YouTube VR is a virtual reality application from Google that plays YouTube content on VR headsets, including standard rectangular videos shown on a virtual screen and immersive 360-degree and 180-degree videos that surround the viewer.[1][2] It first launched on November 9, 2016 as a standalone app for Google's Daydream mobile VR platform, timed to the release of the Daydream View headset.[2][3]
Over the following years YouTube VR spread to most major headsets and then contracted as several of those platforms shut down. As of 2026 it is distributed mainly through the Meta Horizon Store for Meta Quest headsets and through the Pico store for PICO 4, in both cases as a free download.[1][4][5]
Features
YouTube VR plays the full YouTube catalogue rather than only VR-specific content. Ordinary 2D videos appear on a large virtual screen in a theater-style environment, while clips uploaded as 360-degree or VR video are rendered so the viewer can look around in any direction.[2][1] Navigation uses voice search built on Google's speech recognition alongside controller or keyboard input, and signing in to a Google account brings across subscriptions, watch history and playlists.[5][1]
The app supports both monoscopic and stereoscopic (3D) 360-degree and 180-degree video.[6][7] Because a viewer sees only a fraction of a 360-degree frame at any moment, high source resolution matters: in April 2024 Google added 8K (4320p) playback on the Meta Quest 3, covering rectangular video as well as 2D and 3D 360-degree and 180-degree formats, though that tier is limited to standard dynamic range.[7] On Quest the app also supports controller-free hand tracking, which the Pico 4 version lacks, and it offers shared "watch party" viewing in a virtual room.[5][1] The video itself is captured from a single point, so 360-degree clips have no positional tracking; moving the head changes the view direction but not the vantage point.[6]
Platform history
YouTube VR began as a Daydream exclusive and was gradually ported to other headsets, several of which were later discontinued. The table below summarises when the dedicated app (or, for PlayStation VR, YouTube VR support inside the existing app) arrived on each platform.
| Platform | Arrived | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Daydream | November 9, 2016 | Launch app for the Daydream View headset; phone-based VR.[2][3] |
| PlayStation VR | January 20, 2017 | Added through the version 1.10 update to the existing PSVR YouTube app, not a separate YouTube VR app; PSVR was the first tethered headset to gain YouTube VR support.[6] |
| Steam (PC VR) | December 15, 2017 | Released for HTC Vive, and also usable on Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.[8] |
| Samsung Gear VR | July 2018 | Official app added after Gear VR users had only had browser access.[9] |
| Oculus Go | November 12, 2018 | Free release on the Oculus Store for the standalone Go.[9] |
| Meta Quest (Oculus Quest) | May 21, 2019 | A launch-day title for the first Oculus Quest, alongside other Google apps.[10] |
| PICO 4 | December 6, 2023 | Official app for ByteDance's Pico headset, replacing browser-based 360 playback.[5] |
Several of these platforms have since shut down. Google discontinued Daydream in October 2019, stopping sales of the Daydream View headset and declining to make the Pixel 4 compatible with the platform.[11] The Steam version was delisted in December 2020 with the notice "App retired by publisher request," ending the official PC VR release.[12] Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Go were also discontinued, leaving Meta Quest and PICO 4 as the actively supported platforms.
Current status
As of mid-2026 YouTube VR is listed for free on the Meta Horizon Store for Meta Quest headsets and on the Pico store for the PICO 4.[1][4][5] Google's own support documentation lists the compatible headsets as the four Quest models plus the Pico 4 and does not list PlayStation VR, PlayStation VR2 or any current PC VR headset.[4] The app remains free to download, with monetisation handled through standard YouTube advertising and memberships rather than an app purchase.[1]
