Xiaomi Mijia is an augmented reality head-mounted display released in 2022. Its full product name is the Mijia Glasses Camera (Chinese: 米家眼镜相机), a camera-focused pair of smart glasses sold under Xiaomi's Mijia brand in China.[4][2] It combines a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera and an 8-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with a single Micro-OLED display on the right side of the frame, viewed through a freeform optical prism.[6][8]

The glasses were developed by SUPERHEXA (蜂巢科技), a company in Xiaomi's ecosystem of partner firms, and were announced on 1 August 2022.[1][2] Crowdfunding on Xiaomi's own stores opened on 3 August 2022 at CNY 2,499, with a retail price of CNY 2,699.[4] The device works on its own, without a cable to a phone or computer, and uses the display for real-time framing of shots and for features such as live Chinese-English translation.[6][8]

Announcement and release

The Mijia Glasses Camera was announced on 1 August 2022 as a Xiaomi ecosystem product, under the tagline "影像酷装备,见前所未见".[2] IT Home reported that crowdfunding would open at 10:00 on 3 August on the Xiaomi Mall and Xiaomi Youpin stores, at CNY 2,499 against a suggested retail price of CNY 2,699, and that early backers would receive a sunglass lens set worth CNY 299.[2] Wang Hua of Xiaomi said the glasses were a product of a Xiaomi ecosystem company.[2] According to Securities Times, which carried a Jiemian News report, that company is SUPERHEXA, founded on 15 October 2020, with Xiaomi and Tencent among its investors; its founder and CEO, Xia Yongfeng, had worked on the early development of Xiaomi's ecosystem division.[1]

Shenzhenware reported that the campaign raised CNY 1 million in its first five minutes.[9] On 16 August 2022, IT Home reported that crowdfunding had passed CNY 10 million, would end the following day, and was the highest total for any Xiaomi ecosystem product in 2022, citing official figures.[7]

The launch materials said the glasses would go on sale through Xiaomi Mall, Tmall, JD.com and Xiaomi Home stores from 16 August 2022.[6] ZOL later reported that a pre-sale across all channels ran from 1 September to 6 September 2022 at an effective price of CNY 2,599 with a coupon, and that regular sales began at 18:00 on 6 September at the original CNY 2,699.[3][10] The package included a carrying case and a standard frame for prescription lenses.[6] At launch, Road to VR wrote that Xiaomi was targeting consumers in China first and that it was uncertain whether the product would be sold elsewhere.[4]

Design and hardware

Display and optics

The glasses have one display, mounted on the right side of the frame; the camera module sits on the left.[8] The display is a 0.23-inch Sony Micro OLED silicon-based panel.[2] According to the manufacturer, it reaches a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, has a pixel density of 3,281 ppi and a contrast ratio of 10,000:1.[7] Its image passes through a freeform optical prism that the company says has 60% light efficiency, delivering a peak brightness of 1,800 nits to the eye.[6] A built-in light sensor and an automatic brightness algorithm, marketed as an "AR 阳光屏" (AR sunlight screen), adjust the display for outdoor use.[6] The display holds a TÜV Rheinland hardware low-blue-light certification.[6]

In Jiemian News's hands-on test, the display was clear and usable in strong outdoor light. The reviewer also noted that the screen can be adjusted by 15 degrees downward and 15 degrees horizontally, so users can move it to a comfortable position for their eye spacing.[8]

Cameras

The main camera is a 50-megapixel Quad Bayer wide-angle unit with an f/1.8 aperture, a five-element lens and electronic image stabilization. The second camera is an 8-megapixel periscope telephoto with an f/3.4 aperture, a five-element lens and split-type optical image stabilization.[2] The pair supports 5x optical zoom and up to 15x hybrid zoom.[11] The launch materials described it as the first time a full smartphone-style periscope dual-camera system had been built into a smart-glasses form factor.[6]

Jiemian News described the autofocus as HAF hybrid focus, combining 0.3-second phase-detection autofocus with face recognition and head tracking, and found no missed focus in quick snapshots during its test.[8] A "time backtracking" (时光回溯) feature saves the 10 seconds of video before the shutter is pressed.[6]

Computing, battery and connectivity

The glasses run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon octa-core platform with an independent image signal processor, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage.[2][5] Connectivity includes dual Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0.[4] The 1,020 mAh battery is rated for 3.3 hours of typical use or 100 minutes of continuous video recording, and magnetic 10 W charging takes it from 0 to 80% in about 30 minutes.[4][6]

Frame and controls

The glasses weigh about 100 grams.[1] The frame uses TR90 polymer memory material to fit different head sizes, and the company said components were arranged around the frame with weight balance as the first priority.[6] The nose pads are made of a soft, moldable silicone; Jiemian News found the glasses slightly heavier to wear than ordinary glasses.[8] Users with myopia or hyperopia can fit their own prescription lenses using a quick-release frame.[8] Road to VR noted that the camera and display unit can be clipped onto a pair of glasses frames or worn by itself.[4]

The glasses are controlled from the outside of the right temple: sliding adjusts zoom, sliding down switches the shooting mode, a single tap takes a photo or starts recording, and a two-finger long press opens further functions.[3]

Software and features

Besides photo and video capture, the launch software included Xiao AI translation, which the company said provides real-time English-Chinese translation displayed as text, with support for more than six languages planned for overseas markets.[6][2] A "3D usage guide" showed an animated 3D model of the glasses rising out of the retail box as an AR effect.[6] Road to VR noted that Xiaomi's marketing also mentioned "AR effects" and screencasting, while the promotional video focused little on what the heads-up display added.[4] Photos and videos are transferred to a smartphone through the Mijia Glasses app, which includes editing templates and sharing to social networks.[6]

In early September 2022, the first over-the-air update was announced, with animal and plant recognition due to go live on 10 September. The recognition feature identifies species and displays a short description. The update also added a "combat power" scanner modeled on the device from the Dragon Ball series and improved video stabilization.[3][10]

Privacy

The manufacturer listed three privacy protections: the glasses are bound to the owner's Mijia Glasses app account, so a phone not signed in to the same account cannot read their data; content is kept in internal storage rather than on a removable SD card; and photos and videos move directly between the glasses and the app without being stored in the cloud. A front-facing LED lights up during photo or video capture to alert people nearby.[1][6] Jiemian News reported that captured files are deleted from the glasses once they have been downloaded to the phone app.[8]

Reception

Road to VR described the Mijia Glasses Camera as a Google Glass-style device and wrote that "the awkward and large form factor will make it difficult for all-day wear". It also called the glasses "significantly more chunky" than a smart glasses concept Xiaomi had teased earlier in 2022, and less discreet than Meta's Ray-Ban Stories, which have no display and record 30-second clips with a 5 MP sensor.[4]

Jiemian News found that the camera focused reliably in quick snapshots and that the display remained readable in bright sunlight, but said the wide-angle electronic stabilization still had room for improvement. The reviewer concluded that the product's emphasis is on photography, offering real-time framing from a first-person point of view.[8]

Shenzhenware described the glasses as neither AR glasses nor audio glasses but a camera-centered product with some lightweight AR functions, and wrote that they were larger than the original Google Glass. Its writer argued that the glasses were not suited to everyday wear, could not avoid privacy concerns because of their size and camera, and lacked social features, and suggested the product might be a transitional engineering device ahead of a successor. The same article noted that the Xiaomi Smart Glasses Explorer Edition, shown in September 2021, had not received any mass-production news a year later.[9]
