Jade Bird Display, which does business as JBD, is a Chinese maker of MicroLED microdisplays and the small projectors built from them, which it sells mainly for smart glasses and augmented reality glasses that use waveguide optics. The company was founded in 2015 and is based in Shanghai; its Chinese operating company is 上海显耀显示科技股份有限公司.[1][2][3] A 2025 interim report from one of its investors, China Merchants China Direct Investments, names the company Jade Bird Display (Shanghai) Limited and states that it was established in Shanghai in October 2015.[3] Press releases from mid-2026 describe JBD as "the brand name of Hue Inc."[4][5]
In October 2020 JBD announced that it was moving into production of a 0.13-inch, 640x480 monochrome microLED panel with a 4 micrometre pixel pitch; the panel won the Society for Information Display's 2023 "Display of the Year" award.[6][7] Panels and projectors from the company are used in consumer glasses including the Vuzix Z100, Even Realities G1, Rokid Glasses, INMO GO2 and RayNeo X3 Pro.[8][9][10][11] JBD said that by the end of 2025 its microdisplays had been integrated into nearly 50 smart glasses models.[12]
History
Founding and first production
Qiming Li is JBD's founder and chief executive.[13][4] The company describes its in-house work as covering MOCVD material growth, microLED manufacturing, packaging, testing and drive hardware and software design.[1] For red emitters it has used AlGaInP since its founding, according to a 2023 company statement.[14]
Display analyst Karl Guttag reported that JBD announced on 12 October 2020 that it was beginning production of its 0.13-inch 640x480 single-colour microdisplays, which had 4 micrometre pixels and integrated microlenses over each pixel.[7] JBD itself dates mass production of this 4 micrometre series to 2021.[15]
Early partnerships
In January 2021 JBD signed two multi-year agreements with American companies. Kopin entered a multi-year collaboration under which JBD would supply LED wafers and hybrid bonding services for Kopin-designed silicon backplanes, to produce monolithic 2048x2048 monochrome LED microdisplays of about 1 inch diagonal.[13] Vuzix announced a multi-year agreement to co-develop and cross-supply display engines that paired JBD microLED panels with Vuzix waveguides and projector optics, with both companies free to sell the combined solutions.[16]
Waveguide maker WaveOptics announced a strategic partnership with JBD in August 2021; its "Leopard" development kit combined the 0.13-inch green panel with WaveOptics' Katana waveguide for a 27-degree field of view.[7] JBD later announced partnerships with tooz technologies (January 2022), which paired a colour JBD display engine with tooz's curved prescription waveguide, and with Dispelix (July 2022) for a family of AR glasses reference designs.[17][18]
Funding and capacity
JBD completed a Series A2 round in November 2021 and then began building its first plant.[19] In July 2022 it said part of the new factory's main building was complete, and that the plant would expand capacity beyond its existing pilot fab.[20] The company gave the plant's planned annual capacity as 120 million microLED displays.[21]
The next round, announced in August 2022, was led by Lightspeed China Partners and Eight Roads. JBD described the amount as the equivalent of tens of millions of US dollars; EqualOcean reported it as a Series A3 of hundreds of millions of yuan, with Co-win Ventures and Panel Capital also taking part.[19][22] JBD reported a Pre-B round in 2024.[9] On 31 March 2025, China Merchants China Direct Investments agreed to invest RMB 30 million for a 0.449 percent stake and paid on 26 May 2025; its interim report adds that JBD completed a further equity financing in August 2025.[3] JBD's own review of 2025 describes that August round as a Series B1 raising hundreds of millions of yuan, followed in October 2025 by a Series B2 of more than RMB 1 billion.[12]
In May 2026 JBD said it had upgraded its microdisplay production architecture from 4-inch wafers to a 12-inch reconstituted wafer platform.[23] Epitaxial wafers are diced, sorted, and placed onto a 12-inch carrier for bonding to 12-inch silicon backplanes; the company reported wafer-reconstitution yield above 98 percent on its pilot line and said it was transferring the process to volume production.[23] Its contact page lists sites in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, and in Hefei, Anhui Province.[24]
Products
JBD sells bare microdisplay panels as well as projectors; for the Roadrunner platform announced in 2025 it said it would prioritise shipments of complete polychrome projectors.[15] Its full-colour Hummingbird projectors combine three single-colour panels (red, green and blue) through an X-cube prism, a common optical engine design for microLED.[25][26][27] All figures in the table are manufacturer specifications.

The Phoenix line is JBD's attempt at a single-panel full-colour display. When it announced prototype shipments in August 2023, the company said Phoenix was meant for waveguides with fields of view above 50 degrees and that the three emitters in each pixel were stacked vertically, with a total stack under 5 µm thick.[25] At the start of 2025 JBD said the first custom Phoenix products were on track for mass production in the third quarter of that year.[9]
The Roadrunner platform, announced in October 2025, cut the pixel pitch from the 4 µm of the Hummingbird series to 2.5 µm and moved the backplane to a 22 nm silicon process, which JBD says caps backplane power at 18 mW.[15] With Roadrunner II, JBD also introduced a development kit for monocular full-colour AR glasses.[4]
Image correction
Diffractive waveguides spread brightness and colour unevenly across the image. In April 2024 JBD introduced ARTCs, a waveguide test and correction system made up of measurement equipment, correction algorithms and projector-side processing; the company claims it raises global brightness uniformity from under 40 percent to over 80 percent and lowers colour difference from above 0.1 to 0.02 ΔE.[37] Karl Guttag, who evaluated a compensation demo loaned by JBD, wrote that the method tries to correct both microLED variation and colour variation across the waveguide, and that JBD's correction was "based on binocular fusion", averaging the left and right eye views.[8] In May 2025 JBD also said it had cut the number of defective pixels allowed per panel from up to 100 to no more than three.[38]
XR work
JBD markets its displays mainly for AR and AI smart glasses.[1] Karl Guttag listed the TCL RayNeo X2, Vuzix Z100, LAWK Meta Lens, MyVu, INMO Go, Oppo and Even Realities G1 among the glasses using JBD microLEDs in November 2024.[8] JBD's own year-end summary for 2024 named DreamSmart's StarV Air2, Rokid Glasses, INMO GO2, Vuzix Z100 and OPPO Air Glass 3, and said more than 30 announced smart glasses used its displays.[9] For 2025 it added Alibaba's Quark AI Glasses, INMO GO3, LLVision Leion Hey2 and Xuanjing M5.[12]
The RayNeo X3 Pro, unveiled in May 2025, pairs binocular full-colour microLED displays with an etched waveguide, and JBD's ARTCs correction equipment was installed on RayNeo's production line.[11][39] In September 2025 JBD, RayNeo and Applied Materials described the result as a three-way collaboration that replaced multilayer nanoimprinted waveguides with a single-layer etched waveguide plus system-level image correction.[40]
Analysts have linked JBD to Meta's Orion prototype glasses, shown in September 2024. Market research firm TrendForce wrote that Orion combined a silicon carbide waveguide with "JBD's three-panel full-color LEDoS technology" for a 70-degree field of view.[41] Guttag concluded that JBD was "most likely" making Orion's microLEDs, noting that Meta said it had "designed" them in the way Apple designed the Sony-made micro-OLEDs in its headset, and that there were "no other likely suspects".[8]
Outside glasses, JBD has worked since 2024 with XPANCEO on a microLED display for smart contact lenses. In July 2026 the two companies announced a second phase to co-develop a low-power microLED microdisplay architecture for a display expected to measure fractions of a millimetre in diameter.[42][5] The company has also applied its panels to non-XR products: a microLED printhead module launched in February 2025 and the Griffin automotive projection platform in 2026.[3][35]
