The Thrill of the Fight is a single-player Virtual Reality boxing game developed by Sealost Interactive, the one-person studio of American developer Ian Fitz. It launched for PC VR headsets on July 1, 2016 and came to the standalone Oculus Quest in October 2019.[1][2] The game puts the player in a virtual gym to fight a series of computer-controlled opponents using motion controllers and full-body movement, with an emphasis on realistic punching and footwork rather than arcade mechanics.[3]
The Thrill of the Fight became one of the most popular VR boxing titles on the Quest platform and a long-running best-seller on the Meta Quest Store.[4][5] It is also one of the most physically demanding VR games, frequently cited for the number of calories it burns.[6] A sequel, The Thrill of the Fight 2, was co-developed by Sealost and Halfbrick Studios and left early access on Quest on November 20, 2025.[7]
Gameplay
The player boxes from a first-person view, throwing punches by physically swinging the Tracked Motion Controllers held in each hand and dodging, blocking, and weaving with their own body. Movement uses Room-scale tracking; the Steam version requires a minimum play area of 2 metres by 2 metres (6.5 ft by 6.5 ft), and joystick locomotion is not supported.[1] The design avoids common arcade conventions such as stamina bars and exaggerated knockout blows, which the developer describes as a "semi-sim" approach that combines elements of realism with simplified mechanics.[8][3]
The single-player mode has the player progress through a roster of distinct computer-controlled fighters, each with their own appearance, style, and tactics. Because punches are driven by real arm and body motion, the game is physically strenuous, and it has been widely adopted as a workout title. The Virtual Reality Institute of Health and Exercise lists it among the most intense VR games for calories burned per minute, comparable to or exceeding dedicated gym equipment.[6]
Development
The Thrill of the Fight was made by Ian Fitz, working alone under the name Sealost Interactive. Fitz built the game after consumer VR headsets such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift reached the market, developing it independently with no outside budget.[9] The PC version reached the Steam platform in 2016 and the standalone Quest version followed in October 2019.[1][2]
Fitz began work on a sequel in 2020, but development was difficult until he partnered with the Australian studio Halfbrick Studios at the start of 2023.[9] Fitz described the division of labour: "I made the blueprint. Sealost prototyped and proved out many of the mechanics and tech challenges. Halfbrick is putting together a release-worthy product and supporting it into the future."[4] By 2026 the Steam store listing for the original game showed Halfbrick Studios as its publisher.[1]
Release
| Platform | Store | Release date |
|---|---|---|
| SteamVR / Oculus Rift (PC VR) | Steam | July 1, 2016 |
| Oculus Quest (standalone) | Meta Quest Store | October 25, 2019 |
The PC version supports SteamVR and Oculus Rift headsets and sells for US$9.99; the Steam listing notes that the PC build does not support the standalone Oculus Quest, which received its own native version.[1] On the Quest, the game is sold through the Meta Quest Store for US$9.99 and carries a 16+ age rating for strong violence.[5]
Reception
On Steam, The Thrill of the Fight holds an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating, with 95% of more than 3,000 user reviews positive.[1] On the Meta Quest Store it is marked as a top seller and holds a user rating of about 4.7 out of 5 from roughly 13,000 ratings.[5]
The game is regularly singled out for its physical intensity. The Virtual Reality Institute of Health and Exercise places it among the most demanding VR games for energy expenditure, in the range associated with vigorous cardiovascular exercise.[6] Coverage of the sequel routinely described the original as the most popular VR boxing game on Quest, reflecting its sustained sales on the platform.[4][3]
