Transformers: Beyond Reality is a single-player, arcade-style on-rails virtual reality shooter set in Hasbro's Transformers universe, developed and published by the Montreal studio Meta4 Interactive under license from Hasbro. The player is a human recruit in an experimental exosuit who fights alongside Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Grimlock and the other Autobots against Megatron and the Decepticons on Earth and Cybertron.[1][2]

The game was released for the original PlayStation VR on September 1, 2022, after a delay from its planned March 2022 launch, and an enhanced PlayStation VR2 version followed on May 9, 2023.[3][4] A revised version, Transformers: Beyond Reality Redux, developed with the studio Illogika, launched on Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S on September 10, 2026.[2][5] Reviews of all three versions were largely negative; critics faulted the shooting and the small number of enemy types.[6][7]

Gameplay

Transformers: Beyond Reality is an on-rails shooter: the game moves the player through each level, and the player aims and fires with tracked motion controllers.[8][7] In the story, the Decepticons have found an unstable and corrupting power source called Synthetic Dark Energon. The player wears an exosuit built from a hybrid of Cybertronian and human technology and uses upgradeable Cybertronian weapons, including miniguns, beam guns, swords, shields and laser blasters. The store listing names Shockwave, Megatron, Starscream and Soundwave among the Decepticon bosses and describes swarms of Insecticons as enemies.[9]

The campaign has six levels, each ending in a boss battle. In its review, TheSixthAxis put each level at about ten to fifteen minutes and counted three exosuit types with different weapon sets and five enemy types. The story mode has five difficulty levels, and a separate arcade mode offers endless play.[8][10] UploadVR's review of the Quest version describes shield blocking, sword deflection and dodging alongside the shooting.[7]

On PlayStation 5, the PlayStation Store listing requires the PlayStation VR2 headset and PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, supports standing and room-scale play, and asks for a play area of at least 2 m by 2 m. The PlayStation 4 version requires PlayStation VR, the PlayStation Camera and a PlayStation Move controller. The PlayStation Store lists English and French as supported languages.[9]

Development

Meta4 Interactive is a Montreal game studio founded in 2010 as Minority Media, the developer of Papo & Yo and Time Machine VR.[2] Hasbro announced Transformers: Beyond Reality during the first day of its virtual Hasbro Pulse Con event in October 2021 with a trailer, naming PlayStation VR and SteamVR as platforms. UploadVR noted at the time that, unlike the location-based Transformers: VR Invasion, it was intended for home release.[11] The game's website credits the Canada Media Fund as a supporter.[1]

PlayStation VR2 version

The PlayStation VR2 version added more detail to models and textures, stronger reflections and new atmospheric and visual effects. Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Meta4's vice president of business development Michael Zaidan said the team added or enhanced more than 30 gameplay moments and cinematics, many of which were made interactive. The on-screen ammo counter was replaced by resistance in the controllers' adaptive triggers when a reload is due, and haptic feedback in the headset tells players when they are hit by attacks from off-screen, after the team found that red screen flashes it had tried were not effective.[12][4]

Redux

Transformers: Beyond Reality Redux was developed by Meta4 Interactive with Illogika, under license from Hasbro, and its development was supported by the Canada Media Fund.[2] Meta4 describes it as an expanded version of the original that adds features based on player feedback. The changes listed in the launch announcement are:[2]

  • new enemies and a new player attack
  • rebalanced combat with more varied encounters and a dynamic difficulty curve
  • a redesigned progression system that rewards skilled play
  • a streamlined upgrade system with a more noticeable effect on gameplay
  • mastery challenges that unlock the Hard and Brutal difficulty modes

In the announcement, Meta4 chief operating officer Eric Plante said that as children the team had imagined "being the human fighting beside the Autobots, like Spike or Daniel".[2]

Release

Transformers: Beyond Reality was first scheduled for March 31, 2022, on PlayStation VR and SteamVR.[13] A day before that date, Meta4 postponed the game indefinitely. In August 2022 the studio set a September 1 release on PlayStation VR only; Road to VR reported that the studio no longer had plans for the previously announced PC VR version, and Meta4 said it was "working with our friends at Sony as a PSVR exclusive".[3][14]

The PlayStation VR2 version launched without advance notice on May 9, 2023, at US$24.99, and owners of the PlayStation VR version received it at no extra cost.[4][12] The Quest version was revealed at the Summer 2026 VR Games Showcase on June 23, 2026, with a September 3 release date; the showcase listing named Squido Studio as publisher, while UploadVR's review lists Meta4 Interactive as publisher of the released game.[15][16] On September 3, UploadVR reported that the release had been rescheduled to September 10, and Meta4 confirmed the September 10 launch in a press release on September 4, 2026.[5][2]

Version Platform Release date Launch price (US)
Transformers: Beyond Reality PlayStation VR (PlayStation 4) September 1, 2022[6]
Transformers: Beyond Reality PlayStation VR2 (PlayStation 5) May 9, 2023[4] $24.99[4]
Transformers: Beyond Reality Redux Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S September 10, 2026[2] $19.99[7][17]

The PlayStation Store rates the game ESRB Everyone 10+ for fantasy violence, and the Meta Horizon Store lists the Redux version under the shooter, arcade and action genres.[9][17]

Reception

Reviews of the PlayStation versions were negative. Metacritic lists one critic review and no Metascore.[6] TheSixthAxis gave the PlayStation VR version 4/10; it found the game repetitive and flat and criticized the small number of enemy types given the size of the Transformers cast, while noting that the harder modes were challenging and the last two levels were better.[8] Finger Guns, reviewing the PlayStation VR2 version, called it a wasted opportunity and described the weapon feedback as "limp and lifeless", though it found the controls and aiming accurate and liked the comic-book-style cutscenes.[10]

Publication Version reviewed Score
TheSixthAxis PlayStation VR 4/10[8]
Finger Guns PlayStation VR2 4/10[18]
UploadVR Redux (Meta Quest 3S) 2.5/5[7]

UploadVR's James Tocchio reviewed Redux on a Meta Quest 3S. He criticized the weak shooting, the small range of enemies and encounters, and visual downgrades compared with the PlayStation VR2 version, but wrote that the large scale of the Transformers and the familiar voices had some appeal for fans.[7]
