Vox Machinae is a mech combat simulation game developed and published by Space Bullet Dynamics Corporation, an independent studio in Vancouver, Canada. It is a VR App for the Oculus Rift (Platform), SteamVR and Meta Quest 2 and later Quest headsets, and it can also be played on a standard PC monitor. Players pilot "Grinders", giant walking machines converted from mining equipment, and operate them through a cockpit of levers, sticks and switches that VR players grab with their hands.[1][2][3]
The game began as a demo for the DK1 and DK2 development kits, released on Oculus Share in December 2014.[4] It entered early access on Steam and the Oculus Store on 26 September 2018 as a multiplayer game, gained a single-player campaign and a Quest 2 version with its version 1.0 update on 3 March 2022, and left Steam Early Access on 13 May 2022.[5][6][7] In 2015 it won Best Independent Experience at the Proto Awards.[8]
Gameplay
Players control a Grinder from a seated cockpit. Its main controls are a throttle, a turn stick and a jump jet lever, which VR players grab and move with motion controllers; the jump jet lever is pulled up to fire the jets and then pushed in a direction to thrust that way. Weapons are aimed mostly with the head and fired in up to four fire groups mapped to the controller's triggers and face buttons. Each Grinder also has a scope that drops a magnified display into the cockpit for long-range shots. Larger Grinders are slow to build up speed, jump jet fuel regenerates over time, and firing too much overheats the machine and forces an emergency shutdown. The game has no lock-on weapons.[3]
Other cockpit details include a velocity gauge, a horn with a different sound for each Grinder, and a CB-style radio microphone that players pick up to speak to teammates; the speaker's avatar is shown on a small cockpit display.[3] The 2018 motion-control version also added an ejection handle and cockpit displays that players can rearrange.[9] Non-VR players use a gamepad or keyboard and mouse, and the Oculus Rift store page also lists flight sticks among the supported controllers.[10][11]
Multiplayer
Multiplayer matches hold up to 16 players and can be played offline, on a local network or online, with drop-in play. VR and non-VR players can play together, and the PC and Quest versions support cross-play.[1][3][12] The Steam page highlights three team modes:[1]
- Salvage: teams recover and protect the large Decker machine.
- Stockpile: teams try to hold the most factories on the map and gain the benefits of their production.
- HoverBrawl: a soccer-style mode, redesigned in June 2022 so that a player can tether to the ball and carry it to destroy the enemy factory.[13]
All modes can be played with two to four teams, and bots can fill empty slots in every mode.[1] Two co-op modes for up to four players were added in 2019: Convoy, in which players escort three supply trucks along a route against enemy mechs, and Bot Stomp, a wave-based mode with rising difficulty and stronger Elite and Guardian enemies.[14][15] In its 2022 review, Road to VR counted six game modes, seven maps, seven Grinders and 23 weapons and modules in multiplayer, with all content unlocked from the start.[3]
Players choose a Grinder chassis, assign weapons such as lasers, missiles and cannons, and fit passive and active modules.[1] The Steam description lists seven chassis; after the April 2024 update made the Decker playable, the Meta Horizon Store page lists eight.[1][12][16] The developer states that the game has no loot boxes or microtransactions.[1]
Campaign
The single-player campaign added in version 1.0 takes place in the Serus system. The player is a member of Horizon Corporate's security unit, protecting the company's mining operations from a hostile force.[1] Between missions the player walks around the transport ship The Competence, the campaign hub, and talks to a fully voiced crew.[3][6] Space Bullet described the campaign as about ten hours or more of play, with large boss battles and a giant walking mining machine called the RIG.[6] Road to VR mentioned a zero-gravity mission through minefields and a race in the flight-focused Overhaul Grinder; it also noted that the campaign hands out Grinders and weapons per mission rather than unlocking them through progression.[3]
Development
Space Bullet Dynamics Corporation was founded on 12 July 2010 in Vancouver by Jakub Czeszejko-Sochacki, Josh Enes and Alexander Gorshkov, who met at Vancouver Film School and had worked at studios including Electronic Arts and Radical Entertainment. Its first game was the stealth-action strategy game Signal Ops.[2] In an interview with Oculus, Czeszejko-Sochacki said the studio adapted an early Vox Machinae prototype to the DK1 and then committed to making it "VR-first". He named MechWarrior 2 and the film Robot Jox as influences and described an aim for a 1980s retro science-fiction look.[17]
DK1 and DK2 demo
The studio announced the game on 12 December 2014, after showing it at the SVVR (Silicon Valley Virtual Reality) holiday party, with further showings planned for VRLA on 13 December and Full Indie Vancouver on 16 December.[18] The VR demo followed on 15 December 2014 for the Oculus Rift DK1 and DK2. It contained a training mission and a combat mission.[4] In a hands-on preview on the DK2, Road to VR described gamepad controls with aiming by looking at targets, weapon overheating that caused a temporary shutdown, and unpolished enemy animation in the early build.[19] By August 2015 the demo had been downloaded 30,000 times through Oculus Share.[20] According to Czeszejko-Sochacki, the demo's reception led Oculus to contact the studio, and Space Bullet then received one of Oculus's first content grants.[17] On 22 September 2015 the game won Best Independent Experience at the Proto Awards, held at the Avalon Hollywood.[8]
Move to multiplayer and motion controls
After a long period with few public updates, Space Bullet presented a version rebuilt for motion controllers in January 2018 and opened sign-ups for a closed beta.[9] The game was shown at Oculus's Game Days event during PAX East in Boston in April 2018.[17][21] In August 2018 the studio announced cross-play between VR and non-VR players, support for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality, and play between Oculus Store and Steam owners. The announcement noted that the game had supported each control scheme of VR's history, from mouse and keyboard on the DK1 and DK2 to a gamepad at the Rift's launch and later motion controllers.[10] Czeszejko-Sochacki said that the team of three developers had moved the focus to multiplayer because it could not make single-player and multiplayer at the same time without losing quality. Composer Brent Silk wrote a synthesizer-based score.[17]
Campaign and Quest 2 port
By August 2020 the studio had hired three more employees and was working toward a version 1.0, but would not give details.[14] On 3 February 2022 Space Bullet revealed that it had been building a single-player campaign for more than two years, to be released free as part of version 1.0.[22][23] Road to VR reported that the team had three full-time developers at the 2018 early access launch and had grown to six full-time developers and three contractors during campaign development.[24]
The Quest 2 version was announced on 17 February 2022.[25] In a development post, Space Bullet wrote that the game could not run on the original Oculus Quest even at its lowest settings. After Oculus backed the idea of a Quest 2 port, the studio cut Grinder models from 50K triangles to 5K-10K triangles and reworked textures. It wrote that frame rates only became stable once it "completely remove[d] Unity's physics system".[26] The studio later said that physics had behaved differently since version 1.0 because the game now used a different physics engine, a switch that was needed for Quest 2. It reworked the physics again in November 2022.[27]
Release
Space Bullet announced on 13 September 2018 that the game would enter early access on Steam and the Oculus Store that autumn.[28] It launched on 26 September 2018, when its immediate worldwide release on both stores was announced during the Oculus Connect 5 keynote.[5][29] According to UploadVR, the early access version had five mechs, five maps, ten weapons and four modes: free-for-all, deathmatch, Salvage and Stockpile.[29] The studio's press kit gives its price as US$24.99.[2]
Version 1.0 and the Quest 2 version were released on 3 March 2022, priced at US$29.99.[30][3] The Meta store sells it with cross-buy between Quest and Rift.[31] The version 1.0 announcement gave 10 March 2022 as the planned date for leaving Steam Early Access, together with a price increase.[6] The Steam release finally happened on 13 May 2022; the studio said it had waited so it could add Steam trading cards and several patches.[7] An official soundtrack by Brent Silk was released on Steam on 3 March 2022 as paid downloadable content.[32] The game is also listed on Viveport, and the developer offers commercial licences through Steam's PC Cafe program and as perpetual licences.[33][31]

Reception
In its December 2014 preview of the DK2 demo, Road to VR wrote that the game "just makes sense in VR" and that head-based aiming felt "satisfyingly accurate".[19] When the game entered early access, UploadVR's Jamie Feltham singled out its interactive cockpit.[29] In 2020, Road to VR's Ben Lang called it "perhaps the most immersive VR mech game to date".[14]
The Road to VR and UploadVR reviews of version 1.0 both praised the mech piloting and criticized the campaign's story sequences. Road to VR scored the game 7 out of 10, writing that it "does perhaps the best job of any VR game to date at selling the feeling of being in a big-ass mech", and praised the jump jet lever and the cross-play multiplayer. It criticized the voice acting, animation, writing and pacing of the ship sequences and found the Quest 2 version's environmental detail "chopped down significantly", though it ran well. Its comfort notes said that turning in Grinders is smooth only, with no snap-turn option.[3] In UploadVR's review, Feltham called the campaign "an appreciated if flawed addition to an already-fun multiplayer mech combat title" whose "plodding pacing and padded story elements slow your progress to a crawl", and called the game "a scrappy underdog, but one that's very much worth rooting for".[47]
Metacritic lists three critic reviews: scores of 70 from Road to VR and 60 from GMW3, and an unscored UploadVR entry. That is fewer than the four reviews it needs for a Metascore.[48] As of October 2026, user reviews on Steam are rated "Very Positive", and the Meta Horizon Store version has an average of 4.2 out of 5 from 505 ratings.[1][12]
