Bigscreen is a social virtual reality application for watching video, sharing a computer desktop and hanging out with other people in shared virtual rooms, and also the name of the company that makes it, Bigscreen, Inc. The PC version has been listed on Steam as "Bigscreen Beta" since its free launch on April 28, 2016.[1][2] The app began as a virtual desktop tool that let users host virtual LAN parties by mirroring their Windows screens to friends in VR. It later added rented 2D and 3D films from studios such as Paramount Pictures, free TV channels, built-in YouTube and a video player for local files, and it now runs on PC VR headsets and on Meta Quest headsets.[1][3]

Bigscreen, Inc. was founded in 2014 by its CEO Darshan Shankar and is headquartered in Los Angeles, California. It is backed by the venture capital firms True Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz, from which it raised a US$3 million seed round and a US$11 million Series A. The company states that its software has more than 6 million users.[4] Since 2023 Bigscreen has also made hardware: the Bigscreen Beyond and Bigscreen Beyond 2 are ultralight PC VR headsets that use SteamVR Tracking.[4][5]

History

Founding and early beta (2014-2016)

Shankar, a Y Combinator alumnus, told Road to VR that he had been working on Bigscreen since 2014 and released it as a private beta in July 2015. The same March 2016 report said that Hayden Lee, who had created the earlier social VR app Convrge, had joined as a co-founder, and that the company had closed a seed round.[6] At that stage up to four people could meet in a virtual space and see each other's desktop screens, so they could watch Netflix or YouTube together, watch someone else play, or hold a virtual LAN party.[6] Engadget described the public beta signup in March 2016, when the finished software was planned for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in April and support for the Samsung Gear VR was planned for later that year.[7]

The app went live free on Steam on April 28, 2016, with cross-play between the Rift and the Vive. At launch it had one environment, a penthouse apartment with a balcony overlooking a city skyline, and it had no shared desktop audio and no custom avatars yet. Only the person sharing a screen needed access to the content being shown.[2] Within days, The Verge reporter Paul Miller described being harassed by other users in a public room. In a statement quoted by The Verge, the developers, then a team of two, said they had not expected the community to grow so fast, promised muting, blocking and other protection features by the end of that week, and wrote: "Our goal is to build Skype, not Chatroulette."[8]

Rooms at launch held up to four people.[2] Updates over the following months added a "Personal Space Bubble" that hid people who came too close (June 2016),[9] Leap Motion hand support with high-five animations,[10] Oculus Remote control of the desktop,[11] desktop audio streaming (July 2016)[12] and custom avatars (August 2016), when the app also arrived on Oculus Home with cross-play against Steam users.[13] Later 2016 updates added a bedroom environment for watching while lying down,[14] text chat with permanent bans from public rooms for users who drew too many reports,[15] and a "Theater" update with two theater environments whose dynamic lighting responded to the screen, a campfire scene, four space environments, split-screen display when two to four people shared their desktops, and side-by-side (SBS) and over-under (OU) 3D video controls.[16]

Funding and platform expansion (2017-2019)

In February 2017 Bigscreen announced a US$3 million seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with True Ventures, Presence Capital, Ludlow Ventures, David Bettner and SV Angel taking part. Road to VR reported that Shankar pitched investors inside Bigscreen itself, that the app had about 150,000 users, and that power users spent 20 to 30 hours a week in it. Shankar said the company was not building a content or gaming company but a platform for using existing content, apps and games in VR.[17] The same month an update added support for up to three monitors, each of which could be scaled, curved and positioned independently.[18] In July 2017 the "Cinema Update" added a cinema environment with a 100-foot screen and 40 computer-controlled audience members, and a new peer-to-peer streaming engine for encrypted 1080p desktop sharing at 30 frames per second.[19]

On October 10, 2017 Bigscreen announced a US$11 million Series A led by True Ventures with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, bringing its total funding to US$14 million.[4] TechCrunch reported more than 250,000 registered users at that time; Shankar said the original inspiration had been to build virtual office systems.[20] In December 2017 the app added support for Windows Mixed Reality headsets and became available on the Microsoft Store, in addition to Steam and the Oculus Store; Road to VR reported about 340,000 users across Rift and Vive and noted that Bigscreen planned mobile and PlayStation VR versions for 2018.[21] That month Bigscreen also ran its first studio screenings, with Paramount Pictures as its first studio partner: free 3D showings of Top Gun (1986) for users in the United States from December 29 to 31, 2017.[22]

Bigscreen launched on the Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR on May 1, 2018, as an Oculus Go launch title, with cross-play against the PC version.[23] The mobile release came with a Remote Desktop feature that streamed a Windows PC to the headset at 1080p and 30 frames per second.[24] A "2019 Update" in February 2019 brought a new cinema with curved amphitheater seating, real-time screen lighting that also ran on mobile headsets, a redesigned menu and upgraded avatars.[25] Bigscreen was a launch title for the Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S on May 21, 2019, and Engadget reported that it would also be a launch title for the Valve Index.[26]

Movies, TV and streaming (2019-2022)

Bigscreen TV launched on July 13, 2019 with more than 50 free live channels drawn from ad-supported services such as YouTube, Twitch, Pluto and Comet, with viewers of each channel split into rooms of eight people.[27] In August 2019 Bigscreen carried the official presentation of Valve's Dota 2 tournament The International 2019 in VR.[28]

Bigscreen Cinema, a paid movie service, opened on December 16, 2019. Bigscreen said it had signed a multi-year agreement with Paramount Pictures to distribute 2D and 3D films in VR in 10 countries. Four films premiered each Friday at 6 p.m. Eastern with showtimes every 30 minutes, and a ticket stayed valid for showtimes within 48 hours.[29][30] Road to VR listed prices of US$4 to US$5 or the local equivalent, and launch films including Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon and Ghost in the Shell in 3D.[3] Bigscreen said its Cinema screenings streamed 1080p 3D video at 10 Mbps.[31]

In April 2020 an Events and Movies update added on-demand rentals that could be watched at any time in any environment, alongside one-off live events such as NASA and SpaceX rocket launches; movie event tickets started at US$3.99 and varied by country.[32] A partnership with Funimation brought anime films, beginning with Your Name. in May 2020.[33] A built-in video player for the user's own files followed on June 25, 2020, with synchronized group viewing when every viewer had the same file and support for side-by-side and over-under 3D.[34] In August 2020 the player gained DLNA support for Plex and other media servers; Bigscreen then described itself as "a small team of 10 people".[35] From October 2020, because of Steam policies, movie tickets could no longer be bought inside the Steam version and had to be purchased on Bigscreen's website.[36]

A December 2020 update added a drive-in theater environment, a redesigned menu, more than 60 new TV channels and 12-person lobbies, up from 8.[37] On December 5, 2020 Bigscreen hosted a virtual question-and-answer session between Shankar and Ready Player One author Ernest Cline for the release of Ready Player Two.[38] In January 2021 the app added free, ad-supported 2D movies hosted on Pluto TV, available in the United States, alongside its paid 3D rentals.[39]

The December 2021 streaming update replaced user-hosted streams with dedicated servers. Room sizes rose to 15 people on all platforms, from 4 in Quest-hosted rooms and 12 in PC-hosted rooms, and a rewritten Bigscreen Remote Desktop app streamed a PC to the Quest at 60 frames per second and up to 100 Mbps, with latency that Bigscreen said could be just under 20 ms. The update also brought spatial audio voice chat to the Quest version.[40][41] In February 2022 users became able to watch TV channels in their own private rooms; Bigscreen said it then had more than 100 channels, and the feature worked on a Quest without a PC.[42] Native YouTube integration, including YouTube Premium sign-in, arrived on April 29, 2022 on Quest and PC VR headsets.[43] In December 2022 Bigscreen added Disney+, Pluto TV, Amazon Prime Video and Twitch, with Disney+ and Prime Video requiring each viewer's own subscription and blocked from public rooms, and introduced permanent user blocking.[44]

Hardware and later updates (2023-2026)

In March 2023 Bigscreen released Avatar 2.0, a rebuilt avatar system with arms driven by inverse kinematics, necks and lower system requirements so that more avatars could be shown at once on mobile headsets.[45] Push-to-talk, previously limited to Quest, came to PC VR in July 2023.[46] An April 2024 update introduced paid premium environments (a sports bar and a gallery theater) and shareable toys such as darts, an RC car and chess in the Bigscreen Shop.[47]

In October 2024 Bigscreen launched Cloud Browser, a paid service for Quest that runs a web browser in the cloud and streams it in sync to everyone in a room, so a host can share web content without a PC. After a free two-hour trial it costs US$1.99 for a 24-hour pass or US$9.99 for a 30-day pass, and only the host pays. Services that use DRM, such as Netflix and Disney+, do not work in it, while sites such as Plex, Dropbox and Vimeo do.[48][49] In January 2025 room hosts gained controls over microphones, drawing visibility, avatar names, avatar movement and toy spawning.[50]

In July 2025 Road to VR reported on a leaked prototype of a multiplayer theater environment that Meta had been developing for Meta Horizon OS, and noted that it overlapped with some of Bigscreen's functions, although Bigscreen's defining feature remained letting users mirror their own content for others to watch.[51] As of October 2026 the app is still free on Steam and the Meta Horizon Store; the most recent Steam announcement, on April 21, 2026, was a minor bug-fix release.[1][52]

Features

The main idea behind Bigscreen is to let users livestream their monitor to friends in an online environment, so they can host a virtual LAN party or movie night. People in the virtual space can mirror their monitors to friends, or use the application alone as a virtual desktop.[2] The current Steam listing describes these main parts of the app:[1]

  • Desktop sharing: the user's PC desktop appears on large virtual monitors, with up to three virtual monitors that can be resized and reshaped. For Quest users, the Bigscreen Remote Desktop app runs on the PC and streams its desktop to the headset over the local network.[41]
  • Movies: rentals of 2D and 3D films through studio partnerships such as Paramount Pictures, plus playback of side-by-side and over-under 3D video from the desktop or the built-in video player.
  • Social rooms: public and private rooms. The Steam page still says rooms hold up to 12 people, while the Meta Horizon Store listing advertises social chat rooms "with up to 30 people".[53]
  • Environments: a movie theater, a retro-style theater, a space station, campfires and modern living rooms, among others.
  • Drawing: 3D markers for sketching in the shared space, first added in May 2017.[54]

The Meta Horizon Store listing also names YouTube with friends, free TV channels for movies, sports and comedy, and remote desktop streaming for PC games.[53] Moderation features added over time include muting and blocking, permanent blocking (2022), push-to-talk and room-host controls.[44][46][50]

Bigscreen Beyond headsets

Main article: Bigscreen Beyond

Bigscreen announced its first headset, the Bigscreen Beyond, on February 13, 2023 with pre-orders at US$999. It weighed 127 grams, used two micro-OLED displays of 2560 x 2560 pixels per eye with pancake lenses, relied on SteamVR base stations and controllers sold separately, and used a face scan taken with an iPhone to build a custom-fit facial interface. Shankar said the team built it because "VR was too heavy, bulky, and uncomfortable".[5] Shipping to customers in the United States began in September 2023. Bigscreen said it made the custom-fit parts and ran quality control in-house at its Los Angeles factory, and worked with manufacturing partners in China.[57]

Headset Announced Launch price Notes
Bigscreen Beyond February 13, 2023 US$999 127 g; shipping from September 2023; withdrawn from sale in early 2025[5][57][58]
Bigscreen Beyond 2 March 2025 US$1,019 107 g; adjustable IPD; reduced to US$959 in September 2026[58][59]
Bigscreen Beyond 2e March 2025 US$1,219 Beyond 2 with eye tracking; reduced to US$1,159 in September 2026[58][59]

UploadVR reported in March 2025 that the original Beyond had been quietly withdrawn from the market a few weeks before the Beyond 2 announcement, and that people who had recently ordered a Beyond would be offered a Beyond 2 instead.[58] The company says it has shipped more than 50,000 orders to customers in more than 50 countries since 2023, and lists accessories including the Halo Mount, an audio strap, lens inserts and custom-fit and universal-fit cushions.[4]

Reception

At launch, Engadget's Jon Fingas called Bigscreen "an important step toward turning VR from a once-in-a-blue-moon experience into something you use every day", while noting that it was then a niche product that needed both an expensive headset and a powerful PC.[7] In its May 2016 piece, The Verge called the app "a technical marvel" but used the harassment incident to argue that content moderation tends to be an afterthought on social platforms.[8] When Bigscreen arrived on Oculus Go in 2018, UploadVR described it as having "long been one of PC VR's most versatile apps".[23]

As of October 2026, the Steam version holds a "Very Positive" user review rating, and the Quest version has an average of 3.8 out of 5 stars from about 6,000 ratings on the Meta Horizon Store.[1][53] In a December 2025 list of essential Quest apps, BGR noted that some users reported bugs such as audio issues, laggy video and black screens while streaming.[60]
