Puzzling Places is a 3D jigsaw puzzle game developed and published by Realities.io, a Berlin studio that works with photogrammetry. Each puzzle is a miniature of a real building or landscape, built from a 3D scan and broken into pieces that the player reassembles in virtual reality or, since 2026, on a flat screen.[1][2] The game began as a single-puzzle prototype on SideQuest in April 2020, went through a free beta on App Lab and reached the Oculus Quest store on September 2, 2021 at US$14.99.[3][1]
It has since been released for PlayStation VR (December 14, 2021), PlayStation VR2 (February 22, 2023, as a launch title), PICO headsets, Apple Vision Pro (February 2, 2024) and Steam (April 9, 2026), where it added a non-VR desktop mode and Steam Deck support.[4][5][6][7] The developer supports the game with paid puzzle packs released on a monthly schedule since March 2022, and with free feature updates that have added passthrough play, hand tracking, two-player online co-op and a guided "Journey Mode".[8][9][10]
Puzzling Places won the Entertainment category at the VR NOW Awards in June 2021 and was a nominee for Immersive Reality Technical Achievement at the 25th D.I.C.E. Awards in February 2022.[11][12]
Gameplay
Each puzzle is a 3D diorama of a real place. In the standard "Classic Mode" the player receives every piece at once, sorts them and joins matching pieces until the model is complete.[2][13] Unlike a flat jigsaw, the pieces have volume and depth, and there is no table: pieces are not subject to gravity and float where the player leaves them.[13][14] Pieces are pulled to the hand with a "force-pull" gesture rather than picked up by walking to them, and a "repacker" tool tidies loose pieces.[15][14] There are no timers, scores or fail states.[2]
Every puzzle can be played at several piece counts. At launch the options were 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 pieces; the October 2023 "Big Update" introduced 1,000-piece versions of some puzzles on Quest 2 and later, while the original Quest was capped at 400 pieces for performance reasons.[16][9] A "Simple Mode" added in version 1.17 (December 2022) lets a large puzzle be tackled in sections, and the December 2025 update added "Journey Mode", which starts from a single central piece and hands out a small batch of pieces at a time.[17][10]
Sound is part of the design. Each diorama has a soundscape that is revealed progressively as pieces are connected, with individual effects tied to objects in the scene, such as creaking floorboards.[13][15] The game can be played seated, standing or at room scale.[16][18]
Mixed reality and input
An experimental passthrough mode arrived on Quest in version 1.9 (June 2022), and the game was a launch title for the Meta Quest Pro on October 25, 2022 with full-color passthrough.[17][19] The October 2023 update brought hand tracking with an in-game tutorial, eye-tracking piece selection on Quest Pro, a quality-versus-frame-rate setting on Meta Quest 3, and a local mixed reality multiplayer mode for Quest 3 that combines passthrough with Meta's Shared Spatial Anchors.[9] The developer stated that on Quest 3 the game renders at 1.5 times the target resolution with 4x MSAA.[9] Hand tracking was reworked in December 2025 with poke, drag and throw-back gestures.[10]
On PICO 4 a color passthrough mode was added on May 4, 2023 (black-and-white on PICO Neo 3).[20] The Vision Pro version was redesigned around the headset's gaze-and-pinch input: pieces are selected by looking at them and tapping, then attached to a central piece from a shelf, and the app runs as a visionOS "volume" that can sit alongside other apps in the Shared Space.[6][21]
Multiplayer
Two-player online co-op reached Quest in October 2023 and PlayStation VR2 on May 2, 2024, with crossplay between Quest, PICO and PS VR2 players; PlayStation Plus is required on PS VR2.[9][22] On Steam, co-op is limited to VR play.[2] A "Guest Pass" added on Quest in September 2026 lets players who do not own the game join a session as guests; guests cannot host.[23]
Content and puzzle packs
The Quest version launched with 16 puzzles.[16][15] Since March 2022 Realities.io has released a Monthly Pack, typically six puzzles for about US$5, alongside occasional themed premium packs of four puzzles with custom soundscapes.[8] The developer states that new packs arrive on the first Thursday of every month.[24] Monthly Pack #47, released September 3, 2026 at US$4.99, contained six puzzles including a Swiss brewery and Bulgarian brutalist towers at up to 1,000 pieces.[23] Free puzzles have been added for occasions such as Lunar New Year 2023 and, on September 17, 2026, a "Gardens of Babylon" scene created with Mighty Coconut from a Walkabout Mini Golf course.[17][25]
On Meta Quest, a "Puzzle Pass" subscription at US$4.99 per month gives access to every add-on pack released on that platform.[26] The Steam store listed 71 downloadable content packs in September 2026, after the developer brought its back catalog of packs to that platform; with the 2022 packs added on September 10, 2026, the Steam library reached parity with the Quest library.[2][27] By April 2025 the library covered more than 30 dioramas on the base platforms, and the developer said the game had more than 400,000 players.[28] The December 2025 update refreshed the base lineup with four remastered puzzles, while some older base puzzles moved into a "Puzzling Places Classics" bundle that existing owners kept.[29]
A free "Puzzle Maker" tool for Steam owners, released September 10, 2026, converts images, 3D scans and models into 2D or 3D puzzles that can be shared through the Steam Workshop.[27][2]
Development
Realities.io is a photogrammetry studio founded in 2016 and based in Berlin, with a second office in San Mateo, California. It previously released the free VR travel app Realities on Steam and produced VR films such as Home After War and The Key.[30][31][28][32] According to co-founder Daniel Sproll, the puzzle idea came from an accident in the studio's pipeline: an import error jumbled the pieces of one of the studio's photogrammetry meshes, and the team decided to build a game around reassembling them.[13][1]
The first prototype, featuring the Tatev Monastery in Armenia, was released on SideQuest in April 2020.[30][15] A free beta followed on App Lab in February 2021, where the game was among the first twelve titles on the new distribution channel, and a Patreon campaign funded weekly test puzzles for about a year and a half; some 60 puzzles were produced this way.[1][15][3] At launch the team numbered six people, including photogrammetry lead Azad Balabanian, programmer and art director Shahriar Shahrabi and audio designer Pierre-Marie Blind.[3][1]
Puzzles are built from high-resolution scans captured with DSLR cameras, drones, aircraft and LiDAR scanners, and from scans sourced on Sketchfab. The source models can contain hundreds of millions of polygons; they are cleaned up, decimated and retopologized, textures are baked, and the optimized mesh is cut into pieces so that it runs on a standalone headset.[1][30] In May 2024 the developer said it planned to migrate the game from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 as part of backend work.[22]
Support for the original Oculus Quest ended on March 6, 2024 because newer Meta SDKs no longer targeted the headset; Quest 1 owners kept the last compatible version and their purchased packs.[33] The PC version was announced in April 2025 for early 2026, with a flat-screen mode, Steam Deck support and cross-device progress; it launched on April 9, 2026 after a free demo in March.[28][34][35] The September 2026 "Birthday Update", marking five years since the Quest store release, added weekly puzzles and full passthrough support on Quest, a passthrough fade slider on Quest, PICO and Steam Frame, and an in-game news carousel.[23]

Reception
Road to VR scored the Quest version 8 out of 10 (gameplay 8, immersion 8, comfort 9.5), praising the lifelike photogrammetry while criticizing the abstract hand models, repetitive ambient sounds and the small launch library.[16] UploadVR rated it "Great", calling it one of the best puzzle games on the platform and praising the scans and the force-pull controls, but noted the lack of hand tracking at launch and the limited number of puzzles.[15] On OpenCritic the game has a Top Critic Average of 80 with 100 percent of six critics recommending it; on Metacritic the PlayStation 5 version holds 78 from five reviews.[38][39] Push Square gave the PS VR2 version 7 out of 10, reporting repeated crashes during testing while calling it "PSVR2 at its most relaxed" once patched.[39]
Store ratings have been high: the Meta Quest listing showed 4.8 out of 5 stars from about 2,800 reviews in September 2026, and the Steam version was rated "Very Positive" with 97 percent of 151 user reviews positive.[40][2]
