Drunkn Bar Fight is a VR brawling game developed and published by The Munky. Players start fights with the patrons of bars and other venues, using their fists and almost any object they can pick up as a weapon.[1] It entered Early Access on Steam for the HTC Vive on November 28, 2016 and later added Oculus Rift support. Versions followed for PlayStation VR on February 13, 2018 and for Oculus Quest on September 12, 2019.[1][2][3] The Steam version left Early Access on July 17, 2025, more than eight years after its Early Access debut. The same day, its sequel, Drunkn Bar Fight 2, entered Steam Early Access with The Munky as publisher.[1][4]
The game began with a single bar and grew through free updates to several venues, including a wedding reception, an alley, a police station, an airport and a carnival. It also gained four-player online co-op, optional Vive Tracker foot tracking for kicking, and gameplay modes that switch off the police or make weapons indestructible.[5][6][7]
Gameplay
Drunkn Bar Fight is played in first person with two tracked motion controllers, or two PlayStation Move controllers on PlayStation VR.[2] The player punches, grabs and throws objects such as bottles, darts, chairs and tip jars at other patrons, then can knock opponents to the floor and toss them through windows.[1] Reviewing the PlayStation VR version, TheSixthAxis described picking up stunned opponents and using them as ragdolls, and throwing darts, bottles and snooker balls.[8]
Alcohol is part of the design. KitGuru's preview before the Early Access launch described a core loop in which drinking builds the player's confidence for fighting, while drinking too much makes fighting harder.[9] In early builds, the player grew taller and stronger after five drinks. A 2018 beta changed this so that players start at their real height and can grow, shrink or get stronger by drinking one of four magic potions. The same beta split each bar into seven rounds.[7]
The menu is a cell phone that the player brings up with a controller button. From it, players start or join multiplayer games, and later builds also used it to choose gameplay modes.[10][11] The modes added in 2018 can stop law enforcement from interrupting a fight, make weapons indestructible and turn off player knockouts. An Endless mode lets the player keep fighting with no end point.[11] Meta's PC VR store listing describes six levels (bars, parties, a supermarket, a police station and the streets), more than 110 weapons and over 50 enemies.[12]
VR features
Drunkn Bar Fight is VR-only on Steam and supports SteamVR in standing or room-scale play.[1] Before its Early Access launch on the HTC Vive, KitGuru reported that it needed a play space of at least 2 by 2 meters.[9] After Oculus Rift support arrived, The Munky advised Rift players in January 2017 that, although the game tried to support room-scale, standing in one place and moving with the directional sticks might work better, because hand tracking was more reliable when the player faced the sensors.[13]
Keith Kirby, CEO of The Munky, said in 2017 that the game uses inverse kinematics.[14] Several updates added VR-specific options:
| Date | Feature | Source |
|---|---|---|
| April 2018 (beta) | Vive Tracker support for foot tracking, which lets players kick | [7] |
| March 2019 | Height adjustment, snap turning, world orientation setting, and a choice of the trigger or grab button for grabbing | [15] |
| January 2021 | Restored default control settings for Valve Index controllers after an earlier update broke them | [16] |
| September 2023 | Reworked player hands and player models, new enemy hit reactions, and new grabbing that allows two-handed grips or holding one object in each hand | [17] |
| October 2024 | Fixed the phone menu button on HTC Vive and added a cell phone holder to make the menu easier to use on that headset | [18] |
Multiplayer
Online multiplayer reached the Steam version on March 15, 2017, after two rounds of beta testing.[19] Players could invite a friend or join a random game, and they talked through voice chat by holding the grip button on the right Vive controller or the trigger on Rift.[10] A June 2017 build added a first version of "Local Social", a local multiplayer mode in which other people at the same PC control the bar's opponents with a keyboard or gamepad.[20] Four-player multiplayer was tested in 2018 with a move to Bolt Cloud networking, and The Munky ran scheduled "Friday Night Fights" community sessions.[7][21] The August 2021 Police Station update added support for four-player co-op.[6] On PlayStation VR, up to four players can play online, which requires PlayStation Plus.[2]
The Steam store lists these modes:
- Single-player
- Online player-versus-player and Shared/Split Screen player-versus-player
- Online co-op[1]
Development
Drunkn Bar Fight was The Munky's first VR game. In a 2017 interview with VR Fitness Insider, Kirby said the studio first built a different prototype, "Slow Motion Fighters", in which the player controlled two MMA fighters in slow motion from a third-person view. Kirby said it quickly became obvious that being the fighter was more fun than controlling one from a third-person view, and the project became a first-person fighting game.[14] Kirby also said, "We didn't realize we were creating an aerobic game when we started."[14]
The Munky set development priorities in part through player surveys. A January 2017 survey ranked grabbing and throwing, new environments, breakable objects, gore and multiplayer as the most requested features. The developer said it would focus on multiplayer first, then grabbing and throwing, and would improve the original bar before adding new ones.[22] According to a 2023 case study by the analytics company GameAnalytics, the game was co-developed with VRMonkey, a studio formerly called Naked Monkey Games, and the two studios built it in Unity.[23] A December 2022 press release placed The Munky in Hermosa Beach, California.[24] The studio's website gives Las Vegas, Nevada.[25]

UploadVR covered a PlayStation VR trailer in January 2018, before the PlayStation VR release, and noted support for PlayStation Move controllers.[33] The Steam store page also says the game is available to arcades through SpringboardVR, a VR arcade content service.[1] As of October 2026, the game is listed at US$17.99 on Steam and the Meta Horizon Store (Quest), and at US$16.99 on the PlayStation Store and Meta's PC VR store.[1][34][2][12] The PlayStation Store rates it ESRB Mature. The Quest store lists a 16+ rating for strong violence, strong language and use of alcohol and tobacco.[2][34]
Sequel
Drunkn Bar Fight 2 was released for PlayStation VR2 on PlayStation 5 on June 11, 2025, with The Munky, LLC as publisher.[35] It entered Steam Early Access on July 17, 2025, where Yooperlite is listed as developer and The Munky as publisher.[4] It is also sold as an Early Access title on the Meta Horizon Store.[36] The sequel's announcement on the original game's Steam page highlighted a "Drunkn Physics 3.0" system, fire from a lighter, and enemies that retaliate.[37]
Reception
UploadVR's Jamie Feltham called the game "Goat Simulator for VR, only with more punching and dart throwing" when he covered its PlayStation VR trailer in 2018.[33] Reporting on the upcoming Quest release in 2019, he described it as "wonky" and bug-filled, which he said was part of its appeal.[3] TheSixthAxis gave the PlayStation VR version 7/10. Its review called the game "Instant, stupid VR fun" and praised the "Dumb ragdoll enemies", but it criticized the visuals, the lack of in-game menus or information and the limited depth, noting there were only three bars at the time.[8]
On Steam, the game had "Very Positive" user reviews in October 2017, according to UploadVR.[5] As of October 2026, its Steam page shows "Mostly Positive", with 75% of 982 user reviews positive.[1] Metacritic lists no Metascore for the game because it has fewer than four critic reviews.[38] The fitness site VR Fitness Insider interviewed Kirby about the physical exertion involved and reported on later updates.[14][21] In the 2023 GameAnalytics case study, the analytics company said the game was "among the top 20 selling VR Games of all time" and normally had more than 100,000 monthly active users, rising to 200,000 at peak times. These figures come from a vendor case study and have not been independently confirmed.[23]
VR Fitness Insider reported in 2018 that the developer of The Thrill of the Fight had added a poster referencing Drunkn Bar Fight to that game's gym.[21]
