RUSH: Apex Edition is a virtual reality wingsuit racing game developed and published by The Binary Mill for PlayStation VR2 on PlayStation 5. It is a remaster of RUSH, a wingsuit racer the studio first released on Gear VR in 2017 and later brought to Oculus Rift, SteamVR, PlayStation VR, Meta Quest and Pico headsets.[1][2]

The Apex Edition was released on 6 November 2025. Compared with the earlier PlayStation VR version, it has remastered visuals with new lighting, weather and textures, online races for up to 12 players instead of 8, proximity voice chat, PS VR2 headset and controller haptics, and a frame rate of 90 fps on a standard PS5 and 120 fps on a PS5 Pro.[1][3] The Apex Edition launched only on PlayStation VR2, while the older versions of RUSH remained available on PC VR, Pico, PlayStation VR and Quest.[2]

Gameplay

Players jump from a high precipice in a wingsuit and fly down mountainsides, through narrow canyons and under rock arches toward a finish line.[3] In its hands-on, UploadVR described the flight controls: players raise both arms to climb, lower them to descend, and alternate their arm positions to turn. Speed boosts are earned by passing through checkpoints or by flying close to walls and the ground.[2] In the original game, flying dangerously close to obstacles filled a boost meter.[4]

UploadVR listed four solo modes. Race pits the player against AI opponents and awards medals for a top-three finish, which convert into points that unlock more courses and wingsuit customization options; Time Attack asks players to beat their own times; Score Challenge gives a higher score for flying through a particular part of each checkpoint ring; and Free Flight lets players explore without a set course.[2] The PlayStation Store listing gives more than 90 tracks across the game's environments, with weather and time-of-day effects, global online leaderboards, online races against up to 11 other players, and proximity chat.[3] Online play on PS5 requires a PlayStation Plus subscription.[3]

The store page lists sitting, standing and roomscale play styles and PS VR2 Sense controllers as optional; it notes that roomscale PlayStation VR2 games need a play area of at least 2 m by 2 m. Headset vibration and controller vibration are also listed as optional features.[3]

Background

The Binary Mill is an independent game studio on the Gold Coast, Australia, founded in 2008. Its other VR games include Gun Club VR, Resist, Mini Motor Racing X and Into Black.[1] The studio lists RUSH with a release date of 25 May 2017.[5]

The original RUSH first launched on Gear VR and later became available on Oculus Go.[2][6] The Rift version was released on 10 May 2018. In a post on the Oculus blog that day, The Binary Mill studio director Ingmar Lak said it added Touch controller support, six degrees of freedom head tracking, a real-time day and night cycle with dynamic weather including rain, snow and thunderstorms, and multiplayer for up to 12 people. The same post said the game had topped Digital Trends' list of the best Gear VR games.[6] A PC VR version followed on Steam on 13 July 2018.[7]

The game reached PlayStation VR on 4 December 2018 in North America and Europe, priced at US$25, 20 GBP or 25 EUR, with a 20% discount for PlayStation Plus members during its first two weeks.[4] According to Road to VR, that version had more than 80 tracks across four environments, dozens of unlockable wingsuits, and lobby toys such as nerf guns, basketballs, beach balls and paddles for players waiting for a match. It supported PlayStation Move controllers, the DualShock 4 (tilt or analog sticks), and head-tilt gaze controls.[4] In a PlayStation Blog post the day before launch, The Binary Mill community manager Jason Spencer wrote that players could jump together with up to seven others.[8]

Later store listings for the original game describe five environments and more than 100 mountain paths. The Steam listing gives online races for up to 12 players, and the Meta Quest listing gives four-player online races and enhancements for Meta Quest 2 such as higher-resolution textures.[7][9]

Development

The Binary Mill describes the Apex Edition as fully remastered from the ground up for PlayStation VR2. Its launch announcement lists new lighting, weather and atmospheric effects, spatial audio, adaptive trigger and headset haptics support, and the larger 12-player online races.[1] The PlayStation Store description adds that the lighting is new global illumination and that skies, scene density and textures were also redone. The game carries the "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label.[3]

In the announcement, Jason Spencer said the studio "wanted to revisit one of our most-loved VR experiences and give it the full next-gen treatment it deserves", and that it had "fine-tuned every element for PSVR2 - from the visuals to the feel of flight - to make it the definitive version of RUSH."[1]

Release

RUSH: Apex Edition was released on the PlayStation Store on 6 November 2025.[1][3]

Platform Release date Price at access date Notes
PlayStation VR2 (PlayStation 5) 6 November 2025 US$19.99 (US store); 15.99 GBP (UK store) PS5 Pro Enhanced; up to 12 online players with PS Plus[3][10]

The US store page lists English voice and on-screen text in Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai. Its ESRB rating is Everyone, with a "Users Interact" notice.[3] UploadVR noted that PlayStation VR2 lacks backward compatibility with the original PlayStation VR and welcomed more games getting "a second life" on the newer headset.[2]

Reception

In its hands-on, published on release day, UploadVR called the remaster "a great remaster effort from The Binary Mill that's the best way to play," and praised the revamped lighting and textures. Reviewer Henry Stockdale also found that the courses in each environment "begin feeling very similar after a while". He called the use of a gaze pointer instead of eye tracking for the launch sequence "a missed opportunity" and said that it and the arm-based control scheme show the game's "aging foundations". He concluded that "RUSH's aging gameplay makes it a harder recommendation in 2025."[2]

As of 7 October 2026, Metacritic lists no critic reviews for the PS5 version, so it has no Metascore.[11] On the US PlayStation Store, the game held an average player rating of 4.65 out of 5 from 350 ratings on the same date.[3]

The original game's Metacritic page lists three critic reviews, all of the PlayStation 4 (PlayStation VR) version, which is not enough for a Metascore: Video Chums gave it 80, Cubed3 60 and TheSixthAxis 50.[12]
