Oppo Air Glass (styled OPPO Air Glass) is an augmented reality head-mounted display released in 2022. It is a monocular display module made by Oppo that attaches magnetically to a separate glasses frame and shows text and simple graphics in front of one eye through a diffractive optical waveguide lens. OPPO calls the product an "assisted reality" (aR) device. It displays information such as notifications, calendar entries, navigation directions, translations and teleprompter text.

OPPO announced Air Glass at its INNO Day 2021 event on 14 December 2021. It went on sale in mainland China on 3 March 2022 at a price of 4,999 yuan (about US$791 at the time). OPPO described it as the company's first extended reality (XR) product to become commercially available. The module weighs about 30 g and runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 platform.

Design

Air Glass has two parts: the main unit, which holds all of the electronics in a single temple arm with the waveguide lens attached, and a separate frame to which the unit is attached magnetically. OPPO says the shape of the monocular waveguide lens was inspired by the wings of a cicada, in place of the round or rounded-rectangle lenses of ordinary glasses. The company's Chinese product page gives a lens thickness of 1.45 mm.

The main unit came in two colors, Black Mirror and Silver Wing. OPPO offered two frame styles, a silver half-frame and a black full-frame, each in two sizes; the full-frame is intended for wearers who need corrective lenses. According to OPPO's product page, users with myopia, astigmatism or other vision problems in the right eye need to wear the device with the matching corrective glasses, and the device is recommended for people whose dominant eye is the right eye.

In its review, ZOL wrote that the temple houses the projector, main circuit board, chip, touch panel, battery, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas, two microphones and a speaker. The review also reported that OPPO had run human-factors tests on long-term wearing comfort with the China National Institute of Standardization.

Display and optics

The display system is built around OPPO's self-developed Spark Micro Projector, which OPPO says has a volume of 0.5 cc, "roughly the size of a coffee bean". The projector uses a Micro-LED panel with a brightness of up to 3 million nits, according to OPPO. GSMArena reported that the projector uses five glass lens elements. OPPO's Chinese product and specification pages list a 0.13-inch silicon-based Micro LED display with a resolution of 640*480, a 4 μm pixel size, a 4:3 aspect ratio, a 60 Hz refresh rate and a single green color.

The image is carried to the eye by a custom diffractive optical waveguide encased in sapphire glass. The waveguide supports two display modes, with 16-level and 256-level grayscale. OPPO lists the field of view as 28 degrees.

OPPO has published different brightness figures. Its December 2021 announcement said the waveguide "can deliver up to 1400 nits in average brightness". The later Chinese product and specification pages give rated maximum full-field average brightness values of 450 nits in the default mode and 1000 nits in an outdoor strong-light mode.

OPPO's product page states that the glasses alone last up to 3 hours in a simulated daily-use test, and about 10.5 hours when topped up from the portable charging dock. The dock itself is shaped like a wing and holds the glasses while they charge, according to ZOL.

Controls and features

Air Glass supports four ways of interacting with it: touch, voice, hand motions and head movements. A touch strip on the temple accepts taps, double taps, long presses and forward and backward swipes. Hand motions made while wearing an OPPO Watch 2 can confirm, cancel or switch between application cards, and a nod opens a notification while a shake of the head closes it. ZOL attributed head-movement recognition to the device's inertial measurement unit, made up of an accelerometer and a gyroscope.

The built-in applications are Weather, Calendar, Health, Teleprompter, Translation and Navigation.

In the translation feature, speech from one person is translated into text in the target language and displayed on the other person's Air Glass. Mandarin-English translation was available at launch, with Mandarin-Japanese and Mandarin-Korean announced for later. ZOL reported that two Air Glass users pair their phones through NFC to start a translated conversation, and that a person without Air Glass can instead speak into the wearer's phone.

Walking and cycling directions come from Baidu Walk & Bike Navigation, and an "Explore Nearby" function shows location-based information. According to ZOL, Explore Nearby lists places within 1 km, which the wearer browses by turning the head. The teleprompter shows a speech imported on the phone as text on the lens, with adjustable font size and position, and pages can be turned with gestures through the OPPO Watch.

Compatibility

At announcement, OPPO said Air Glass would work with the OPPO Watch 2 and with OPPO smartphones running ColorOS 11 or later. The device is set up through a Smart Glass app on the phone. By March 2022, OPPO's Chinese product page listed support only for the Find X3 series, Find X5 series and Find N, with the Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition to be added in a later update. The page stated that other OPPO models and non-OPPO phones were not supported, and advised Find X3 users to update to ColorOS 12 or later.

Release

OPPO first said Air Glass would launch in the first quarter of 2022 in mainland China. In February 2022 the company confirmed a 3 March 2022 sale date in China at 4,999 yuan, in Black Mirror and Silver Wing colors with two custom frame kits.

OPPO showed Air Glass in North America for the first time at the Augmented World Expo USA 2022 in Santa Clara, where it was on display at the company's booth from 1 to 3 June 2022 alongside the OPPO AR Glass 2021 concept. Android Central reported that OPPO representatives described the showing as an effort to build awareness among US tech media and the XR community, and said the company had no immediate plans to expand sales to the United States.

Reception

BGR's Chris Smith wrote that the "assisted reality" experience would not resemble the augmented reality features people expect from such devices, and compared Air Glass to a refined version of Google Glass for reading quick information.

Writing from AWE 2022, Android Central's Michael L Hicks described Air Glass as a magnetically attached smart monocle that displays text in the wearer's vision but lacks the holographic capabilities of full augmented reality glasses, and likened it to Google Glass. He called it a relatively affordable AR device at 5,000 yuan (about US$750), cheaper by his count than Google Glass 2, the Lenovo ThinkReality A3 and Microsoft HoloLens 2. He also noted that it only worked with OPPO phones and the OPPO smartwatch, neither of which was sold in the United States.

ZOL's reviewer, a regular glasses wearer, reported no noticeable burden from the roughly 30 g device and said it stayed comfortable during long wear. The review called the teleprompter function very practical and said the navigation feature was more convenient for cyclists and hikers than checking a phone.

Successors

OPPO unveiled Air Glass 2 at INNO Day 2022 in December 2022. GSMArena reported that it weighs 38 g and uses a resin SRG diffractive waveguide lens that OPPO developed in-house and described as the world's first. At MWC 2024 on 26 February 2024, OPPO showed a prototype of a newer generation of its assisted reality glasses, the OPPO Air Glass 3, which weighs 50 g.
