Capcom (CAPCOM CO., LTD.) is a Japanese developer and publisher of video games, headquartered in Chuo-ku, Osaka. Its corporate data gives 30 May 1979 as the date of establishment and 11 June 1983 as the date it began operations as Capcom; it is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.[1] A 2007 company press release states that Capcom "was founded by the current president, Kenzo Tsujimoto, in 1983."[2] Its series include Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan), Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, Mega Man (Rockman), Onimusha and Ace Attorney.

Capcom's main work in virtual reality has come through the Resident Evil series. Its 2015 tech demo KITCHEN for Sony's Project Morpheus was built on the same engine as Resident Evil 7 biohazard (2017), the PlayStation 4 version of which can be played in full on PlayStation VR. Capcom later added free VR modes for PlayStation VR2 to Resident Evil Village (2023) and the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4, and it partnered with Oculus Studios and Armature Studio on Resident Evil 4 VR (2021) for the Oculus Quest 2.[3][4][5] In Japan the company also runs its own location-based VR attractions under the VR-X name in its amusement arcades.[6]

History

Corporate origins

Capcom's corporate history begins with I.R.M Corporation, set up in Matsubara, Osaka, in May 1979 with capital of 10 million yen to develop and sell electronic game machines. In May 1981 it established a subsidiary, Japan Capsule Computer Co., Ltd., and in September 1981 the company was renamed Sanbi Co., Ltd. and moved its head office to Habikino, Osaka. The original Capcom Co., Ltd. was established in Hirano, Osaka, in June 1983 to sell software. It merged with Sanbi in January 1989, and the combined company took the name Capcom Co., Ltd.[7]

Capcom's shares were registered for over-the-counter trading in October 1990 and listed on the second section of the Osaka Stock Exchange in October 1993. In July 1994 the company moved into a newly built head office in Uchihirano-machi, Chuo-ku, Osaka. The stock was listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in October 2000 and moved to the exchange's Prime market in April 2022.[7]

Management

Kenzo Tsujimoto became president and representative director in June 1983 and chief executive officer in April 2001, and he has been chairman since July 2007. Haruhiro Tsujimoto joined the company in April 1987 and has been president and chief operating officer since July 2007. Capcom's 2025 integrated report lists both men in these roles as of 23 June 2025, and its management team page, dated as of 18 June 2026, still does.[2][8][9] A March 2026 notice of personnel changes kept Haruhiro Tsujimoto as president and COO and put him in charge of the Entertainment Experience Business and the Pachinko & Pachislo Business Divisions from 1 April 2026.[10]

Recent results

For the fiscal year ended 31 March 2026, Capcom reported net sales of 195,365 million yen (up 15.2 percent) and operating profit of 75,295 million yen (up 14.5 percent). It sold 59.07 million units in its Digital Contents business, led by the release of Resident Evil Requiem and catalog sales of the same series. The company said it had set records in all profit categories for the ninth consecutive year.[11] As of 31 March 2026 it had 3,976 employees on a consolidated basis. Its stated business covers home, mobile and arcade games and the management of amusement arcades.[1]

XR work

KITCHEN and the RE Engine

Capcom showed KITCHEN at E3 2015 as one of the demos for Sony's Project Morpheus VR headset. Road to VR's list of Morpheus demos at the show described it as a Capcom "tech demo" set in a disturbing kitchen.[12] When Capcom announced Resident Evil 7 biohazard in June 2016, it said the game ran on its new in-house RE Engine, which it called "fully VR compatible", and that the previous year's KITCHEN demo had been built on the same engine.[4]

Resident Evil 7 biohazard

Resident Evil 7 biohazard was released for PlayStation 4 on 24 January 2017 with PlayStation VR support.[4] UploadVR reported in July 2016 that all of the PlayStation 4 version would be playable with the headset.[3] Capcom published daily global statistics from players who had opted in to share data with the company. On 29 January 2017 those figures showed 9.52 percent of tracked players, some 81,000 people, playing in VR.[13] By August 2018 Capcom's figures counted 501,511 VR players, 13.93 percent of the 3,601,502 players it tracked across all platforms; UploadVR noted that because tracking is optional, the real number could be higher.[14] The game won Best VR/AR Game at The Game Awards 2017, ahead of Farpoint, Lone Echo, Star Trek: Bridge Crew and Superhot VR.[15]

Resident Evil 4 VR

Resident Evil 4 VR, a first-person VR version of Capcom's Resident Evil 4, was released on 21 October 2021 exclusively for Oculus Quest 2. Meta wrote that "Capcom partnered with Oculus Studios and Armature Studio" on the project; Armature built a full upper-body rig for the character Leon so that players handle weapons and objects with their hands.[5] The game won Best VR/AR at The Game Awards 2021.[16]

PlayStation VR2 modes

In December 2022 Capcom announced that a VR Mode for Resident Evil Village would come to PlayStation VR2 on 22 February 2023 as free downloadable content.[17] In its review, UploadVR noted that all weapons must be reloaded by hand and that the mode uses the Sense controllers' haptics and adaptive triggers along with headset haptics; it called the game "a phenomenal launch title for PlayStation VR2".[18]

A VR mode for the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake followed on PlayStation VR2 on 8 December 2023, free to owners of the base game. It moves the camera from the remake's third-person view into first person and covers the main story. Capcom also released a free demo that can be played without the base game.[19]

The pattern did not carry over to the next main game. In an interview with Minimap magazine, reported by Road to VR in December 2025, Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa said: "At this time, there are no plans to bring any parts of Resident Evil Requiem to VR platforms." Road to VR gave the game's planned release date as 26 February 2026.[20]

VR-X arcade attractions

VR-X is Capcom's brand of original location-based VR attractions, run in the company's own amusement facilities in Japan.[6] Capcom introduced VR-X as a new installation at its Plaza Capcom Ikebukuro store near Tokyo, where BIOHAZARD VALIANT RAID, a Resident Evil game that casts players as members of an Umbrella special forces team, was set to open on 19 July 2019.[21] The same store scheduled sessions of Biohazard: Walkthrough the Fear, a free-roam attraction based on Resident Evil 7, from 26 October 2019. Sessions took four players and lasted 40 minutes at 2,800 yen.[22]

Later VR-X titles brought other Capcom series into VR. Rockman VR, the first amusement VR title in the Mega Man series, was scheduled to begin operation at Plaza Capcom Ikebukuro on 18 July 2020 as a single-player game of about 25 minutes.[23] An Ace Attorney VR attraction, which Capcom's announcement described as the first in the series, was among the VR-X titles at the MIRAINO Aeon Mall Hakusan facility that Capcom opened in Ishikawa Prefecture in July 2021.[24] Street Fighter VR, based on Street Fighter V, began a location test at Plaza Capcom Hiroshima on 17 February 2023. Players fight characters including Ryu, Zangief and Vega in first person, using poses instead of buttons to throw moves such as the Hadoken and Shoryuken.[25] Onimusha VR Shadow Team, the first VR game in the Onimusha series, began operating at four Capcom venues in March 2025, the first two from 14 March. It supports cooperative play for one to four people, and MoguLive reported that it runs on Meta Quest 3, with a katana-style hilt attached to the controller.[26]

In 2026 Capcom put VR-X into a new arcade format, CAPCOMIX. The first site opened in the Hoop shopping center in Abeno, Osaka, on 31 March 2026, and the second, the first in eastern Japan, opened at MARK IS Minatomirai in Yokohama on 17 July 2026. Both offer the Onimusha, Resident Evil and Street Fighter VR titles.[6][27][28] As of October 2026 the official VR-X page listed seven venues.[6]

Licensed and AR projects

Monster Hunter Now, a location-based mobile game for iOS and Android set in the Monster Hunter world, launched worldwide on 14 September 2023. Capcom's announcement credits Niantic with developing and distributing the game.[29] Its AR Camera Mode places monsters in the player's real surroundings.[30]

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies VR is a VR version of the 2013 Ace Attorney game, developed and published by Amata K.K. under an agreement with Capcom. It was announced on 24 September 2026 for release in 2027 on Meta Quest headsets and the Meta VR Glasses.[31]
