Blade & Sorcery (listed on Steam as Blade and Sorcery) is a medieval fantasy virtual reality action game built around a physics-driven melee, ranged and magic combat system. It is developed and published by WarpFrog (which now styles its name Warpfrog), a French company registered in Saint-Herblain, and is built with the Unity engine.[1][2][3] Players fight humanoid enemies in arenas and dungeons with weapons whose weight and momentum are simulated, alongside abilities such as telekinesis, slowing time and elemental magic.[4][5]

The PC VR version entered Steam Early Access on December 11, 2018, and reached its 1.0 full release on June 17, 2024.[1][5] A separate standalone version for Meta Quest 2, Blade & Sorcery: Nomad, launched on November 4, 2021, later came to Pico headsets, and received its own 1.0 update on October 28, 2024.[6][7] Since 1.0, WarpFrog has released free "Byeth Updates" for both versions; three of the four planned updates had shipped by July 2026.[8] Road to VR has called it "arguably VR's top physics-based combat sandbox", and the Nomad edition became one of the most-reviewed paid games on the Quest store.[5][9]

Gameplay

Blade & Sorcery is a first-person combat game played with tracked motion controllers. Rather than scripting attacks, the game simulates the physics of every weapon: objects have weight, creatures have full-body physics, collisions are decided by fine hitboxes, and blades can penetrate soft materials or deflect magic.[4] There is no block or parry button; players deflect enemy strikes with their own weapons.[6] Players can stab, slash, smash, grip, punch, choke, kick, climb and use zip lines, and can grip a weapon anywhere along its length, including the blade.[10][11]

Combat mixes melee weapons, ranged weapons such as bows and thrown objects, and magic.[4] The spells include telekinesis, slowing time, lightning, fire and gravity, and a selected spell can be used to imbue a held weapon with its element.[4][12] Other mechanics include physics-based climbing, dismemberment, disarming enemies and, since 2023, physics-based swimming.[4][13][14] The PC version supports the LIV capture software and full-body tracking with up to three trackers.[4][11]

Game modes

Sandbox mode gives the player all weapons, items and spells from the start across a set of arena maps, with adjustable enemy waves and a survival option.[6][15] The Dungeons mode, added in Update 10 in October 2021, generates dungeons semi-procedurally from a pool of rooms with patrolling enemies.[16]

Crystal Hunt, the progression mode added in the 1.0 release, uses a character separate from the sandbox one. The player starts as a basic warrior or mage, visits Outposts held by four factions to gather intel on the locations of ancient Dalgarian ruins, sells loot for gold to buy weapons and armor from a physical shop, and spends Crystal Shards on skill-tree skills.[5][17] WarpFrog promised more than seven hours of content and a definitive ending.[5] The story is told through lore documents and the environment rather than cutscenes, and the character creator lets players change damage modifiers, choose whether the Dalgarian language is translated automatically, and turn on death penalties up to permadeath.[18][17]

Modding

The game has supported mods since Early Access. The launch build already allowed changes to game data such as stats, AI and wave logic.[19] Update 6 in June 2019 added native plugin and custom asset support with the first version of the official SDK, and Nexus Mods added the game to its Vortex mod manager.[11][20] Update 12 in March 2023 added an in-game mod manager that installs mods hosted on mod.io from inside the headset, for both the PC version and Nomad; each version only lists mods made for it.[14] Mods usually need to be updated for each major version of the game.[14] Nomad received mod support in November 2021, initially for simpler mods such as new weapons rather than scripted ones.[21] The Rakta Update of October 2025 added Scripting 2.0, which allows advanced PC VR mods to be ported to Nomad.[22]

Development

Blade & Sorcery was created by a developer known online as KospY, whom WarpFrog's press material identifies as its founder and CEO, Damien.[23] In a 2019 interview with UploadVR, KospY said he had no prior game development or industry experience; he came from modding, and his work on Kerbal Space Program mods had taught him Unity and programming. He had followed VR since the Oculus Rift DK2 and started the Unity project as a hobby about three years before the interview, working a day job until he could develop the game full time.[3]

The project began as "Sorcering", a wave-survival game in which the player fought undead with spells and teleportation movement. KospY then moved to free locomotion and player-versus-player multiplayer, adding physics-driven melee weapons and archery, before dropping multiplayer because latency made parrying difficult and the potential player base was small. He then rewrote the code from scratch.[3] The early visual assets were picked mainly because they were available and close to his vision; he cited Skyrim and Dark Messiah as visual influences.[3] In 2019 the studio was a one-man outfit with a community manager and spokesperson known as The Baron.[24][3]

Before the Early Access launch, Road to VR reported that Early Access could last from six months to two years depending on the game's success.[19] It lasted five and a half years. WarpFrog released numbered major updates during that period (see the table below), and in October 2023 it gave the first quarter of 2024 as its "currently estimated ballpark for release" of 1.0.[25] The 1.0 build shipped on June 17, 2024.[17] By then the studio had grown from KospY alone to more than 20 full-time developers, and the 1.0 update rebuilt from scratch the Ruins map, which dated from the period when the game still used some store-bought assets.[17][23] WarpFrog called 1.0 its "final major content update" apart from patches and quality-of-life work.[5]

Nomad is a separate "made for Quest" sister title rather than a port merged into the PC game. WarpFrog said this doubled its workload, but kept PC VR development from being limited by Quest 2 hardware.[26] In July 2024 UploadVR reported The Baron as saying that a separate Quest 3 version was unlikely because "it would be madness because then there would be three versions of Blade and Sorcery to upkeep."[27]

Byeth Updates and next game

In July 2025 WarpFrog announced that it had started work on its next game, a physics-based, "super modder-friendly" VR title built on a new Thunder Road 2 framework, and stated that it is not Blade & Sorcery 2.[28][29] The studio said the original Thunder Road framework was the largest obstacle to major expansions for Blade & Sorcery.[28] At the same time it announced the Byeth Updates (Byeth is the planet on which the game is set): four free updates for PC VR and Nomad that bring official weapons and armor from the world's other nations, Rakta, Sentara, Khar-Tib and Madlu, into the game, with the series scheduled to run to the end of 2026.[28] WarpFrog first said the updates would not add maps, but from the Sentara Update each one included a faction map.[30] A planned move of the game to Unity 6 and OpenXR was postponed at the Rakta release because of the testing it required.[31]

Release

Blade & Sorcery launched in Early Access on Steam for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality headsets at US$19.99, and arrived on the Oculus Store for Rift on April 4, 2019.[19][37][24] It is also sold on Viveport.[10]

Nomad launched exclusively on Quest 2 on November 4, 2021, at US$19.99. WarpFrog said it contained "almost all of the features and content of the PCVR game version U10 Dungeons Update" and did not release it for the original Quest because supporting that headset would limit the game.[38][6] Nomad was among the titles available at the launch of the PICO 4 on October 18, 2022.[39] The PICO Store listing names PICO Neo3 Pro, Neo3 Link, Neo3 Eye, PICO 4, PICO 4 Pro, PICO 4 Ultra and PICO Space Pro as supported devices and showed version 1.3.1, updated July 30, 2026.[40]

At the 1.0 release the PC price rose from US$19.99 to US$29.99, with existing owners receiving the update free.[26] Nomad reached 1.0 on October 28, 2024, bringing Crystal Hunt, skill trees, the Golem boss and the previously PC-only Citadel map to standalone headsets; its price also rose to US$29.99.[7][41] According to WarpFrog, Nomad 1.0 had more than 78 skills, 76 weapons and 90 armor pieces forming 10 sets.[41] The Byeth Updates have been released for Nomad on Quest and Pico as well as for PC VR.[22][42][43]

Reception

Reviewing the Early Access build in December 2018, Scott Hayden of Road to VR gave no score but wrote that the game "strongly demonstrates that physics-based melee can work in the right conditions"; he criticized the lack of progression and the limited comfort options and said the arena format made it "feel more like a tech demo than a game".[44] After Update 5 added decapitation, Jamie Feltham of UploadVR wrote: "If there was any doubt as to if Blade and Sorcery was VR's bloodiest game yet it's surely done away with this update."[37]

Road to VR scored Nomad 7 out of 10 at launch (Gameplay 7, Immersion 6.5, Comfort 8), calling it "one of the best physics-based combat sandboxes out there" while noting the missing story and progression, scripted-feeling enemies and lower visual quality than the PC version.[45] UploadVR scored the PC 1.0 release 4 out of 5, praising its "brutal yet satisfying physics-driven combat" while criticizing jank such as arms catching while climbing, hands failing to register on ledges, texture and sky pop-in, and performance problems at the highest settings, which the reviewer encountered on a PC with an RTX 4070 Ti Super while playing on both a Rift S and a Quest 3 via Virtual Desktop.[18] In its Nomad 1.0 impressions, UploadVR called the standalone version an "impressive feat" that is "mostly on par" with PC VR, with lower enemy counts and blurry distant enemies.[46] MIXED found that Nomad 1.0 ran at a low rendering resolution on Quest 3, with visible blur and aliasing.[47]

Source Version Score or rating
Road to VR Nomad (2021) 7/10[45]
UploadVR PC VR 1.0 (2024) 4/5[18]
Steam user reviews PC VR Overwhelmingly Positive, 96% of 49,458 English-language reviews (October 2026)[1]
Meta Horizon Store user rating Nomad 4.3 of 5, about 63,000 ratings (October 2026)[48]
Meta Horizon Store user rating PC VR (Rift listing) 4.5 of 5, about 4,100 ratings (October 2026)[15]
PICO Store user rating Nomad 90% positive, 1,330 reviews (October 2026)[40]

As of October 2026 Metacritic lists no Metascore for the PC version because it has fewer than four critic reviews.[49] The game was one of five nominees for VR Game of the Year at the 2024 Steam Awards, alongside Maestro, Davigo, Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted 2 and Metro Awakening, which won the award.[50][51]

Sales

Using review counts as a guide, Road to VR estimated in June 2022 that Nomad had sold about 830,000 units on Quest, or about US$16.6 million assuming full-price sales. At that point it had passed Superhot VR to become the second most-reviewed paid Quest game, though it had less than half the reviews of Beat Saber.[9] WarpFrog's 1.0 press release in June 2024 cited more than 45,000 Steam reviews and more than 77,000 community members.[23] At the Nomad 1.0 launch in October 2024, KospY referred to "the 4 million+ Nomad players".[41]
