RealWear Navigator 520 is an augmented reality head-mounted display released in 2023. It is a rugged, voice-controlled headset made by RealWear for frontline workers in industrial settings, and the company describes it as an assisted reality device: a small monocular display on an adjustable boom arm places information just below the wearer's eyeline and leaves the view ahead unobstructed.[1][2] The headset can be worn around the head or attached to a hard hat.[1]
RealWear unveiled the Navigator 520 at CES in Las Vegas on 3 January 2023 as the successor to the RealWear Navigator 500.[3] According to RealWear, the main difference between the two models is the display. The 520 has a new viewing system called HyperDisplay with a 1280 x 720 resolution and a 24-degree field of view, compared with 854 x 480 and 20 degrees on the Navigator 500.[4][5] As of September 2026 the headset is still sold on RealWear's online store, where it is listed at US$3,150.[1]
Announcement and release
RealWear announced the Navigator 520 on 3 January 2023 at the Consumer Electronics Show. The company said the device kept the platform features of the Navigator 500 and replaced its standard-definition "Core Display" with the high-definition HyperDisplay.[3] In the launch press release, RealWear chief product officer Rama Oruganti said: "With the launch of RealWear Navigator 520 we've continued to put ourselves in the shoes of a modern frontline professional who wants to stay connected and empowered." The release also quoted Darren Crowder, head of TruServices and Smart Services at TRUMPF North America, a company offering manufacturing solutions in machine tools and laser technology, who said the larger display would help its customers "especially with identifying minute details during critical times."[3]
RealWear presented the device at a launch event called "Seeing is Believing", hosted by Aaron Cohen and Greg Bartholomew. In a blog post about the event, the company compared the device to a car dashboard: information sits just below the wearer's eyeline and the view ahead stays unobstructed.[2]
XR Today reported at CES that the Navigator 520 was available through official resellers for US$2,700 with a one-year warranty.[6] ARPost gave the same US$2,700 price and a price of US$2,300 for the Navigator 500. RealWear told ARPost by email that the price difference "isn't apples to apples", because it also reflects different warranties and support.[7] RealWear's datasheet for the device lists 12 months of its Service and Support Pack as included.[5] In September 2026 the RealWear online store listed the headset at US$3,150, with one, two or three years of Service and Support selectable at purchase.[1]
Owners of the Navigator 500 can have their devices upgraded to the HyperDisplay through a reseller, while the older RealWear HMT-1 cannot be upgraded to the Navigator series or the new display.[4]
Design and hardware
HyperDisplay
The HyperDisplay is a monocular microdisplay mounted in a pod at the end of a boom arm. The arm adjusts six ways to fit different head sizes, works with the left or right eye, and can be moved out of the way when the display is not in use.[5] RealWear says the display is 20% larger than the Navigator 500's, has twice the pixels, a five times larger eye box, and improved eye relief.[3] The company wrote that the pod holding the display is barely larger than the Navigator 500's, yet contains a 720p HD panel and four optical lenses.[8]
According to RealWear, the longer eye relief lets the screen sit farther from the face, which helps wearers of glasses or goggles, and the larger eye box keeps the display visible when the device vibrates or shifts slightly during work.[8] The display is opaque rather than see-through.[9]
RealWear's earlier datasheet describes the display as a 0.35-inch, 24-bit color LCD that is "outdoor visible".[5] RealWear's current specification page lists the display technology as Liquid crystal on silicon (full-color RGB).[9]
| Display specification | RealWear Navigator 500 | RealWear Navigator 520 |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | WVGA (854 x 480) | HD (1280 x 720) |
| Field of view | 20° | 24° |
| Eye relief | 20 mm | 30 mm |
| Eye box | 8 x 5 mm | 14 x 14 mm |
| Display size | 0.32 in | 0.35 in |
The comparison follows RealWear's Navigator 520 datasheet.[5]
Processor, memory and connectivity
The headset uses a 2.0 GHz eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 with an Adreno 610 GPU, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, plus a microSD slot for cards of up to 512 GB.[5][9] It supports dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 5.1. Satellite positioning covers GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, SBAS and NavIC, with dual-frequency GNSS (L1 + L5).[5] An optional 4G modem adds cellular connectivity.[3] The ports are one USB Type-C connector and a 3.5 mm audio jack.[9]
For head movement tracking, RealWear's earlier datasheet lists three IMUs including 3-axis accelerometers, gyroscopes and an eCompass.[5] RealWear's current specifications list a 3-axis gyroscope, 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis magnetometer, barometer, ambient light sensor and fingerprint sensor.[9] The fingerprint sensor is built into the power button; the device also has a programmable action button and left and right buttons.[5] Security features include the Qualcomm Trusted Execution Environment, a crypto engine and secure boot.[9] RealWear's support documentation gives the hardware model number as T21G, shared with the Navigator 500.[10]
Camera and thermal module
The camera is modular. At launch RealWear specified an upgradeable 48 MP camera system with phase-detection autofocus (PDAF), an LED flashlight, video up to 1080p at 60 fps, more than 6x zoom in HD and video stabilization.[3][5] RealWear's current specification page lists a 50 MP main camera (Sony LYT-600) with an 82-degree field of view and 1080p video at 60 fps. The store describes it as a tiltable camera that can be removed and replaced.[9][1]
The standard camera can be swapped for the Thermal Camera Module, which combines a 48 MP standard camera with a thermal sensor from Teledyne FLIR.[11] RealWear launched the module in 2022 as an accessory for the Navigator 500, before the Navigator 520 was announced. In a 29 November 2022 announcement, Teledyne FLIR said the module uses FLIR's Lepton 3.5 thermal camera module and FLIR's MSX imaging, which adds visible-light outlines to thermal images. Teledyne FLIR said it was the first commercially available system to use the Lepton 3.5 as a wearable for assisted reality diagnostics. Settings, modes and image capture are controlled by voice.[12] RealWear says all accessories made for the Navigator 500 also work with the Navigator 520.[4] In September 2026 RealWear listed the module at US$600; it is rated IP66 and measures temperatures from -20°C to 400°C.[11]
Audio and voice input
The Navigator 520 is operated mainly by voice commands. Four digital microphones with active noise cancellation support voice recognition in noise of up to 100 dBA, and the headset has an internal 94 dBA loudspeaker.[5] The store page describes two internal speakers.[1] At launch RealWear said the voice interface supported 23 languages and dialects.[3]
Battery, durability and fit
The 2,600 mAh (10.0 Wh) lithium-polymer battery is hot-swappable: it can be replaced in the field without powering the device down.[5][1] It charges over USB Type-C or in an external battery charger.[9]
The headset is rated IP66 and MIL-STD-810H, and RealWear's earlier datasheet lists a 2-meter (6.5-foot) drop rating.[5] The operating range differs between RealWear documents. The earlier datasheet gives -20°C to +50°C with 5% to 95% relative humidity, while the current specification page gives -20°C to 45°C with 10% to 80% humidity (non-condensing).[5][9] The weight is listed as 274 g (9.7 oz) in the datasheet and 270 g (9.5 oz) on the current specification page. The shell is made of LEXAN EXL9330.[5][9]
RealWear says the device works with helmets, safety or prescription eyewear, hearing protection and external headphones.[9] As of September 2026 the box contains the headset, a battery pack, Workband 2, a USB Type-C to Type-A cable and a quick start guide.[1]
Software and features
Operating system and updates
At launch the Navigator 520 ran Android 11 (AOSP) with RealWear's WearHF hands-free interface and enterprise features.[5] Built-in applications included a document navigator, a camera with barcode reader, audio and video recorders, a webpage viewer, cloud sync, a media player, a calculator, a pedometer and a timer.[5] RealWear warned that some apps would need optimization for the higher-resolution display, starting with native applications at launch.[4]
The Navigator 500 and 520 share firmware. RealWear's release notes list the following milestones:
| Release | Date | Main change |
|---|---|---|
| Firmware 2.0 (software version 2.0.3-23) | Early access 1 June 2025; general availability 1 July 2025 | Base Android update to Android 13, as a one-step upgrade that keeps user data[10] |
| Ari OS 2.0 maintenance release (firmware 3.0) | 17 September 2026 | Android 16, security patches through June 2026, the Ari OS user interface used on the RealWear Arc 3, and support for the Ari assistant[13] |
Ari OS is a voice-first operating system that RealWear introduced on 25 August 2026. RealWear said it understands natural language and intent, combines voice with visual information on the display, and connects to email, calendars, contacts and Microsoft Teams. When it was announced, Ari OS was available on the RealWear Navigator Z1, with support for other RealWear devices to follow in the coming months.[14] The Navigator 500/520 release notes say that users must consent to RealWear's terms during onboarding to use Ari, or can enable it later by saying "Hey Ari".[13] RealWear's current specification page lists the operating system as "Ari OS (Android 13)" and device management through Ari Cloud.[9]
Applications and management
RealWear said at launch that more than 200 partner apps were optimized for the device, covering remote collaboration, workflow and computer vision.[3] XR Today named Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Webex Expert on Demand among the collaboration tools available on the headset, along with RealWear Cloud, the company's device management service.[6] RealWear's launch event also highlighted HandsFree for Zoom and expanded Microsoft Intune support for managing fleets of devices.[2] RealWear pointed to training videos in workflow apps such as PTC's XpertCapture as one use of the larger display.[8]
Reception
Writing for ARPost, Jon Jaehnig noted that the Navigator 500 and 520 look very similar from the outside and that the visible hardware change is the improved eye relief. He suggested that companies with existing Navigator 500 fleets could replace units with 520s as needed instead of all at once, because both models accept the same modules and accessories.[7] XR Today called the HD display "a massive upgrade" over the Navigator 500.[6]
