Breachers is a team-based tactical first-person shooter for virtual reality headsets, developed and published by the Belgian studio Triangle Factory. Two teams of five, the attacking Enforcers and the defending Revolters, fight over a bomb in close-quarters maps, with an economy that lets players buy weapons and gadgets between rounds. The studio describes it as a mix of Counter-Strike and Rainbow Six Siege built for VR.[1][2]

The game launched on April 13, 2023 for Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, PICO 4 and PC VR headsets through SteamVR, at a price of US $29.99, with cross-platform play between all versions from day one.[3][4] A PlayStation VR2 version followed on December 20, 2023.[5] Triangle Factory has kept the game in active development since launch, adding new maps, gadgets, a ranked competitive mode with quarterly seasons, cross-platform account linking and custom game settings; the most recent update at the time of writing, version 39.0, was released on September 10, 2026.[6]

Breachers was a runner-up for Best AR/VR Game and Best Multiplayer Game at the 2023 Unity Awards, and won Best Multiplayer at the Belgian Game Awards in October 2024.[7][8] A cooperative zombie spin-off, Breachers: Outbreak, was announced in June 2026 and put on hold by the studio in September 2026.[9]

Gameplay

Breachers is played in first person with tracked motion controllers. Matches pit five Enforcers against five Revolters. In the main Bomb Defusal mode the Revolters guard a planted bomb while the Enforcers try to reach it and disarm it with an EMP, or eliminate the defending squad.[4] Players earn credits during a match and spend them on weapons, attachments and gadgets at the start of each round, a buy-phase economy modelled on Counter-Strike.[10][2]

The two sides carry different equipment. Enforcers have access to reconnaissance drones, cloaking devices, flashbangs and explosive breaching foam that opens walls and doors, while Revolters fortify the site with door blockers, trip mines, static field emitters and proximity sensors.[4][10] Grenades and healing syringes can be bought by either side.[10] Later updates expanded the kit: a Clone Projector gadget arrived in March 2025, Revolters received C4 charges that blow open hatches and walls in August 2025, Enforcers gained a Spring Mine in November 2025, and a burst-fire rifle called the Vantos was added in July 2026.[6]

Movement is built around verticality. Enforcers can rappel up the outside of buildings, vault through windows and breach walls to open new approaches, and either team can climb, swing and drop between floors.[1][4] In UploadVR's description of the launch build, a grappling hook is fired by pointing upward and pressing the trigger, after which the analog stick moves the player up the rope; descent starts automatically when the player walks off an edge.[10] Locomotion is artificial, with smooth or snap turning, optional auto-sprint and no teleport option; the review noted that seated play was not officially supported at launch, though the PlayStation and Pico store pages now list both standing and sitting play.[10][11][12] Team coordination uses voice chat and a ping system; the PlayStation version also lists a practice mode and controller remapping.[11]

Modes

At launch the game shipped with Bomb Defusal and Team Deathmatch, casual matchmaking, private servers and a practice range.[3][10] Control Point, added in July 2023, gives both teams identical weapons and gadgets and scores points for holding designated rooms.[13] A ranked Competitive mode launched in April 2024 (see below), and a Defuse Race mode, in which teams race to secure the EMP and defuse, was added in March 2026.[6] Custom lobbies gained expanded settings in August 2026: the lobby leader can choose the map, restrict weapons, and change movement speed, proximity chat, round times and dual wielding, and can save the result as a preset.[14]

Triangle Factory's maps page lists the following maps and release dates. All are set in the fiction of the ESTF (Enyo Special Task Force), the organisation the Enforcers belong to.[15][14]

Competitive mode and seasons

The free Competitive Update, version 19.3.2, went live on April 9, 2024 and opened Season Zero, a first ranked season that Triangle Factory said it would still tune while it ran.[6][18] Players complete five placement matches to receive a starting rank, then move through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond (each split into three tiers), followed by Master, Grand Master and Global Champion.[19][20] Ranked matches cannot end in a tie: after an initial tie the highest-scoring team picks a side for one more round, and if the scores are still level, sides are assigned at random for a single sudden-death round that decides the match.[18] Each rank unlocks a weapon skin and in-game credits, seasonal rewards depend on rank and matches played, and quitting early or disconnecting for more than ten minutes costs skill points.[19][20] Seasons last three months, giving four per year.[20] Season 9 began on July 23, 2026.[6]

Development

Triangle Factory is an independent studio in Ghent, Belgium, whose earlier VR title was the multiplayer shooter Hyper Dash.[21][3] Founder and CEO Timothy Vanherberghen described Breachers to Shacknews in 2023 as "if Counter-Strike and [Rainbow Six] Siege made a baby in virtual reality", and discussed designing it to minimise the discomforts players experience in VR.[2] Creative director Jeroen Dessaux told the Meta Quest Blog that community feedback drove the design: "We strongly believe in getting community feedback. We'll continue to do that with Breachers."[22]

The game was tested publicly before release. A free alpha with a single map, Factory, was distributed from November 2022 as an APK for Quest 2 and Quest Pro through SideQuest rather than the official store; Triangle Factory said the original Quest lacked the power to run it.[23][15] When the release date was announced on March 17, 2023, the studio said more than 60,000 people had played the open alpha, which closed on March 24; by launch day it put the figure at over 77,000.[4][3]

Breachers is built in the Unity engine and uses Unity's multiplayer services, including Netcode, Multiplay hosting on a mix of bare-metal and cloud servers, and Vivox voice chat, along with its authentication, friends, lobby, matchmaking and leaderboard services. Unity's case study on the project states that the game reached 110,000 monthly active users in its first month and targets a minimum of 72 frames per second, with 90 preferred. Vanherberghen said in the same case study that "cross-platform play was the number-one priority so we could ensure an active user base across different VR systems."[21] Post-launch moderation added the ToxMod voice moderation system in August 2023, and a second anti-cheat layer, Tomahawk, was deployed in August 2026.[16][6]

The PlayStation VR2 port was announced in October 2023 for a November release, then held up in Sony's quality assurance process; Triangle Factory confirmed the December 20 date shortly before launch.[27][26][5] A November 2023 update added graphics optimisations for Meta Quest 3 and PC VR, including improved shadows, grass, dust and lighting effects.[6] As of September 2026 the game is listed at US $19.99 on the Meta Quest, Steam and PlayStation stores; the PlayStation listing carries an ESRB Teen rating and supports up to ten online players.[28][25][11] Account linking, added in January 2026, lets a player connect Meta, Steam, Pico and PlayStation accounts to share progression and inventory across platforms.[6][1]

Reception

Reviews at launch were positive. UploadVR's Henry Stockdale gave the Quest 2 version a "Recommended" verdict, calling it "a fine effort that delivers on its promise, offering a thrilling tactical VR shooter with satisfying gunplay", with praise for the polish, verticality and weapon handling and criticism of the missing ranked mode and the inability to squad up with friends at launch (both later added).[10] In UploadVR's Best of VR 2023 awards the game was named as a strong contender for Best New Multiplayer VR Game, which went to Dungeons of Eternity; the write-up credited its steady flow of new content including the party system, new maps and Control Point.[30]

The PlayStation VR2 version drew the aggregated critic scores. Metacritic records a Push Square score of 80 out of 100 (January 2, 2024) with the summary "With engaging tactics, deep customisation, and addictive team-based gameplay, Breachers is one of the best shooters yet available for PSVR2", but too few reviews for a Metascore; its user score is 7.0 from five ratings.[31] OpenCritic lists two reviews: Push Square's 8/10 by Noah McFerran and a 5/5 Platinum Award from Thumb Culture.[32] Thumb Culture's Tom McMylor called it "the current pinnacle of the genre" among VR tactical shooters, while noting that the PSVR2 graphics were only a modest step up from the Quest version and that casual play lacked skill-based matchmaking.[33]

Store ratings as of September 2026: 4.5 stars from about 6,900 reviews on the Meta Quest store, 4.2 stars from 92 reviews on the Meta PC VR store, about 1,370 Steam recommendations, and 93 percent positive from 363 reviews on the PICO Store.[28][24][25][12] In October 2023, MIXED reported the Quest listing at close to five stars with more than 2,500 reviews and the Steam listing at "very positive" with 856 reviews.[27] Unity's case study cites competitive leagues with more than 200 teams.[21]

At the 2023 Unity Awards, Breachers was a runner-up in Best AR/VR Game (won by Among Us VR) and in Best Multiplayer Game (won by Marvel Snap).[7] At the Belgian Game Awards in October 2024 it won Best Multiplayer; the jury wrote: "If Counterstrike and Rainbow 6 would have a love-child in VR, Breachers would be it!"[8][34] The awards site also lists a second-place (silver) finish in the 2024 XR Game of the Year category, won by Gazzlers, and nominations for the Audience Award, Belgian Game of the Year and Best Visual Design.[34][35]

Breachers: Outbreak

On June 23, 2026, during the VR Games Showcase, Triangle Factory announced Breachers: Outbreak, a four-player online co-op zombie extraction shooter set in the Breachers universe. It was planned for Quest, Pico and SteamVR headsets plus flatscreen PC, with full cross-play between VR and non-VR players, making it the studio's first flatscreen title; its core mode, Bone Marrow Extraction, sends a unit called The Cleaners into infected zones to find a mutated carrier known as Patient X, across randomised maps with perk builds and weapon modifications. The studio said it was "coming sometime this year".[36][37]

Less than three months later, in a statement reported on September 10, 2026, the studio put the project on hold: "The truth is that it's a hard time to build and ship a high-quality VR game like this, and the interest we've seen so far doesn't support a project of this scale." It added that "some of what we built for Outbreak will find its way into the main Breachers game itself."[9] The decision followed the studio's July 2026 announcement that Hyper Dash's servers would shut down on November 1, 2026 because the game no longer covered its running costs; its 32-player shooter Forefront reached its 1.0 release earlier in 2026.[38][39] Breachers itself continues to receive updates.[6]
