Realities is a free VR exploration application developed and published by realities.io. It presents real-world locations as 3D environments built with photogrammetry, which the player walks through in room-scale or standing VR. It was released on Steam on 5 April 2016, the launch day of the HTC Vive, and runs on Windows with the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift through SteamVR.[1][2] As of October 2026 it is still listed on Steam.[1]

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Developer, publisher, release date, platforms, locations, update details and Steam review summary checked against the Steam listing and two Road to VR articles About review dates.

Overview

Realities lets the player visit scanned real places such as Death Valley, the Cologne Cathedral, the Beelitz Heilstaetten hospital complex in Germany, a cell in Alcatraz and the ruins of a medieval Staufer castle, according to its Steam listing.[1] The environments are built as 3D geometry rather than as 360-degree photos or video, so the player can move around inside them instead of viewing them from a fixed point.[2] At launch the application contained about five locations, and its menu used an interactive globe built from NASA data, which the player turned and zoomed with the Vive controllers.[2] The Steam listing also notes that commentary is available.[1]

The application was made with Unreal Engine 4.[3] Oculus Rift support was planned for a later release.[2] A March 2017 update added six locations in California's Death Valley with new audio, improved Oculus Rift and Touch controller support, and a switch to forward rendering that allowed 4x MSAA anti-aliasing on minimum-spec PCs.[3] The Steam listing now states that both the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift are supported.[1]

Reception

Steam user reviews were rated Mostly Positive as of October 2026, with 201 of 269 reviews positive.[4]
