DPVR P1 Ultra 4K is a virtual reality head-mounted display released in 2021. It is a standalone headset with three degrees of freedom (3DoF) tracking, made by the Shanghai-based headset company DPVR and aimed at business customers in fields such as education, training and medical care.[2][1][4]
DPVR's international announcement, dated 26 August 2021, presented it together with the lower-priced DPVR P1 Pro Light. The P1 Ultra 4K uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and a single 3840 x 2160 LCD panel behind Fresnel lenses, with a 100-degree field of view. The basic version was announced at US$599.[1][2] Its main selling point was a modular design: DPVR offered optional add-on modules for hand tracking, eye tracking, heart rate measurement, iris recognition and a brain-computer interface.[1][3]
Announcement and release
DPVR announced the P1 Ultra 4K and P1 Pro Light internationally on 26 August 2021 as enterprise models in its P1 line of wireless headsets. The company priced the P1 Ultra 4K at US$599 and the P1 Pro Light, which uses a Snapdragon 821 processor, at US$399.[1] Auganix reported that these were the prices of the basic versions and that both headsets were due to become available in September 2021.[2] DPVR's Chinese announcement gave a domestic price of 3,899 yuan for the basic version and said the headset was expected to go on sale in September.[3] Chinese trade press had already described the P1 Ultra 4K as DPVR's new headset in an interview published on 12 August 2021.[5]
The original DPVR P1 had launched with a VR9 chip and a 2560 x 1440 Fast-LCD panel running at 72 Hz.[5] DPVR's store describes the P1 line as a range running from the P1 HD with a VR9 processor, through the P1 Pro HD and 4K with an XR1 processor, to the P1 Ultra 4K with the Snapdragon 845.[6] DPVR said the P1 Ultra 4K had twice the performance of the previous model;[1] its Chinese announcement specified that the Snapdragon 845's CPU performance was twice that of the XR1 chip used in the DPVR P1 Pro 4K.[3]
In an interview published by the Chinese trade publication VR陀螺 (VR Gyro) in August 2021, DPVR's vice president of sales and marketing, identified as Derek, said business customers did not need the most advanced chip, such as the XR2, and that the Snapdragon 845 met the needs of education, training and medical customers at a good price. The article put the 845's performance gain over the Snapdragon 835 at 30-35%. Derek added that business projects were still mostly 3DoF, with comparatively few 6DoF projects. According to Derek, the add-on modules covered six or seven fixed industry scenarios, such as a US ophthalmology customer that needed to measure patients' pupil and eye-movement data, and the modules had already reached mass production.[5]
In its announcement, DPVR also cited a Counterpoint survey for the first quarter of 2021 that placed its headset shipments in the top three worldwide.[1]
Design and hardware
Processor and memory
The headset uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845, which DPVR lists with a Kryo 385 CPU at up to 2.8 GHz and an Adreno 630 GPU at 710 MHz.[4] DPVR's store describes the P1 Ultra 4K as its most powerful headset, "35% faster than 835 series devices".[6] The Chinese launch announcement listed two memory configurations, 4 GB RAM with 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM with 128 GB storage, and support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.[3] DPVR's current specification table lists 4 GB RAM with 128 GB storage,[4] while its store pages list 4 GB RAM with 64 GB storage.[6]
Display and optics
The P1 Ultra 4K has a single 5.5-inch Fast LCD panel with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 and a pixel density of 807 PPI, split between the two eyes.[4] Teardowns by VR Gyro and 93913 identified the panel as a BOE part.[7][8] DPVR's Chinese announcement described the screen as an anti-motion-sickness fast-switching panel with an RGB full-pixel arrangement and said the headset supports 8K decoding.[3] The lenses are Fresnel lenses with a 100-degree field of view. DPVR lists an interpupillary distance range of 53-73 mm and an angular resolution of 22 pixels per degree.[4] The display has TUV Rheinland low blue light certification.[4]
Published figures for the refresh rate do not agree. DPVR's own specification table gives 72 Hz,[4] the product page for the 4G/5G model gives 90 Hz,[9] and the teardowns by VR Gyro and 93913 both reported 75 Hz.[7][8]
Body, cooling and battery
DPVR gave the weight as 450 grams in its launch announcement.[1] Its specification table lists 340 g without the face cushion and dimensions of 181 x 113 x 94 mm.[4] Compared with earlier P1 models, DPVR added what it called an improved ergonomic triangle head strap, a more comfortable face cushion and a built-in smart fan.[1] The front panel is anodized aluminum alloy, and business customers can order it in custom colors with a laser-engraved logo.[4]
VR Gyro's teardown found a pleated aluminum alloy heat sink and a 0.5 W cooling fan above the main board. It also found a proximity sensor between the lenses that detects whether the headset is being worn, so the screen can switch off when it is not.[7] The battery is a 4000 mAh lithium cell. DPVR's announcement gives up to 4 hours between charges,[1] while its specification table gives 5 hours.[4] In 93913's charge and discharge test, the headset ran for more than 4 hours.[8]
Connectivity and input
The headset has dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac), Bluetooth 5.0, a USB Type-C port, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, stereo speakers and a built-in microphone. Its sensors include a gyroscope, an accelerometer and a proximity sensor. It is controlled with a touchpad on the headset and a 3DoF Bluetooth controller.[4] VR Gyro also noted an expansion card slot on the main board,[7] and DPVR's P1 range page lists a memory card slot and the option of direct power instead of the battery.[10]

Software and features
DPVR lists the operating system as DPUI 4.0 and the game platform as VIVEPORT; the headset also supports screen casting.[4] In its December 2021 teardown, 93913 described the system as a heavily customized version of Android 8.1 and said it uses asynchronous timewarp.[8] Business customers can have the boot logo, boot screen and launcher changed, set an app to start at boot or run as a system service, and have applications preinstalled.[4]
Optional modules
DPVR designed the P1 Ultra 4K around optional hardware modules that are fitted to order. VR Gyro's teardown found several spare connectors on the main board reserved for these modules.[7] DPVR described the following options at launch:[1][3]

Classroom systems
DPVR's Starlink system streams a presenter's PC VR content over a wireless local network to as many as 50 standalone headsets. A central playback control system lets a teacher manage content in a VR classroom.[4] VR Gyro reported in January 2022 that the P1 Ultra 4K had been deployed with these systems at schools and companies in China for K-12, vocational and safety education, among other uses.[7]
Versions
DPVR also sells a P1 Ultra 4K 4G/5G model with an integrated plug-and-play cellular module for remote or mobile use.[9] As of September 2026, DPVR's online store listed the standard headset as the "P1 PRO-4K(ULTRA)" at US$649, and the 5G model at US$1,099.[6][9]
Reception
The headset was reviewed mainly by Chinese XR trade publications. After taking it apart, VR Gyro found the internal construction orderly and tightly packed, with solid materials.[7] 93913 also found the build quality good and said the cooling system kept the processor from overheating. It noted that at about 450 g the headset is somewhat heavy compared with consumer headsets, which were getting lighter. The reviewer regretted that a 3DoF headset with a Snapdragon 845 could not compete with 6DoF standalone headsets in the consumer market, but called it a cost-effective option for business use.[8]
