Yeeps, launched as Yeeps: Hide and Seek, is a free-to-play social virtual reality game developed and published by Trass Games for Meta Quest headsets. Players control small stuffed creatures called Yeeps, move by grabbing and swinging with their arms in the manner of Gorilla Tag, and pull "stuffing" blocks and gadgets out of their bellies to build forts, bridges and traps while playing hide and seek and other modes. The game entered closed alpha in February 2024, launched on App Lab on March 14, 2024, and moved to the main Meta Quest Store on July 18, 2024.

Trass Games told Road to VR in July 2024 that the game had reached 360,000 monthly active users while it was still an App Lab title. A major overhaul branded Yeeps 2.0 arrived in July 2025. Meta's year-end chart placed Yeeps fourth among the top-grossing Quest games of 2025, and as of September 2026 the Meta Horizon Store lists the game under the shortened title "Yeeps" with a 4.8-star average from about 87,000 user ratings.

Gameplay

Yeeps uses the arm-based locomotion popularized by Gorilla Tag: players push and pull themselves across surfaces with their hands, climb walls and swing from ledges instead of using a thumbstick. Road to VR's Ben Lang wrote in June 2024 that the game "successfully emulated" that locomotion and social formula and then pushed it further with gliding, grappling, launch pads and creation tools.

The building system is the game's main addition to the formula. Each Yeep is a plush toy filled with stuffing, and players pull stuffing blocks out of their own bellies to place pillows, bridges and forts in the middle of a match. Other craftable items include stuffing-filled bombs, umbrellas that let a player glide, decoys and grappling hooks. Trass Games co-founder Jack Southard described the design philosophy as "building is playing", citing Minecraft, Fortnite and LittleBigPlanet as inspirations.

At the 2024 store launch the game had two main modes. In hide and seek, hiders use parkour, teamwork and quick construction to avoid seekers, while a creative mode lets players shape terrain, place wooden building blocks and add interactive elements such as trampolines, launch pads, spike traps and fans, alone or with friends. Further craftable items, such as the gliding umbrellas and seeker decoys, unlock the more a player plays. Trass Games' own site describes public lobbies joined through in-world signposts, private worlds for solo or friends-only play with custom map building, an in-game currency earned through play, and voice moderation through a Voice Patrol integration plus in-game reporting, muting and a suspension system. The Meta Horizon Store tags the game as Action, Arcade, Platformer, Sandbox and World creation.

The game has had themed updates. For Halloween 2024 it added a "Monster" mode to the base game alongside a paid Halloween Bundle of cosmetics that included a witch doctor outfit and a Skullbomb gadget. In April 2026 Meta's monthly Quest recap covered a "Superhero Update" that lets players supercharge items to gain powers such as lightning blasts, lasers and super-speed travel across the world.

Development

Yeeps was made by Trass Games, a San Francisco studio founded by Jack Southard (CEO), Nathan Jew (CTO) and Steve Shockey (COO). Before Yeeps the founders had released Overboard, a shark-fighting game on Steam in 2019, and Gods of Gravity on Quest in 2021. According to the Road to VR interview, each of the three founders pitched a different game idea and elements of all three were consolidated into Yeeps; development took about eight months from the start of work to the closed alpha in February 2024.

Trass Games went through the a16z Speedrun accelerator (cohort 001), which invested US$750,000, and the team grew from three to six people around the store launch. The studio said in July 2024 that it did not plan to raise further funding. The studio also took part in Meta's Horizon Start developer program; Southard presented a session titled "Yeeps: A Meta Horizon Start success story" at Meta Connect 2024 on September 25, 2024. Southard has described the goal as making Yeeps "the next playful platform for social UGC in VR".

The a16z Speedrun profile lists the studio at 13 employees and describes Yeeps as blending creative elements of Minecraft and Roblox with Gorilla Tag-style play. Trass Games Inc. holds the trademarks and copyrights for Yeeps, Yeeps: Hide and Seek and Gods of Gravity, and publishes a licensing policy that allows free fan content without a license while requiring a licensing agreement for commercial use.

Meta announced the main-store date on June 27, 2024, noting that the App Lab version had already gathered more than 21,000 user reviews. By the time of the store launch the game had passed 31,000 user ratings, which Road to VR compared with the roughly 18,000 that SUPERHOT VR had accumulated over several years. Trass Games' site lists the Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro as supported headsets and describes the business model as free-to-play with optional cosmetic in-app purchases. No release on other platforms had been announced as of September 2026.

Yeeps 2.0

Trass Games published an overview trailer for Yeeps 2.0 on its official YouTube channel on July 15, 2025, calling it "the biggest update in Yeeps history" and pointing players to a launch that Thursday, July 17, 2025. Road to VR reported the following week that "Yeeps 2.0" was trading places with Animal Company, Beat Saber and Gorilla Tag for the top spot on Quest's highest-earning game chart. A second trailer featuring community creators followed on August 15, 2025; in its description Trass Games counted more than eight game modes, more than 100 gadgets and thousands of community-built worlds. The Meta Horizon Store listing was later shortened to "Yeeps".

Merchandise and companion app

Trass Games sells physical products through yeeps.com. The Yeeps Plush is a 6.3-inch (16 cm) collectible with a working zipper pouch, magnetic hands and a carabiner loop, priced at US$29.99, and each purchase comes with a promo code that unlocks a matching plush item in the game. The Yeeps Maker Kit 1 (US$34.99, ages 10 and up) is a set of five sewing projects (discs, bats, sticky bombs, sleep caps and iron-on patches) for the plush, and also includes a promo code for the corresponding in-game cosmetics.

The free Yeeps Companion app for Android is a content-creation tool that follows the player in VR, records first-person or shoulder-camera footage and requires the Quest game to function; on Google Play it shows more than 100,000 downloads and a 4.6-star rating, with an update dated September 16, 2026.

Reception

Yeeps has not been widely reviewed by critics; Metacritic lists no critic score for it, and its user score of 9.6 is based on only 13 ratings. Its reception is instead visible in store ratings and sales charts. In April 2025 MIXED reported the game in second place on the Meta Quest top-selling chart with a 4.9-star average from more than 72,000 reviews. UploadVR's weekly revenue chart for the Meta Horizon Store placed Yeeps ninth in the week of November 24, 2025.

In Meta's chart of the top-grossing Quest games of 2025, Yeeps ranked fourth, between Gorilla Tag and UG; GameDiscoverCo's Simon Carless grouped it with Animal Company, UG and Scary Baboon as "sandbox, voicechat-y" free-to-play titles that did well in 2025, calling Yeeps "a rare non-animal entry" in that category. UploadVR wrote in February 2026 that Yeeps was among the top ten grossing titles on Meta Quest and one of six free-to-play games in that top ten, alongside Gorilla Tag, Animal Company, Roblox and VRChat. Developers of later hits have cited the game as an influence: Animal Company's team named Gorilla Tag, Yeeps and Among Us VR as inspirations, and UG's Michael Murdock listed Yeeps among the games that influenced UG.

Trass Games as an investor

Trass Games funded UG, a 2025 Quest hit, with what UG's Michael Murdock described as "a six-figure sum from a strategic partner" in exchange for a scaling revenue share; Murdock said Trass wanted to keep Yeeps as its "#1 priority" while contributing to UG. On February 2, 2026, Trass Games and ENVER (the studio behind MotoX and Scary Baboon) announced a joint initiative committing up to US$2 million in future investments in emerging VR studios making social-first games; in the press release the studio described Yeeps as a top 10 best-selling VR game for two consecutive years.
