Among Us VR is a first-person social deduction game developed by Schell Games and published by Innersloth, with production support from Robot Teddy. It adapts Innersloth's 2018 multiplayer title Among Us into Virtual Reality, placing four to ten players aboard a spaceship where a hidden Impostor (or Impostors) tries to eliminate the rest of the crew without being caught.[1][2]

The game launched on November 10, 2022 for the Meta Quest 2 and SteamVR-compatible headsets at a price of US $9.99, and came to PICO and PlayStation VR2 on December 5, 2023.[1][3] It reached one million units sold in under ten weeks.[4] On February 20, 2025 the title was renamed Among Us 3D ahead of a non-VR Windows version that released on May 6, 2025; the existing VR versions remained playable.[5]

Gameplay

Among Us VR keeps the structure of the original Among Us but renders it from a first-person viewpoint inside a fully modeled spaceship instead of the top-down perspective of the flatscreen game.[2] A lobby holds four to ten players, who are secretly assigned the role of Crewmate or Impostor at the start of each round.[2] Crewmates win by completing a set of maintenance tasks scattered across the ship or by identifying and ejecting every Impostor; Impostors win by killing enough Crewmates or by sabotaging the ship.[5]

Tasks are reworked as short hand-interaction mini-games suited to motion controllers, and players move through the ship in real time, which means an Impostor can be physically seen committing a kill or climbing out of a vent.[6] When a body is found or an emergency button is pressed, players gather for a meeting and vote on who to eject. In its UploadVR review, the discussion phase was described as a step between text-based and in-person play, because voice chat lets participants read body language and vocal cues such as stumbling over words or averting their gaze.[6] The game supports cross-platform multiplayer across all of its VR versions, but it does not connect to lobbies of the flatscreen Among Us.[6][3]

The launch build shipped with a single map, Skeld 2, a VR remake of the original game's Skeld ship.[2] A second map, Polus Point, was added as a free update on July 27, set in a lava environment with nine rooms, additional tasks, and new kill and ejection animations.[7]

Development

The game is built in the Unity engine and was developed by Schell Games, a Pittsburgh-based studio, in collaboration with Among Us creator Innersloth and the production company Robot Teddy.[5][2] It was announced at The Game Awards 2021 with a reveal trailer, which named Meta Quest 2, Steam, and PlayStation VR as target platforms.[8] An open beta with sign-ups ran in August 2022 ahead of the November launch.[9]

Reception

On the aggregator Metacritic, the game holds a score of 82 out of 100 (generally favorable) based on eight critic reviews, with individual scores including 90 from Inverse, 85 from DualShockers, 80 from IGN and Android Central, and 78 from Everyeye.it.[10] UploadVR labeled it "Recommended," calling the adaptation "top tier VR design" and writing that it "successfully completes its task of adapting the game so many have come to know with excellent sound, lighting, and interaction design," while noting that the launch was light on content and its longevity would depend on the player base.[6]

Commercially, Innersloth, Schell Games, and Robot Teddy reported that the game passed one million units sold in under ten weeks of release.[4] By that point it had been played more than four million times by players in 122 countries, averaging about 44,000 matches per day and more than 89 million minutes of cumulative play.[4] On PlayStation VR2 it ranked among the most-downloaded titles in the US and Canada in 2024.[5]

The game won Best Social Gaming Experience at the 2023 Webby Awards.[5] It was nominated for Best VR/AR Game at The Game Awards 2022, for VR Game of the Year at the 2023 Steam Awards, and for Immersive Reality Technical Achievement at the 26th D.I.C.E. Awards.[5]
