DPVR P2 is a virtual reality head-mounted display released in 2023. It is a standalone headset with 3DoF rotational tracking, made by the Shanghai company DPVR for business and institutional customers such as schools, training providers, VR arcades and medical users.[1][2] DPVR lists it among its enterprise standalone 3DoF headsets, alongside the P1 series.[2]

The P2 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 processor with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. DPVR gives a combined display resolution of 3664 x 1920 pixels, a 100° field of view and a 90 Hz refresh rate.[3] Its main selling points in DPVR's launch material were the "Marathon Kit" of power accessories, which includes a replaceable 5700 mAh battery, and file encryption that limits access to authorized DPVR devices.[1][4]

History

In July 2023 DPVR said it would soon launch the P2, the newest model in its P series of standalone headsets, on the European market. The Chinese trade site PjTime reported that the product was aimed at problems faced by enterprise customers in VR education, medicine, training and amusement.[5] On 9 August 2023 Auganix reported a partnership between DPVR and the device management company ManageXR, under which ManageXR software would come pre-installed on DPVR's P1 series and on the upcoming P2.[6] DPVR also published a teaser, datelined 10 August 2023, which described two features from its social media posts, the Marathon Kit and file encryption, and said full specifications had not yet been released.[7]

DPVR launched the P2 on the European market on 12 September 2023.[8][9] Its English press release, published on its website the same day, carries a Shanghai dateline of 5 September 2023.[1] In the release, DPVR vice president Derek Liu said: "DPVR P2 embodies our relentless pursuit of advancing the educational landscape through technological innovation."[1][4] DPVR listed the P2, together with the P1 Pro, E4 and other headsets, among the models it would exhibit at CES 2024.[10]

The XR community site XR ERA gave its price as US$398 shortly after launch,[11] and DPVR's online store listed it at US$398 in December 2024.[12] As of September 2026 the same store page lists it at US$498, and the company asks buyers of larger quantities to contact its sales team.[2]

Earlier use of the P2 name

DPVR had used the P2 name before. In January 2019 Chinese VR news sites reported that DPVR had presented a 3DoF standalone headset called P2, also built on the Snapdragon XR1, with a 2.5K BOE fast-switching LCD, a 100° field of view and a weight of 340 g. It was offered in China in three versions priced at 1,999, 2,599 and 3,299 yuan.[13][14] DPVR's own company timeline lists its January 2019 XR1 headset as the P1 Pro.[15] The headset covered in this article is the enterprise model launched in 2023.

Design and hardware

Processor, memory and storage

The P2 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 chipset with an Adreno 615 GPU, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.[3] A microSD card slot accepts cards of up to 1 TB. DPVR placed the slot behind the face liner so that the card cannot be knocked out by accident.[2]

Display and optics

DPVR's parameter table gives a resolution of 3664 x 1920, which is 1832 x 1920 per eye, a 100° field of view and a 90 Hz refresh rate.[3] The interpupillary distance adjustment is mechanical, with three fixed positions at 58 mm, 64 mm and 70 mm.[2][1]

Battery and the Marathon Kit

DPVR said that customers had often raised concerns about battery life, and that some had modified headsets with third-party parts to keep them running longer.[1] Its answer was the Marathon Kit, a set of power options: a replaceable 5700 mAh battery, a charging dock for spare batteries, and a DC power supply accessory for running the headset on direct power.[2][4] DPVR's parameter table lists the direct power supply with a 4 m cable.[3] The company rates the battery for 3-4 hours of continuous use.[2] In its teaser, DPVR pointed to unattended VR arcades, which could run for longer without stopping to recharge, and to schools and museums.[7]

Fit and comfort

DPVR describes a front-to-back weight balance intended to spread the headset's weight, and a strap that fits both adults and children.[1] The head strap adjusts from 49 to 61 cm, and the face liner and cushions can be replaced, with leather and fabric surfaces available.[2] DPVR's parameter table lists an enlarged back section of the head strap measuring 156 x 92 mm and a weight of 690 g including the face liner.[3]

Audio

The P2 has dual stereo speakers and dual microphones, one at the top and one at the bottom of the headset.[3] DPVR's launch release says the speakers give a 50% boost in bass performance, and its product page describes them as improved by 50% over the previous generation.[1][2] An optional pair of Bluetooth TWS earbuds has active noise cancellation, which DPVR says reduces up to 80% of ambient noise.[1][3]

Controls

The P2 can be operated with a handheld controller or with a touchpad. DPVR says the touchpad lets older users select options without learning to use a controller.[2][3] The headset connects over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0.[3]

Software and management

Data encryption

The P2 can encrypt files so that they can be opened only on authorized DPVR devices. DPVR presented this as protection for corporate data and for course material used by schools and other institutions.[1] Its parameter table describes the feature as player encryption and SD card encryption.[3] The teaser said DPVR was working with educational content providers and medical institutions on the feature.[7]

Customization

As with the P1 series, which DPVR calls the P2's predecessor, customers can order the P2 with their own logo, packaging and color, with a minimum order of 100 units. On the software side, DPVR offers customization of the Launcher, Unity, Framework and SDK.[1]

Group training and device management

DPVR's P2 product page presents two classroom systems. Its Group Training System runs from a computer or tablet and connects up to 60 headsets at once; the teacher chooses course material on the computer and broadcasts it to the students' headsets. StarLink uses a wireless LAN to mirror PC VR content to up to 50 standalone headsets, and DPVR claims it cuts costs by 50-70% compared with a traditional "one to many" setup.[2]

Third-party device management platforms also support the P2. ManageXR lists it with the P1, P1 Pro, P1 Pro 4K and P1 Pro Ultra 4K among its supported DPVR devices.[16] ArborXR lists the P2 among the DPVR standalone headsets it can manage remotely.[17]

P2 Vision

In December 2024 the Taipei eye-tracking company Ganzin Technology announced that DPVR would present a new standalone headset, the P2 Vision, at CES 2025. The P2 Vision uses Ganzin's AURORA IIS eye tracking solution, and Ganzin said it would be available to order from CES 2025.[18] Auganix reported in February 2025 that DPVR gave the eye tracking an accuracy error of less than 1.5°, and that the headset had been shown to the public for the first time at CES 2025.[19] DPVR's store page lists the P2 Vision at US$949 with an adjustable IPD range of 54-72 mm, describes its battery as suited to use in clinics and at home, and names manufacturing and professional training, research and marketing analysis, and medical research as applications.[20]

Reception

In her September 2023 article for XR ERA, Pippa Brownlie noted that the P2 was priced at US$398 and aimed at "educators, EdTech providers, and forward-thinking enterprises" rather than at gaming. She wrote that its three-level IPD adjustment differed little from that of the HP Reverb G2 and HTC Vive Pro 2, and that its balanced design resembled the Meta Quest Pro. She found the hardware and software customization went further than what large Western competitors offered. On audio, she argued that the noise cancellation could help a student concentrate on a seated task but could make a less supervised task that involves moving around more dangerous, because the wearer hears less of the surroundings. She also wrote that DPVR's data protection claims would only matter in the European Union if the headset was approved as GDPR compliant, and that it was not yet clear whether it would be.[11]
