Meta's Reality Labs division reportedly left the studio with only a few employees. Meta said the studio was not being shut down.[2][7]

History

Founding and République

Payton's departure from 343 Industries to form Camouflaj was reported in September 2011. GamesRadar+ described him as the creative director of Halo 4, while a Microsoft statement quoted in the same report said he had left earlier that summer after serving as narrative designer on the game for 15 months. He told Kotaku that he was no longer creatively excited about the project, and GamesRadar+ reported that the new studio already had two titles in development.[1] Before Halo 4, he had worked as a producer on Metal Gear Solid 4.[8] In a 2014 postmortem, Payton wrote that he left Microsoft about three years into development of Halo 4 to start an independent studio, and that planning documents from spring 2011 described Camouflaj as "a boutique game studio focused on quality, meaningful games for an international audience."[9]

The studio's first project was République, a stealth game built for mobile devices. Camouflaj ran a Kickstarter campaign for it with a 500,000 US dollar goal. Payton launched the campaign on 10 April 2012 and later wrote that it had reached only 11 percent of the goal 55 hours in.[10] The campaign passed its goal on 11 May 2012 with about six hours remaining.[11]

République was released episodically, starting with the first episode on iOS on 19 December 2013. The player acts as the anonymous ally of the main character, Hope, and watches over her by hacking into and switching between security camera feeds.[12] In June 2015 GungHo Online Entertainment, the maker of Puzzle & Dragons, signed a publishing partnership with Camouflaj to finish the series; three episodes had been released by then.[13]

Move into virtual reality

Camouflaj brought République to Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR in 2018, followed a year later by Oculus Quest and PC VR versions. UploadVR described the VR edition as the same content "retooled for VR."[14] The Quest version was priced at 14.99 US dollars and was scheduled for 25 July 2019.[15] For its tenth anniversary the studio released République: Anniversary Edition on 10 March 2022 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR, with new developer commentary tracks; a Nintendo Switch version was announced for the same month.[16][3]

Marvel's Iron Man VR was announced during Sony's State of Play broadcast on 25 March 2019 as a PlayStation VR exclusive made with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel Games. In the announcement post, Payton wrote that the team had been building the game for the previous two years.[17] The launch was delayed twice: Camouflaj first moved it from 28 February to 15 May 2020, and Sony then postponed it indefinitely because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The game was released on 3 July 2020.[17][18] Road to VR rated it "Great" and named it its PSVR Game of the Year for 2020.[19]

In March 2022 Camouflaj opened a second office in Kamakura, Japan, as Camouflaj Holdings, G.K., headed by Payton and Devil May Cry 5 producer Matt Walker. GamesIndustry.biz reported that the company then had around 70 developers.[3] In an update posted on 1 August 2022, the studio said it was "for the sixth year running" going "all-in on VR."[5]

Meta acquisition

Meta announced at Meta Connect on 11 October 2022 that it had acquired Camouflaj, Twisted Pixel and Armature Studio, which brought the number of VR studios it had bought in two years to nine. All three joined Oculus Studios.[5][20] Road to VR noted that Camouflaj was unusual among these acquisitions because its best-known VR game had been a PlayStation VR exclusive.[5] At the same event, Meta and Camouflaj announced a Meta Quest 2 version of Iron Man VR, developed with Endeavor One and released on 3 November 2022.[19]

Development of Batman: Arkham Shadow began in 2020. Payton told Road to VR that Meta contacted the studio while it was finishing Iron Man VR, asking to see a larger project. The studio chose Batman, which led to a six-month discussion with Warner Bros. Interactive about an official entry in the Arkham series. Camouflaj brought combat and locomotion prototypes to those talks, and it hired two former Rocksteady developers who had worked on earlier Arkham games.[21] Payton's launch letter credits contributions from Meta sister studios Armature, Big Box VR, Downpour Interactive, Ready At Dawn and Sanzaru, as well as the outside studios Bossa, Coatsink, Endeavor One and Polyarc.[22]

The game was released in October 2024 for Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S at 49.99 US dollars. Meta also included it with Quest 3 and 3S headsets purchased and activated by 30 April 2025.[4] In the same letter, Payton wrote that the whole Camouflaj team would support the game with free updates at least through the end of 2024.[22] Meta reported that version 1.1, released in November 2024, contained more than 1,300 optimizations and bug fixes.[6]

2026 layoffs

On 13 January 2026 Meta closed Twisted Pixel Games, Sanzaru Games and Armature Studio as part of layoffs affecting a reported 10 percent of Reality Labs employees.[23] The next day, a Meta spokesperson confirmed that Camouflaj had also been affected by layoffs but was not shutting down.[24][7] Former Meta employees told Aftermath, speaking anonymously, that the studio was down to "just a handful of employees" working on "the new user experience for upcoming hardware." They also said that studio heads had been let go, that games in development had been canceled, and that a sequel to Batman: Arkham Shadow had been in development at Sanzaru rather than Camouflaj.[25] A Meta spokesperson told Game Developer that the company was shifting some investment "from Metaverse toward Wearables" and planned to reinvest the savings in wearables.[26]
