OPPO Air Glass 2 is a pair of binocular assisted reality smart glasses developed by the Chinese smartphone maker Oppo. OPPO demonstrated it at its INNO DAY 2022 technology event on 14 December 2022, describing it as its latest "Assisted Reality glass".[1] The glasses weigh about 38 grams and show text and simple graphics through what OPPO calls the world's first resin SRG-diffractive waveguide lens, which it says it developed.[1]
Air Glass 2 succeeded the monocular Oppo Air Glass, announced in December 2021, which attached to a separate frame. The second model is a complete pair of glasses with a display for each eye, and its lenses can be made with vision correction.[2][3] OPPO showed working units at Mobile World Congress 2023, where GSMArena and Trusted Reviews described the device as a concept.[3][4] It never went on sale: when OPPO presented the OPPO Air Glass 3 prototype in February 2024, CNBC reported that Air Glass 2 "was not sold to the public".[5]
Announcement and showcases
INNO DAY 2022
OPPO held INNO DAY 2022 as an online event streamed live on 14 December 2022. Alongside Air Glass 2, it presented the OHealth H1 family health monitor and the MariSilicon Y Bluetooth audio chip.[1] OPPO said the glasses were "intended to demonstrate all-new possibilities in human-machine interaction".[1] Pocket-lint reported that OPPO gave no price or availability details at the event.[2] TechRadar's Hamish Hector noted that there was no word on a release date, a price, or whether the glasses would be sold outside China and Asia. He added that the first Air Glass had not received a global release.[6]
Mobile World Congress 2023
In a release dated 21 February 2023, OPPO announced that visitors to its MWC 2023 booth in Barcelona (27 February to 2 March 2023, Hall 3) would be able to try "the new generation of Assisted Reality smart glasses, OPPO Air Glass 2".[7] GSMArena and Trusted Reviews tried the glasses there. Both described Air Glass 2 as still at the concept stage, with no date for a commercial version.[3][4] In an interview reported by Trusted Reviews, OPPO did not give a development plan for the glasses. It explained instead that the Oppo Find N had gone through six iterations over four years before reaching the market.[4]
Design and hardware
Optics and display
The lenses are diffractive optical waveguides with surface relief gratings (SRG) made from resin rather than glass. OPPO describes the lens as the world's first resin SRG-diffractive waveguide lens and says it supports vision correction and further customization.[1] IT Home reported from the launch that the lenses could be ordered in plano, myopia (nearsighted prescription) and sunglass versions. According to the same report, the Spark micro optical engine is 40% smaller in volume than the one in the first-generation Air Glass. IT Home also wrote that Air Glass 2 might be the lightest and thinnest binocular smart glasses in the world.[8]
The near-eye display system came from Meta-Bounds (莫界科技), a Chinese startup founded in 2021. 36Kr reported that most smart glasses used glass-wafer diffractive waveguides. Meta-Bounds had instead solved the problems of working with resin wafers and cut the weight of its waveguides by more than 50%. According to the same report, 70 grams had long been a barrier for binocular smart glasses and 50 grams had been considered the technical limit.[9] A Nikkei report republished by Free Malaysia Today also credited the 38 g weight to Meta-Bounds' resin waveguide. It noted that resin waveguides have advantages over glass ones in safety and reliability.[10] Yanko Design described the lens as a joint development between OPPO and Meta-Bounds.[11]
Two MicroLED displays sit in the sides of the frame, one for each eye, and project into the waveguides at up to 1,000 nits per eye.[3] Yanko Design gave the size of each green microLED display as 0.13 inches.[11] Text and images appear in green; GSMArena wrote that all menus used a bright green font, and Trusted Reviews saw "all-green text and images" in its demo.[3][4]
Electronics and frame
GSMArena reported that the glasses use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 4100 platform and a 200 mAh battery rated for up to 3 hours of use. The battery recharges through magnetic pins at the back of the frames.[3] Yanko Design reported the same processor, battery capacity and battery life. It also described a magnesium-lithium alloy outer construction and said OPPO showed black and white frame variants.[11] OPPO gives the weight as about 38 grams; its 2021 release gave about 30 grams for the first Air Glass.[1][12]
GSMArena wrote that Air Glass 2 looks like an ordinary pair of reading glasses.[3] Trusted Reviews found the frames slightly thicker than typical glasses and said they felt like normal glasses on the face, despite the built-in battery and display.[4]
Software and features
Air Glass 2 works as a companion to a smartphone and needs no cable during use.[3] TechRadar wrote that it pairs wirelessly with an OPPO smartphone or smartwatch, unlike the cable-connected Nreal Air and Viture One.[6] OPPO lists phone calls, real-time translation, location-based navigation and voice-to-text conversion for people with hearing impairments among its functions.[1] IT Home also reported teleprompter and reminder functions.[8]
The wearer controls the interface with buttons on each side of the frame, according to GSMArena, and the glasses have speakers for audio.[3] Trusted Reviews described swipe and tap gestures on the right arm. Its demo menu offered weather, calendar, teleprompter, maps and translation; maps and translation were not yet available to try.[4]
Reception
Coverage at MWC 2023 was based on short demonstrations. Lewis Painter of Trusted Reviews called Air Glass 2 the first AR glasses he could see himself using. He contrasted its compact size with the big, bulky AR headsets he had seen at the show and called the touch gestures "surprisingly responsive". He wrote that the teleprompter text was easily legible while he talked to an OPPO representative, without the need to look up and to the left as with Google Glass.[4] The headline of Sarang Sheth's Yanko Design article called it "easily the most fashionably sleek AR wearable on display at MWC 2023".[11]
Status and successor
OPPO did not announce a price or release date for Air Glass 2,[2][3] and the glasses were not sold to the public.[5] At MWC 2024 on 26 February 2024, OPPO unveiled the OPPO Air Glass 3, a prototype that weighs 50 grams. It also uses a resin waveguide developed by OPPO, with a refractive index of 1.70, and connects to an OPPO smartphone.[13][5]
