Oculus VR was founded in July 2012 as an American virtual reality company. It developed Oculus Rift, a family of head-mounted displays for PC-based VR. Facebook announced an agreement to buy Oculus on March 25, 2014 and completed the acquisition in July 2014.[1][3][15] The Oculus product family later included standalone headsets, and Meta announced the Meta Quest name for Quest hardware and its app in January 2022.[13][18]

- Main article: Oculus Rift
The Rift progressed from developer hardware to a consumer headset. Its original development kits let software developers build VR applications before the consumer launch.[19][20]
| Version | Dated release history |
|---|---|
| Development Kit 1 (DK1) | Initial shipments in March 2013. A 2014 Oculus developer presentation reported 55,000 DK1 units made and shipped.[20] |
| Development Kit 2 (DK2) | Announced and opened for preorders on March 19, 2014 at US$350, with July shipping expected. It added OLED low-persistence display technology and camera-based positional tracking. By August 8, Oculus reported 16,000 DK2 units shipped.[21][20] |
| Consumer Version 1 (CV1) | A Q1 2016 shipping target was announced on May 6, 2015. Preorders opened January 6, 2016 at US$599; customer deliveries began March 28, 2016.[22][23][10] |
The first consumer Rift used a connected PC and external tracking sensor.[10] Oculus Touch was revealed on June 11, 2015 as a pair of handheld controllers.[24] In October 2016 Oculus announced Touch preorders for October 10 at US$199 and a planned December 6 shipment date, with an additional tracking sensor included.[25]
Other headsets
The company's products covered phone-based VR, PC headsets and standalone headsets. Gear VR used a compatible Samsung smartphone; Oculus Go and Quest integrated the computing hardware into the headset.[11][12][13]
| Product | Historical introduction |
|---|---|
| Samsung Gear VR consumer edition | Announced September 24, 2015 at US$99. Samsung opened US preorders on November 10 with a US$99.99 MSRP and shipments planned as early as November 20. The model supported the Galaxy Note 5, S6 edge+, S6 and S6 edge.[26][11] |
| Oculus Go | Launched May 1, 2018 as Oculus's first standalone headset, available in 23 countries from US$199.[12] |
| Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S | Began shipping May 21, 2019. Quest was a standalone system; Rift S was a PC headset with a halo headband designed with Lenovo. Quest used Oculus Insight to track movement with sensors on the headset. Rift S also removed the need for external tracking sensors.[13] |
| Oculus Quest 2 | Launched October 13, 2020, with an initial starting price of US$299.[14] |
On October 13, 2026, the US Meta Quest store listed Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S.[17]
These dates and prices describe the original launches. Support policies subsequently changed for individual products. Meta's updated Quest 1 policy ended new feature development, set August 2024 as the end of critical bug fixes and security maintenance, and allowed existing-app updates through May 1, 2025, with the update cutoff on May 2. Existing apps could continue running after these support cutoffs.[27]

Acquisition by Facebook
The March 2014 agreement valued the transaction at approximately US$2 billion: US$400 million in cash and 23.1 million Facebook shares, then valued at US$1.6 billion using the average closing price during the 20 trading days before March 21. An additional US$300 million in cash and stock depended on specified milestones.[3]
Facebook's July 2014 completion disclosure recorded 23,071,377 Class B shares, valued at US$1.6 billion on the acquisition date, and approximately US$400 million cash. The contingent terms allowed another 3,460,706 Class B shares and US$60 million cash if milestones were met.[15] Its 2014 annual report later recorded preliminary accounting purchase consideration of US$1.853 billion, including US$169 million contingent consideration. That calculation excluded acquired cash and amounts accounted for as post-acquisition compensation. It is a different accounting measure from the March announcement's headline deal value.[37]
Research and acquisitions
Oculus expanded its engineering and research teams through several acquisitions. The announcements identify work on networking, hand tracking, scene reconstruction and spatial audio.[38][39][40][41]
| Date | Team or technology | Dated transaction and relevance |
|---|---|---|
| June 24, 2014 | Carbon Design | Deal announced; Xbox 360 controller/Kinect designers.[42] |
| July 7, 2014 | RakNet | Oculus announced its acquisition of the C++ game networking engine and released it under a modified BSD license. It had used RakNet for internal networked systems and tools.[38] |

| May 26, 2015 | Surreal Vision | Oculus announced the acquisition of the real-time 3D scene reconstruction team, which joined Oculus Research in Redmond.[40] |
| July 16, 2015 | Pebbles Interfaces | Oculus announced an agreement to acquire the team, whose optics, sensor systems and algorithms tracked hand movement. It was to join hardware engineering and computer vision teams.[43] |
| May 23, 2016 | Two Big Ears | Facebook acquired the spatial-audio startup behind 3Dception. Its tools contributed to the Facebook 360 Spatial Workstation announcement for audio production.[41] |
| December 2016 | The Eye Tribe | The company's annual report states that Facebook Overseas Inc. acquired the company and Oculus VR LLC purchased all its intellectual property. Its eye-tracking work was followed by research services for Oculus VR Ireland Limited and a wind-down of operations.[44] |
ZeniMax litigation
- Main article: ZeniMax v. Oculus
ZeniMax Media brought claims involving trade secrets, copyright, contract obligations and other matters against Oculus and individuals associated with it. Facebook's annual report described a February 1, 2017 jury verdict awarding aggregate damages of US$500 million on four claims, with verdicts for the defendants on the remaining claims.[45]
The court's June 27, 2018 final judgment awarded ZeniMax and id Software US$200 million against Oculus for breach of contract and US$50 million for copyright infringement, plus interest. It entered a conversion judgment against Carmack without damages and judgments for the defendants on the plaintiffs' remaining claims. The June judgment set different awards from the February jury verdict.[46]
Organization and brand transition
The Oculus research organization and the broader AR/VR business used related names at different times. In August 2020 Facebook applied Facebook Reality Labs to its overall AR/VR team. Its announcement explained that the name had previously referred to the research division, formerly Oculus Research. The Oculus Connect conference became Facebook Connect.[47]
On October 28, 2021 Facebook introduced Meta as its company brand and announced a separate Reality Labs reporting segment alongside its Family of Apps. The announcement stated that the corporate structure was unchanged.[16] In January 2022 the company described the transition from Oculus Quest to Meta Quest and from the Oculus app to the Meta Quest app, including packaging and social-channel branding. The Meta Quest product brand, Meta parent-company name and Reality Labs organization refer to different parts of the business.[18]
Account changes followed a separate schedule. Meta accounts launched in August 2022, allowing VR login without a Facebook social-media account.[48] The January 2022 brand announcement described Oculus's continuing role in software and developer tools.[18]
