Kizuna AI - Touch the Beat! is a virtual reality rhythm game featuring the virtual YouTuber Kizuna AI. Players watch her perform on stage and hit incoming notes in time with her songs using a penlight in each hand.[1][2] The game first launched as a free Oculus Quest title on 13 October 2020; it was planned by Kizuna AI Inc. and developed by Activ8 and Gemdrops.[3][4]

Gemdrops later developed and published an expanded paid version with 15 songs, a non-VR mode and a free-roaming View Mode. It was released for PlayStation 5 with PlayStation VR2 support on 22 February 2023, the day the headset launched, and for PlayStation 4 with PlayStation VR support, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam on 25 May 2023.[5][6]

Gameplay

The player is a member of the audience at Kizuna AI's stage performance. Notes fly toward the player in time with the song, and the player strikes them back with the penlights held in both hands.[1] The Meta Horizon Store listing describes multiple difficulty levels and note speeds, a VIEW mode that shows the performance at close range once the player reaches certain combo milestones, and a MOVIE mode for watching 360-degree and 180-degree videos. The videos for "melty world" and "Hello, Morning" are low-resolution versions of clips that are free on Kizuna AI's official YouTube channel, and others are 180-degree recordings from the Secret Sky Music Festival.[7]

The 2023 version keeps the VR rhythm game and adds two modes. In the non-VR mode the game is played with a controller and no headset, and the View Mode lets the player move freely around the stage.[5] In VR, the PlayStation 5 version uses PlayStation VR2, and the PlayStation 4 version uses PlayStation VR with PlayStation Move motion controllers.[5] The Steam version can be played on a monitor or through SteamVR, and Gemdrops lists the Oculus Rift S, Valve Index and Oculus Quest 2 among supported VR hardware.[8] Unlike the PlayStation versions, the Nintendo Switch version is not listed with VR support; its rhythm game uses touch controls, and its View Mode supports touch and gyro controls.[9][10] On the Steam Deck, the rhythm game also supports touch controls and the View Mode supports touch and gyro controls.[8]

Songs

The Quest version launched with two of Kizuna AI's original songs, "Hello, Morning" (produced by Nor) and "melty world" (produced by TeddyLoid), and more songs were planned after release.[1][4] The 2023 version contains 15 songs performed by Kizuna AI, including "Hello, Morning".[8][11] Every song is played in its full-length version, which Weekly Famitsu reviewers noted makes each play long.[10]

Development

The game was announced on 14 September 2020 as Kizuna AI's first VR rhythm game, with Kizuna AI Inc. responsible for planning and Activ8 and Gemdrops as developers.[3][12] The announcement tied the project to Kizuna AI's stated aim of connecting with people around the world.[3] Gemdrops had previously made Spice and Wolf VR.[13]

On 9 September 2022 Gemdrops announced PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 versions for early 2023. The PlayStation 5 version was planned with PlayStation VR2 support, and both versions added the non-VR mode and View Mode to the original Quest content. The game was playable at the Tokyo Game Show 2022 at the Happinet booth, where a stage event with new information about the game was also scheduled for 18 September 2022.[14] On 8 December 2022 Gemdrops relaunched the official website, released the first trailer and set release dates of 22 February 2023 for PlayStation 5 and 27 April 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Steam.[6][5] On 31 March 2023 the company moved the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Steam versions to 25 May 2023 to improve the quality of their content.[6][15]

Release

Meta's Oculus blog announced on 21 January 2021 that the game, "previously released in Japan", was available on the Quest platform, and reported a 4.7-star rating at that time.[2] As of October 2026 the Meta Horizon Store lists the Quest version as free with in-app purchases.[7] The game was part of the PlayStation VR2 launch lineup announced in January 2023, a list of 37 titles due at launch or within a month of the headset's 22 February 2023 release.[16]

Platform Release date VR support Notes
Oculus Quest 13 October 2020 Yes Free; planned by Kizuna AI Inc.[3][4]

Steam (Windows) 25 May 2023 SteamVR (optional) The Steam store lists the release date as 24 May 2023[6][8]

In Japan the digital versions cost 4,400 yen including tax.[15] The PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch physical editions cost 5,720 yen for the standard edition and 12,100 yen for a limited edition.[5][17] The limited edition includes a special box, a penlight, a scarf towel, a neck strap, a card case with a special staff card, a silicone band and a numbered concert ticket that cannot be used.[5] CERO rated the game B (ages 12 and up).[5] In the United States the game lists at US$34.99 on the PlayStation Store (PlayStation 5 version), Nintendo eShop and Steam.[18][9][8]

Downloadable content

Gemdrops released paid downloadable content after launch. On Steam, the first two costume packs, "hello, world 2020" and "A.I. Party! 2018", came out alongside the game.[19][20] The third pack, released on 30 June 2023, adds a model of "#kzn" and the song "DOGS HYNOME feat. #kzn".[6][21] MoguLive described #kzn ("Kizuna") as a singing-focused AI.[5]

Reception

The game has no Metascore; when checked in October 2026, Metacritic listed one critic review, below the four needed for a score.[22]

Publication Platform Score
Weekly Famitsu (issue 1798) PlayStation 5 29/40 (7, 8, 7, 7)[10]
Gamers Heroes PC 50%[23]

In Weekly Famitsu's cross review of the PlayStation 5 version, one reviewer wrote that watching Kizuna AI sing and dance at close range from different angles makes the VR mode satisfying, and another wrote that the VR modes on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 give the feeling of joining a live show while waving a penlight. Two reviewers found the game less appealing when played with a controller; one described the non-VR mode as a common button-timing system that plays differently from the VR mode. Reviewers also pointed to the small number of songs and costumes, the length of each play caused by the full-length songs, plain stage backgrounds and notes that sometimes overlap.[10]

Casey Scheld of Gamers Heroes reviewed the PC version without using its VR mode and gave it 50%. He contrasted its 15 songs with the hundreds of tracks in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+, found the stages lacking in personality and called the View Mode and videos too thin to encourage repeat play. He wrote that Kizuna AI herself is "modeled quite well" and that the music selection features "some nice bops".[23]
